Tiña (pronounced ‘teen-ya’) are the enigmatic new band from South London formed around the burgeoning Brixton Windmill scene.

Made up of members of an assortment of acts including Bat-Bike, Uncle Tesco and Pet Grotesque – the band features: Joshua Loftin (vox/guitar), George Rhys Davies (drums), Uncle Tesco (bass), Oliver R Lester (guitar) & Calum Armstrong (keys).

In the strong tradition of breaking their own rules and following in the foosteps of the 9-minute epic opus ‘Sunglasses’ from Black Country, New Road – this will be Speedy’s second ever digital-only single.

The band previously worked with the label, releasing their jangle-drenched pop song ‘I Feel Fine’ as part of the label’s 7” single series back in May 2019 – to much acclaim – garnering plays all over 6 Music + Radio X and being included on Rough Trade’s seminal Counter Culture Compilation at the end of the year.

Now they’re back with the just-as-infectious ‘Dip’ in which Loftin applies his sweet falsetto on a song whose theme in his own words is a mantra to ‘keep on going.’

With a chorus that implores us that it’s ‘time to dance’ and alternatively ‘it’s time to die’ – this lyrical juxtaposition sits on a shimmering and summery musical bed, referencing lo-fi heroes Pavement as well as indie contemporaries like Real Estate and Parquet Courts.

On working again with Speedy label boss, producer Dan Carey, Loftin says, ‘Even in my state of anxiety and paranoia working with Dan is so fun and beautiful. Hi daughter’s dog is called Feta, and she makes you feel good to hold. I believe Dan has meditated all his life and he just pops into the studio to record before returning to his world peace.’

The title track “Soul On Fire” further showcases The Last Internationale wide range of musical skills. The single is a lot more than an interesting take on a ballad: it’s a rock song with heavy blues influences, that changes continuously and yet it never loses itself thanks to the deep, warm and fiery voice of Delila Paz.

The band comments: “We wrote the Soul On Fire album after our escape from the major label system. It was a low point for us, where almost everyone we worked with (or called us “family”) had abandoned us. We had to make that dreaded decision of whether to quit or continue the long battle that seemed more impossible than ever. Although our physical and mental health was quickly deteriorating, we reminded ourselves that there are people in the world who are much worse off than us and that we are actually in a very fortunate position where we can continue to use our voices to uplift people and expose injustice.

What appeared to be a tragedy instantly turned into a blessing and an opportunity to trust ourselves and once again embrace the DIY spirit that this band is about. The video for “Soul On Fire” was shot by us and a few friends and was edited and directed by us. The NYC running scenes are essentially documentary footage, as Delila was still very ill at the time. Running in NYC woke up our soul and fed our fighting spirit.”

The studio record follows their critically acclaimed debut album “We Will Reign” released in 2014, and it bears five years of human struggles within a thankless industry. Self-produced in the Estudios de Bandeira in Portugal, “Soul On Fire” features twelve powerfully intense rock driven -tracks and sees Joey Castillo (Queens of The Stone Age) on drums. “Soul On Fire” showcases the band’s song-writing evolution towards a more complex, full-bodied sound; it truly reflects the band’s musical and personal growth. The new record is a window on the band’s newly found awareness: on one hand the topics remain consistent, creating a harmonious transition between “We Will Reign” and “Soul On Fire”, on the other hand the soundscape has dramatically changed. Where previously the sound was round and clean, now it is gritty, rough around the edges and heavy. Musically, the album displays the development of their raw craftsmanship into an intense, intricate and truthful sonic dimension. With “Soul On Fire” the controversy, the fight and struggle are brought to life through the music as well as the lyrics.

Album executive producer Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Prophets Of Rage)  says: “The Last Internationale are one of my favourites in the next wave of rebel rockers. They’re raw and real and mix East Village rock sensibilities with Battleship Potemkin firepower.”

Push It Til It Hurts – Hedara

Returning at the start of a new decade, Hedara continues her rich vein of electronica-tinged pop with her second EP ‘Hurts’. Releasing off the back of an incredible debut year for the project, it’s a release that explores the artists personal experiences through the vehicle of emotive, nuanced alt-pop songwriting.

Pursuing her passion for music from a young age, Hedara (real name Scarlet Billham) graduated from London’s famous BRIT School alongside Freya Ridings and others. She was enjoying a lively start to her music career, performing a number of key shows and festivals, before a near death experience, falling into a diabetic coma caused her to re-assess and re-evaluate her outlook.

Finding her way back into music, she began working with Carey Willetts (Dua Lipa, Freya Ridings, Dermot Kennedy). Together they co-wrote Hedara’s first EP Slow. Scarlet soon sent her music to industry friend Tom Speight, who loved her sound and invited Hedara to join him on his UK tour.

Hedara soon launched her debut EP to critical acclaim from the likes of Clash Magazine, Earmilk, Adidas X Girls Are Awesome and a number of key publications on The Hype Machine. Spotify also supported the release on their Fresh Finds playlist, and support on the airwaves came from Jo Wiley on BBC Radio 2 and Tom Robinson across BBC Introducing and 6Music.

A prolific songwriter and creative, Hedara was soon back with Skin Deep just a couple of months later. Supported across Radio 2 with Dermot O’Leary getting behind the track from an early stage, it served as a statement of intent for the releases to come. The EP ebbs and flows between the heartfelt tones of “Liar” and the potent, upbeat pop flavours of ‘Skin Deep’ and ‘Hurts’. It’s a release full of anguish, but the overriding feeling of lessons learnt from a difficult time in the artists past.

“Hurts is a self admission about having allowed someone to control a relationship, and the realisation of knowing that it is totally wrong, so you take the hold. It’s about realising you’re done with the excuses. Something worth having shouldn’t hurt and it’s time to walk away”

Catholic Action begin their 2020 in technicolour as they share the trippy and fuzzed-out new video for their latest single, People Don’t Protest Enough.

As anticipation mounts ahead of the release of new album Celebrated by Strangers (March 27, Modern Sky) People Don’t Protest Enough continues to catch the ear of the disillusioned many, armed to the teeth with stabbing, politically pointed lyrical daggers. The song is a call to organise and be noisy about what you believe in, as lead singer and guitarist Chris McCrory outlines; “This is Casiotone for the politically marginalised. This is Krautrock for a progressive, positive future.”

Video director Jamie Logie adds; “During pre-production we really wanted to let the song flourish visually. Taking a step back from emphasising the true meaning of the lyrics and giving the composition space to breathe new life, we knew anything could happen on green screen. We created a dreamy post-punk sequence, dipping into futurism amidst staring at our feet.”

On forthcoming album Celebrated by Strangers, Catholic Action find themselves searching for meaning, defining identity, attacking power, pointing fingers and demanding accountability. McCrory adds; “I’m in it to make records that are interesting and matter. We’ve made a record that embraces the negatives – both from a musical and social/political standpoint – sees the humour in them and ultimately turns them into something positive; be that a better outlook, or progressive political action.”

Indebted at times to the progressive ‘70s influences of Eno, Fripp and Talking Heads, Celebrated by Strangers is ultimately the sonic statement of a band inspired by the mire of the now, with a sense of humour, hope, change and proactivity.

Before the album arrives however, the band focus themselves on their first live activity of the decade as they plot a route through the US, in the run up to appearances at SXSW, before returning to the UK for the year’s first city weekender festivals. See the band live on the following dates.

Never Give Up Son – Son Little

Son Little, the moniker of Los Angeles-based musician Aaron Earl Livingston, will release his new album, aloha, on January 31st via ANTI-. On January 14th, he premiered the video for new single, “neve give up,” via Billboard. Following previously released singles “hey rose,” “suffer,” and “mahalia,” “neve give up” is a gorgeous track about perseverance.

“Hallelujah,” Little sings, “though I’m battered and blue / feel like I’m born to lose…Never will I give up.” It is a potent reminder that letting go doesn’t mean giving in; it can be an act of defiance, of growth, of empowerment. The accompanying animated video was created by Piotr Kabat, which Billboard described as, “an animated clip of a man walking through a desert before arriving at a gilded metropolis destination — symbolizing his grandfather’s story”.

Recorded at Paris’s iconic Studios Ferber with producer Renaud Letang (Feist, Manu Chao), aloha is Little’s first album to be recorded with an outside producer. The result is his boldest, most self-assured statement yet. In order to create aloha, Little began writing and assembling album demos in Petaluma, California. However, after his hard drive fried and he lost nearly a dozen detailed demos, he was forced to begin with a blank slate, leading him to write aloha in only eight days at a tiny house and its adjacent barn. The entire project was an exercise in letting go, in ceding control, in surrendering to fate.

End March, Son Little will kick off a European tour in support of aloha. A full list of tour dates is below, and all dates are on-sale now.

If rock is dead, someone forgot to tell Tuk Smith. He flies the flag for the genre in the same way as today’s rock idols have. So it is only fitting he open for some of them – Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard and Joan Jett will ‘introduce’ Tuk Smith &The Restless Hearts via their upcoming stadium tour.

After cutting his teeth — among many other things — for nine years as the frontman for the Atlanta rock band Biters, Tuk’s solo debut sees him further expanding the reaches of his musical vision into an album that unifies multiple musical styles. Tuk’s debut album, Lookin’ for Love, Ready for War,showcases the versatility of his songwriting. From instantly infectious anthems to intricately arranged rockers and Americana-tinged ballads the album favors dedication over debauchery. In many ways it’s a musical homecoming for Smith that shows that though he’s covered with battle scars from perfecting his craft, he’s come out on the other side with an amazing collection of songs.

Produced by the legendary Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Eric Clapton, My Chemical Romance) explains “People that really like honest-to-god Rock and Roll – this is the kind of stuff they’ll love. Tuk produced and wrote the video, of which he explains “I think when people first hear the song they might not get its meaning right away. I wanted to create a narrative in the video that helped complement the lyrics. Having full creative vision as an artist is as rewarding as it is daunting. If something doesn’t pan out right there is no one to blame but yourself, but it’s the best feeling when your vision becomes reality. I had so many close friends and family act, be extras, and work on videos with me. I’m so lucky to have such a pool of talent and characters to pull from.”
