All At Sea – JAMES HUMPHRYS

Bristol based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist JAMES HUMPHRYS will release his second EP, ‘Memory Palace’ on 10th July.

Consisting of four tracks written and created off the coast of Alaska while working on a cruise ship, the EP includes recent singles, ‘Colour and ‘All The Same’, and pays testament to James’s ability to create multi-layered, genre-bending indie anthems brimming with optimism and energy.

Speaking about his time at sea, James explains, “It was a surreal experience. The ocean and the scenery which we experienced every day for the best part of a year was expansive and freeing but the monotony and regimental tendencies of ship life would conflict with this; you could very easily feel confined and trapped at times.”

The result of said experiences is a richly textured, infectious and uplifting offering loaded with everything from funk fuelled rhythms to jazz inspired horn sections and trumpet solos; lyrically exploring James’s positive and optimistic outlook on life and the struggles and anxieties of modern life.

In ‘All The Same’ Humphrys provides a reminder that it’s okay to feel good about things; a call to us all to believe in something when it feels right and not to always look for reasons why it might be wrong; while on ‘Better Now’ he seeks comfort whilst feeling out of his own depth.

He explains, “It’s a song about the importance of friendship and the fact that although you may often feel that things are out of control, even people who seem like they’ve got it together have the same sort of days when they’re just trying to keep their heads above water. Remembering that you’re not alone in your feelings can help make even the worst day better.”

Elsewhere ‘Colour’ delves into the thoughts which surround the uncomfortable feeling you get when you catch a friend displaying a false persona in group situations, and ‘Lost In You’, written with his girlfriend Bethany details the beginning of a relationship and the uplifting feeling of being completely lost in a partner.

Taking influences from bands like Foals, Parcels, Bombay Bicycle Club and Real Estate, James’s music is a unique concoction of upbeat funk-filled dream pop with often surprisingly melancholic lyrics.

James has played venues ranging from Bristol’s Thekla to the Royal Albert Hall, and supported bands including San Cisco, Shortstraw and Cassia. In addition to multiple sets with London’s Sofar Sounds, James has also joined the line-up at 2000 Trees Festival, Bristol Harbour Side Festival and Dot to Dot Festival. In 2018 James fulfilled an ambition by performing at Glastonbury Festival.

2019 saw James expanding his horizons, securing two short-term performing contracts in the Pacific. He used the time away to concentrate on his writing and his next single ‘Lay It All Down’ featured on Spotify’s Transistor playlist.

Michael Landau will be releasing his brand new album ‘Liquid Quartet Live’ on 21st August via The Players Club, a division of the Mascot Label Group.

Talking about the song he says; “Can’t Walk Away From It Now” is a brand new song that David and I recently wrote. This is the song’s first appearance on a record. It’s got a swampy feel and an honest sentiment in the lyrics that David wrote, current with the times: Give if you wanna receive,Take less than you leave, We only leave love anyhow”

The album was recorded live at the world-famous Baked Potato Jazz Club in Los Angeles in November last year with his Liquid Quartet line-up of drummer Abe Laboriel Jr (Paul McCartney), bassist Jimmy Johnson (Alan Holdsworth) and on guitar and vocals, David Frazee (Burning Water).

Since being that teenager he has gone on to a phenomenal solo career as well as collaborating with an incredible number of artists such as; Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, BB King, James Taylor, Ray Charles, Donna Summer, Tim McGraw, Stevie Nicks, Cher, Graham Nash, Roberta Flack, Ringo Starr, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Joe Cocker, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, and Rod Stewart to modern iconic pop albums such as Michael Jackson (‘Bad’/‘Invincible’), Alanis Morissette (‘Jagged Little Pill’), Anastacia (‘Anastacia’/’It’s A Man’s World’) and Mariah Carey (‘Emotions’/’Music Box’). The musician and composer has also worked on several movie soundtracks such as ‘Collateral’ (2004), ‘Blood Diamond’ (2006), ‘Salt’ (2010), ‘The Green Hornet’ (2011), ‘Larry Crowne (2011), ‘Rock of Ages’ (2012), ‘The Bourne Legacy’ (2012) and more. He also picked up a Grammy Award (2018) and Grammy nomination (2016) as part of the Steve Gadd Band.

But it’s live where you see Landau express himself with such ferocity; “The rawness and the unknown factor of a live recording is fun, the trust and the sometimes reckless abandonment of playing live. I play differently when I play live, more aggressive at times. It’s a cleansing moment to just let it rip and not worry about it.”

The set list features outings of some brand new songs (‘Well Let’s Just See,’ ‘Can’t Walk Away From It Now’) as well as some inspired renditions from his back catalogue; from his previous studio album ‘Rock Bottom’ (‘Bad Friend,’ ‘One Tear Away’), Burning Water’s (‘Can’t Buy My Way Home,’ ‘Killing Time’) and Renegade Creation, the band he formed with Robben Ford (‘Greedy Life,’ ‘Renegade Destruction’) as well as two instrumentals to finish the night.

A first-generation Mexican-American based in Oxnard, CA (home also to Stones Throw affiliates Madlib and Anderson .Paak), Los Retros, AKA Mauri Tapia, began playing music as a child, borrowing his older brother’s guitar when he was just eight years old. When he was around 16, he started putting tracks online that he’d recorded with an old second-hand mixer, on which he played all the instruments himself. Thanks purely to word of mouth, he built a loyal fan base online, racking up hundreds of thousands of streams, and began performing to sold-out audiences of young people who related to his heartfelt songs.

For inspiration, Mauri looks to the record collections of his parents’ generation: American AOR from the ’70s and ’80s, soft-rock crooners, and leftfield pop from Central and South America. (His name is an homage to Chilean pop group Los Ángeles Negros.) His debut EP Retrospect, released last year, drew praise from the likes of Dazed, The FADER, The LA Times and Remezcla, the latter of which featured Mauri in their Nuevo Noise latinx artist profile series describing him as “one of the most exciting artists making indie today.”

Barrelling through the doom and gloom of 2020 at a blistering 130bpm, London based New Wave outfit PHANTOM ISLE unveil their immensely danceable new single, ‘MAR V’ – out Wednesday 8th July.

Consisting of hypnotic synth lines, goosebump-inducing rhythm and a hint of dark and mysterious atmosphere, ‘MAR V’ sees Phantom Isle stray from their art-pop roots with great success; highlighting their effortless capability to blend genres and moods for maximum effect – think LCD Soundsystem / Hot Chip style indie-house.

Keyboard player, Joshua Pullen who took the lead with writing the music says: “The song started as a remix of our previous single ‘I Am Urs’ but became a very different beast when I was messing about with a new drum machine I bought. I was listening to a lot of Soulwax and Simian Mobile Disco at the time and loved how they would produce songs with a pounding single-note loop throughout.”

Despite its upbeat and energetic feel, there’s a dark side to ‘MAR V’. Lyricist and drummer, Sam Thorne explains: “The lyrics were actually written about feeling anxious and alone” comparing that feeling to an old friend that follows you through life, saying “you almost miss it when you leave it behind”. Singer and guitarist, Peter Marchant adds, “the song pretty much became the soundtrack of MaNo-Musikfestival in Marburg, Germany, where we headlined in March this year”. 2,000 fans jumped and danced frantically to MAR V’s hypnotic pulse at the festival’s closing show, seen in the single’s official video along with a montage of mischievous and surreal footage from the band’s journey so far. The band arrived in Marburg on March 5th (hence the romanised title, ‘MAR V’), they saw and conquered.

When two-time gold-album selling alternative rock band Cold’s 2020 tour was postponed due to the pandemic, bassist Lindsay Manfredi found herself quarantined on a farm in Fallbrook, California.

The result is her debut book, Unfuckwithable: A Guide to Inspired Badassery, published by Rose Gold Publishing, LLC.

“Working on the road on something other than music and fan connection is extremely difficult, since I’m not that focused. And while not touring sucks for the time being, this quarantine gave me the chance to actually focus on the completion of the book, which has been four years in the making.”

The origins of Unfuckwithable started over 20 years ago, when Manfredi got a spider tattoo, the logo of her favorite band while working in the music industry on her own projects. Unbeknownst to her, she was manifesting a future in the band. In 2014, lead singer Scooter Ward, saw her Cold tattoo and reached out.

“We were looking for a new bassist, and someone had sent me a few photos along with links of Lindsay playing bass. Her having the cold spider tattooed on her forearm was a welcomed surprise. Then, I watched her TEDx talk on the non-profit she had co-founded, Girls Rock Indianapolis, and that sealed the deal. Not only is she a great musician, she adds a perfect energy to the band.”

Manfredi relocated to the west coast to begin recording Cold’s new album, The Things We Can’t Stop. After a few months of working on the album, she went back to the midwest to spend some time with her daughter, and during that time, she gained a renewed devotion to meditation and the Law of Attraction. Her studies of the works of Don Miguel Ruiz, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle, and Gabrielle Bernstein inspired her to become unfuckwithable. She then decided to write her own story. She invites readers to share her journey and also get to a place where they ask the hard questions to truly get to know themselves and become unfuckwithable as well.

In this 224-page memoir and personal development book, Manfredi shares her personal experiences with bullying and abuse, the celebrations of living a creative life, and wisdom learned along the way.

Imperial Triumphant officially began with their 2012 debut release “Abominamentvm”. The line up consisted of Zachary Ilya Ezrin on guitar/vocals and the rhythm section of their NYC contemporaries: Pyrrhon. Soon they met with drummer Kenny Grohowski and began to feature him on their next two releases “Goliath” (EP) and “Abyssal Gods” (LP). In 2015, they introduced bassist Steve Blanco into their lineup. In 2016, they released another EP “Inceste” which they toured heavily that year with temporary second guitarist Max Gorelick. 2018 brought about their magnum statement: “Vile Luxury”. It is a full length record written collectively by the trio (Ezrin, Grohowski, Blanco) in homage to their hometown New York City that brought jazz elements to the avant-garde black metal style in a way never achieved before. They toured Europe and North America extensively from 2018-19 in support of that album.
