FULL FRONTAL ASSAULT – Fucked And Bound

Blistering, raw and angry are the three words that best describe Seattle’s Fucked And Bound. Lisa Mungo (Vocals) brings a fresh and emotional perspective to the feminist voice. “Suffrage” is the voice of a new generation demanding we all make a change.

“Suffrage”, released in 2018 by Atomic Action! Records, and now being reissued by Quiet Panic with new album artwork by McClelland and an additional Sonic Youth cover, “Kool Thing”.

Despite the name, Seattle’s Fucked and Bound feels fundamentally untethered. They’ve
achieved an air of unhinged freedom mainly by thrashing their way through unassuming,
beloved punk venues, writhing across unwashed floors and DIY spaces, hosting their own
sort of hardcore communal exorcisms – participation mandatory.

Fucked And Bound 'Suffrage'

In simpler, pre-pandemic times, vocalist Lisa Mungo (He Whose Ox Is Gored) is a full
frontal, feral assault to those who bear witness to the band. The majority of her time is
spent throwing herself into the fray, forcing interaction, wildly occupying a headspace that
exposes her natural effervescence and intimacy just as much as the reckless abandon,
anger and nihilism that can be found in their lyrics. In a way that not many others can,
Mungo fearlessly elicits nearly fanatical enthusiasm, even from those who have never
previously heard the band. She can be seen stepping on stage with a dozen red roses to
hand out, and five minutes later, tearing off her clothes and screaming viciously into the
faces of unsuspecting attendees in the pit. This juxtaposition of tenderness and
aggression, romance and filth, is a perfect metaphor for the band’s music as a whole

All the while, drummer Matt Chandler, bassist Rah Davis (Cattle Decapitation), and
guitarist Brian McClelland (He Whose Ox Is Gored) allow Mungo the space to fully
transform, howling and rabid, as they tear through their own grimy D-beats and breakneck
grindcore riffs in a nuanced way that strays impossibly far from the simplistic, macho meatheadedness that hardcore punk music has often been known for in the past. In fact, their
ethos appears firmly rooted in feminism and radical righteousness – unapologetically so.
This is particularly evident in the name of the band’s first LP, “Suffrage”, now being
reissued by Quiet Panic.

This is a band whose existence is essential for these times, encapsulating the frenetic
energy, confrontational anger and increasing anxiety that so many are feeling. Fucked and
Bound is an outlet for those who seek solace in the filth and the fire, whose cynicism has
grown out of disappointed idealism, who carry a bloody, sharpened ax to grind with the
powers that be.

One Off The Bucket List – Morgan Wallen

Joining an elite group of Country predecessors, Big Loud/Republic Records’ Morgan Wallen brought twang, electricity, and two debut performances to this weekend’s edition of NBC’s Saturday Night Live (5/12; broadcast on Sky Comedy 6/12) with host Jason Bateman.

Starting the night with “the country song that everyone’s talking about right now” (Los Angeles Times), Wallen’s “7 Summers” (watch here) gently introduced the Country juggernaut, showing off the US Top 30 single’s “dreamy, ‘80s inspired” (Stereogum) mood. Cranking up the volume, his second performance brought “Still Goin Down” (watch here) to life for the first time, “a hometown, paint-by-numbers country pride anthem” (Entertainment Weekly) that also previews his upcoming sophomore effort, Dangerous: The Double Album.

She’s A Peach – Nora Lei

A self-described “old-soul, hopeless romantic, and heroine of her own life adventure,” Nora Lei is welcoming listeners into her noir-pop world, one song at as time. Lei is rounding out a year of exciting releases with her newest dreamy pop track, “Together.” Audiofemme exclusively premiered the single, calling it “an ode to unbreakable love.”

On the new single, Lei taps into a more full-bodied, electro-inspired sound while staying true to her dark-pop roots with lyrics that explore the ups and downs of a relationship. “The song is all about fighting for your relationship,” she says. “You remember the good times, hard times, and the times you start to feel crazy…but really you’re just scared. You both know you’re supposed to be together so you keep trying and, in the end, you’re glad you did.” Originally written in her home-studio over a Polar Beats sample she found online, Lei tapped heavy-hitting producers Joe Laporta (Solange, Shawn Mendes, Lolo Zouai) and Harper James (Eighty Ninety, Aaron Taos) to round out the track with their refined pop production.

Nora Lei is no newcomer to creative pursuits. Despite only being 28 years old, the New York-based singer/songwriter has already had a fruitful career as a designer with her swimwear line, Perfect Peach. From a young age she was encouraged to pursue creativity in all of its forms, playing flute, cheerleading, dancing, singing, and sketching. With an upbringing that was marked by extensive relocation — she’s lived in Pennsylvania, London, the English countryside, Northern California, Los Angeles, and, now, New York — creative pursuits were often her only constant.

Sexy And Inspired – D!XON

D!XON is the moniker of Toronto pop R&B artist Sheldon Dixon. With parents of Trinidadian and Guyanese descent, D!XON has advanced as an artist through singing, songwriting, producing, dancing and acting.

From the age of six, his home would echo with the sounds of Michael and Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton and Mariah Carey – musicians who have impacted his artistry today.

It wasn’t always an easy road for D!XON. In high school he would receive daily death threats and criticisms for his gender expression and sexual orientation. His once musical home was silenced by the practice of a strict religion that did not support his love for music and men. He was stripped of his identity and freedom of self-expression down to the places he was able to go and the clothes he was allowed to wear leaving him passionless and down a suicidal road. D!XON spent the latter years of his adolescence not feeling accepted or welcomed in hereronormative urban spaces.

Deciding to press play on his life and create his own soundtrack, D!XON found the courage to leave home, find comfort in religion and came to terms with the fact that his peers may have used him as an outlet for the projection of their own insecurities. D!XON shares, “When I left home I was able to connect with the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and ballroom scene where I started to build relationships with people I related to and I met my long time collaborator Hollywood Jade.” It wasn’t until D!XON met his now long-time music producer, Verse-Atile, that he found true power infusing music and his religious beliefs. D!XON advocates for the causes of anti-bullying and anti-oppression by amplifying the values of self-acceptance as well as the acceptance of others.

D!XON’s latest single “Arms Around Me” is an urban-pop tune to get you feeling sexy and inspired. The mantra of the empowering song is the unapologetic confession and expression of love for those around you, no matter who you love, and before it’s too late. The R&B pop-dance beat is dripping in sauce, stunning, layered vocals, riffs and harmonies.

D!XON is also the creator of the City of Toronto’s Drag Masterclass which featured Priyanka, the winner of Drag Race Canada. He has worked closely with Toronto’s very own Drag Legend Sofonda Cox who mentored the at-risk LGBTQ+ youth in the program. This masterclass limited barriers for LGBTQ+ youth in the community who are looking for professional artistic development to increase their chances of employment as a Drag Queen or Drag King at the local Drag Bars. The Masterclass was so successful that it has been renewed annually with the City of Toronto.

Masterful Work – Front Line Assembly

The Canadian industrial outfit Front Line Assembly have been fearlessly pushing the boundaries of that musical description for more than three decades, exploring all manner of styles and influences since forming as a purely electronic based concern in the mid-80s.

Helmed by founder Bill Leeb with long-time cohort Rhys Fulber, the legendary Vancouver based act have just announced the release of a brand new album entitled ‘Mechanical Soul’ in January 2021. A masterful work from one of the greats of the genre, it can be seen as the zenith of the duo’s artistic endeavours together. The album also includes guest appearances from Jean-Luc De Meyer of Front 242 (on ‘Barbarians’) and Dino Cazares of Fear Factory (on ‘Stifle’).
