In The Beginning – Cro-Mags

Why it’s called In The Beginning, as explained by Harley Flanagan.

“In many ways it is a new beginning and also a tribute to where it all began.

This is the first Cro-Mags album in 20 years after I had to go through major hell to secure what everyone knows was always my (bands) name. It cost a lot financially and emotionally, probably second only to the Misfits (to put it in hardcore punk terms financially), after which we secured not just one, but two record deals – one with Arising Empire In Europe and 2 with Victory Records/ Mission Two Entertainment for the rest of the world. Toward the end of 2019, Victory Records, founded by Tony Brummel, was sold and Cro-Mags moved from Victory to Mission Two Entertainment. Tony has often credited starting Victory Records after seeing the Cro-Mags play with Venom at Chicago’s legendary Metro Club and now with his new label Mission Two, this truly is a new beginning; for him and for Cro-Mags.

The front cover is a picture of the building I used to live in called ‘C Squat,’ which is where I wrote most of the music that wound up on the Age Of Quarrel demos; it was taken when I used to live there in the early 80’s by Brooke Smith. The back cover is a recent picture of me, well the back of my head (taken by Laura Lee Flanagan), looking down at the site where that building once stood; so essentially, it’s me looking at my past. The inside picture is of the front of the building in the early 80s (taken by Steve Butcher). It’s pretty intense. You can’t imagine what that place was like.

This album has all my influences in it; everything from Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Black Sabbath, Motorhead to Pink Floyd, Hardcore, Metal, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Classical – you name it. It’s all the ingredients that went into writing the old Cro-Mags songs and then some. It even has cellos and percussion and samples on it. I’m not afraid to break the so-called rules of hardcore, I never was; that’s why our music stood out and always has. This is a culmination of everything I am as a person; it’s my personal evolution; my musical evolution and all the things that have influenced me musically thus far. It is 100% Cro-Mags.”

Appalling Human – Wesley Gonzalez

Ahead of the release of new album “Appalling Human” this Friday via Moshi Moshi, Wesley Gonzalez is sharing a cover of Sports Men by the beloved and influential Japanese musician and producer Haruomi Hosono.

Wesley explains what this particular track means to him:

“Haruomi Hosono has become my most enduring influence, since discovering his music towards the end of my time in my previous band Let’s Wrestle, it informed so much of what kind of artist I wanted to be on my own. Not just in terms of songwriting and production but even in the aesthetics of the artwork and videos he did either on his own or with Yellow Magic Orchestra. I was recommended the album Philharmony and that’s what got me gripped, to find someone who makes abstract experimental gamalean-esque tracks and covers Italian opera but can also write a song as fantastically pop as ‘Sports Men’ enthralling and his entire discography has been an absolute gift. I usually find I have year long love affairs with certain artists and move on to someone else but I’ve continued an absolute obsession with his work. So I felt a need to express my adoration with this cover, not something I tend to make a big habit of but I had such fun rebuilding the synth parts and adding a new rhythmic element to the chorus It was an absolute pleasure. It’s one of those tracks that should get as much respect as something like ‘Once In A Lifetime’ by Talking Heads or ‘ Ashes To Ashes’ in my opinion at least.”

In the run-up to the release of new album “Appalling Human” this Friday, Wesley will also perform live at a virtual in-store for Banquet Records, streaming through their Facebook channel on June 10th HERE

Along with therapy, taking better care of himself and a switch from guitars to learning and writing on piano, it was the choice of people to work with that helped him into this new creative phase.The new line up around Wesley was completed by the bassist Joe Chilton, singer Rose Dougal, drummer Bobby Voltaire and Callum Duffy on synths. They’d sit back and accommodate his demanding notion of how things should sound.

As the new way of working unblocked Gonzalez’ creativity on the first record, so too did new listening lead to stepping up his ambition for the scope and sound of its follow-up. He was going in for work each day at a Soho record shop, wanting to throw himself into traffic, then patching himself up with music.

“I was listening to loads of house music, hip hop, soul and funk. The more dance music you listen to, the more you go like ‘Oh, it’s OK not to be dreary the entire time.'”

Despite all the electronic prostheses that grace his solo project, at the heart of his music there is a depth to the song writing and a singular character to it. There’s an eccentricity somewhat akin to Harry Nilsson, or Andy Partridge of XTC, and a kind of melancholy (lost)innocence. His sensitive feel for characters and situations is simply unparalleled in his peer group. It’s a depth that becomes more and more apparent with each release.

Curb Records recording artist Dylan Scott hits the RIAA Double Platinum certification with his US #1 single, “My Girl.”

The track, which was the #6 most played country song of 2017, as well as the #40 song of the decade according to Mediabase, hit #1 on the Mediabase and Billboard charts in July 2017.

Also with a new certification is Scott’s self-titled album, Dylan Scott (Deluxe Edition). The album is now RIAA certified Gold, while accruing over 730 million on – demand streams since its release in August 2016.

Currently at country radio, Scott’s crowd-pleasing single, “Nobody,” taken from his new Nothing To Do Town EP, boasts over 37 million on-demand streams, and debuted on NBC’s TODAY with Hoda and Jenna earlier this year.

Slapping You Up – MERCUTIO

Taking Us Up The Dirt Road – Granger Smith

Granger Smith has released a powerful collaboration of his current single “That’s Why I Love Dirt Roads” featuring Christian rapper Lathan Warlick.

Smith’s wife, Amber, introduced him to Lathan Warlick’s Instagram a couple months ago and instantly was drawn to his rebranding of different songs that portray his own testimonies of life battles and subsequent renewal.

In a May 27 Instagram post (click here to see) Smith shared Warlick’s clip with a note, ”A few months ago, Amber found @lathanwarlick and showed me his insta page. He was taking popular tunes, adding his own lyrics and completely rebranding the songs with his own stories of life, struggle, rebirth and testimony. I loved it instantly.”

He continued, “I reached out via DM and we hit it off right away. (And one day we’ll take our boys fishin) This dude, through his own path, has pulled the layers back on life and sees things in a new way…with truth, integrity and God first. I only hope that one day I can see as clearly as he does.”

“That’s Why I Love Dirt Roads” elevates the dirt road to a place of sanctuary and honor and becomes more than an ode to growing up off the grid. Although still nostalgic, the lyrics are much deeper than just good times on backroads. And that feeling is elevated by Warlick’s powerful lyrical additions.

Warlick raps over the track:

“You never know what to expect or what’s coming next when riding them dirt roads, the gravel and dust might throw you off if I’m ready or not only God knows. It’s hard trynna hold it together when I lost a couple of people along the ride, wish I could roll back the hands on a clock just to tell ’em, “I love you” just one more time.”

The collaboration is released fresh on the heels of the announce of Smith’s new twice-weekly “Live at the Yee Yee Farm: Shop Set.” Last Monday, Smith premiered his “Live at the Yee Yee Farm: Shop Set” on YouTube where he and his band come together at the Yee Yee Shop at his farm and host around a 30-minute set in a relaxing atmosphere at 6:30pm CT (12:30am BST) on Mondays and Thursdays. Thinning Out DNA – Night Demon

It is no secret that one of the band’s greatest influences is Thin Lizzy. Indeed, Thin Lizzy’s pioneering hard rock aesthetic is foundational to Night Demon, engrained in the band’s collective musical DNA.

With this single, they celebrate the priceless legacy of Thin Lizzy, paying tribute to the iconic Irish minstrels with a pair of songs, one original and one cover. “Are You Out There” is a rollicking, feel-good tune whose hooks, melodies, vibe, and spirit were all crafted in the vein of the Dublin masters, yet still filtered through Night Demon’s signature sound.

Even the subject matter of the song is related to Thin Lizzy, albeit with an autobiographical twist. Lyricist Jarvis Leatherby spins a cautionary tale about the final days of the legendary Phil Lynott, before his life was cut tragically short by drug and alcohol addiction. To be sure, “Are You Out There” may surprise longtime fans expecting a pummelling metal attack in the time-honored Night Demon tradition. But this song showcases a different side of the band, one that has always been present but perhaps obscured by the darkness and fury.

Night Demon recorded “Are You Out There” at Electrical Audio in Chicago, under the watchful eye of famed rock producer Steve Albini. In keeping with the Thin Lizzy tribute theme, the B-side of Are You Out There is a suitably Demonized cover of the Lizzy classic “The Sun Goes Down.” Initially, Night Demon’s version adheres closely to the somber, moody feel of the original, only to explode into an urgent uptempo romp that indelibly etches Night Demon’s mark on the song.

The Night Demon legend continued to grow with the release of their second full-length album, Darkness Remains, in April 2017. US prog metal outfit OCEANS OF SLUMBER announce the release of their new and self-titled album “Oceans Of Slumber”, due to be released on September 4^th, 2020, via Century Media Records worldwide.

With “A Return To The Earth Below” the band releases the first single taken off of the new record. Vocalist Cammie Gilbert is checking in with the following comment about the new song:
