A Must See – Black Country, New Road
In February, the London seven-piece Black Country, New Road released a much-anticipated debut “For the first time” on Ninja Tune which saw them embed themselves as a vital prospect in forward-thinking music.
One, perhaps best summed up by The Times who wrote in their 5/5 write-up that they were “the most exciting band of 2021” and The Observer who called their record “one of the best albums of the year”. “For the first time” was welcomed by extensive critical support globally, and also made a significant dent on the UK Albums Chart, landing at #4 in its first week, a remarkable achievement for a largely experimental debut record.
Now, the band share a new version of “Track X” entitled “Track X (The Guest)”, the genesis from which the album highlight would later develop and a track that Isaac Wood first performed solo under the name “The Guest”, pre-BC,NR.
Stripped right back to front-man Isaac’s stark lyrics and an acoustic guitar, it’s a tender take on personal experience and a reminder of the creative dynamics within the group, how sparse beginnings can grow into something ever-expansive and different entirely.
"For the first time"
“This version is where the lyrics for "Track X" originally came from. It’s an old story, with some simple guitar playing and has the extra lyrics in the chorus. It's "The Guest" version, written about 2 years ago in this format and we thought it would make for a good accomplice to the album.”

“For the first time” also reached #1 on Any Decent Music, #2 at Album Of The Year and sat at #1 on Rate Your Music for several weeks, remaining the record to generate the most fan reviews and site discussion there this year. Black Country, New Road were also declared Artist Of The Week and Album Of The Week at the likes of The Observer, The Line Of Best Fit and Stereogum, and saw features, including covers and reviews, from the likes of Mojo, NPR, CRACK, Uncut, The Quietus, Pitchfork, The FADER, Loud & Quiet, The Face, Paste, The Needle Drop, DIY, NME, CLASH, So Young, Dork and more.
Black Country, New Road’s live performances have already gained legendary status from fans and has seen them labelled “one of the UK’s best live bands” by The Guardian. After the success of their recent livestream direct from the Southbank Centre – where the band were joined by a choir for the debut of new material, showing a second full-length record is already within their sights, and for which the band received a further 5/5 live review from The Times – and a recent stand-out performance at the BBC 6 Music Festival, the band are now excited to be returning to the live fold from June, starting with a sold out UK tour and three London headliners at The Islington Assembly Hall, the third added after the first two sold out in three minutes.
As well as their own sold out dates in the near future, the band have a busy year and further ascent in front of them, with festival dates including End Of The Road, Wide Awake and Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here, as well as extensive shows and festivals across Europe and another UK headline tour of their own to follow in November and December.

Sonic Destruction – EARTHLESS
San Diego-based heavy psych rock trio EARTHLESS have released a new record, “Live In The Mojave Desert,” via Nuclear Blast (digital) and Giant Rock Records (physical).
Inspired by Pink Floyd’s “Live at Pompeil,” the album was recorded live and filmed throughout day and night in the natural amphitheater of California’s Mojave Desert.
“Having the opportunity to set up out in the desert and play how we do was one of the best experiences ever actually,” says EARTHLESS drummer Mario Rubalcaba. “Adding to it the Mad Alchemy liquid lights and the surroundings made for a very satisfying day/night of jamming. Thankful for Giant Rock Records preserving the night by filming and recording this. I hope people can enjoy the release as much as we did doing it.”
“In October 2020 we filmed and recorded five bands in four days, deep in the deep sand and iconic rocks of the desert,” shares LIVE IN THE MOJAVE DESERT producer RYAN JONES. “It was a major undertaking to bring this many people and this much gear out to a very remote desert location. Including the bands, we had 25 people onsite daily. With only one road in, everyone and all the gear had to come up a half mile long hill of deep sand--30 miles from nowhere. We had to hire local desert guys with huge 4x4 pickups to help. The Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show projected on a four-story high, double pyramid of boulders and we had a crack squad of filmmakers, photographers and recording engineers there to capture it all. It was insane, but it was worth it to see our favorite bands play again!”

Upending The Conventions – EMILY WOLFE
‘Something Better’ is the current single by Austin, Texas based singer-songwriter and acclaimed guitarist Emily Wolfe.
Taken from her forthcoming new album, ‘Outlier’, the song begins with a thrumming synth-pop beat that transforms into a buoyant rock tune with a hypnotic guitar melody, flawlessly showing off the confident, intriguing and always unpredictable nature of her new sound.
The colourful clip focuses on a fanciful day in Wolfe’s life and utilises humour to tackle a difficult subject. The song describes the feeling of being stuck in a particular place or situation, with the video showing Emily performing mundane activities with a childlike and inventive twist, such as eating candy food ‘cooked’ in a toy kitchen.
“It captures the dream-like world I was in when I wrote the song,” explains Wolfe. “It adds a fun flare to a pretty heavy song and the intention was to balance out the serious nature of the lyric. Beth Garrabrant had this killer treatment and idea to pull a '90s childhood theme into today's world, which reflects a lot of the song, while the director Barbara FG really nailed the visuals. I love how subversive '90s videos were, so that was another inspiration. It was amazing working with two really supportive, smart and creative women on this. My bass player Evan Nicholson and drummer Clellan Hyatt also brought their characters to life naturally. I think we all made something really great together.”
The video also features Wolfe’s signature Epiphone Sheraton Stealth guitar, which was recently released for retail sale.
The ten new songs contained on ‘Outlier’ explore Wolfe’s diverse writing and guitar playing skills. Produced and co-written by Michael Shuman of Queens Of The Stone Age and Mini Mansions, the resulting body of work finds Wolfe upending the conventions of multiple genres, including rock and pop, ultimately arriving at a guitar-drenched sound that is wildly unpredictable and immediately magnetic.
After first seeing Wolfe ‘shred’ at a NAMM convention and subsequently monitoring her development, Epiphone recently unveiled her signature guitar, which Wolfe also helped to design. Its sleek black finish and vintage details were designed to make it look as though it was made for anyone and everyone.
The second album by Emily Wolfe, ‘Outlier’ is built on exquisite tension: an endless push-and-pull between desire and resistance, determination and self-sabotage, the instinctive need to belong and the urge to strike out on one’s own.
For help in channeling that complexity of feeling, the Austin-based singer-songwriter and guitarist explored and obliterated the boundaries of rock-and-roll and modern pop, mining equal inspiration from the likes of Judas Priest and Ariana Grande in her bold but masterful genre-bending. After completing basic tracking for the songs, Wolfe and Shuman layered on new and unexpected textures with the help of programmed drums and beautifully warped synth tones. “Before this album, my approach was to know exactly what I was going to do when I went into the studio, but this time I wanted to leave room for a lot of creativity and weirdness,” says Wolfe. “In a way it felt like jumping into the unknown with a blindfold on, but I just trusted that the risk would pay off.” This shift in approach has essentially reshaped her identity as an artist.
“Making this record aligned with my journey as a person, and helped me grow into someone who no longer sees things in black and white,” she continues. “It taught me that I don’t have to try to fit into one box. I can take the energy of rock and blues, which is very on-the-fly and spontaneous and raw, and blend that with the polish of pop music, where everything is much more intentional. I feel like I’m a totally different musician now than I was five years ago, like I’ve grown into myself. I’m finally able to show people who I am and not be afraid of it.”
A Formidable Artist – Cassadee Pope
Cassadee Pope has released the music video for her explosive new single, “What The Stars See.“
The video, directed by Ed Pryor and Executive Produced by Wes Edwards, is a colourful take on the voyeuristic sensibilities of famed sci-fi action film, Blade Runner, and includes special appearances by both of the track’s featured artists, Karen Fairchild and Lindsay Ell. The visually captivating video premiered on Friday (14/5) exclusively on People.com and is available everywhere now
“The director, Ed Pryor, had me at the Blade Runner reference from his pitch! The video represents the frustrating inner dialog of wanting to know what your ex is doing now that you don’t have the luxury of knowing anymore," says Pope. "The song itself is bold and intense, so I’m incredibly excited that we were able to emulate that in the video with its dramatic lighting effects and energetic live performance.”
What The Stars See
“What The Stars See” was written by Pope, Jake Rose and Lindsey Rimes, and was produced by Nick Wheeler (All-American Rejects) and Karen Fairchild (Little Big Town.) The track blends Pope’s two musical worlds; pop-punk where her career began, and Country music that has always felt like home to her. As she continues to grow into a formidable artist, it was important for Pope that she merge influences and sounds to make something she is truly proud of and reflects who she is at this stage.
A Dystopian Picture – KIRLIAN CAMERA
With “Cold Pills (Scarlet Gate of Toxic Daybreak)”, KIRLIAN CAMERA deliver their darkest music yet.
At the same time, the Italian electro-provocateurs par excellence have added a subconscious metallic vibe into their already wide-ranging sound on this massive double album. This subtle but audible shift away from more pop leaning experiments in the past, maintains the main duo’s uncanny ability to compose catchy and captivating electronic hymns, but gives their new songs a more sinister spin.
This most recent transformation of KIRLIAN CAMERA fits the constantly evolving, ever changing band that has always been restlessly searching for new answers and still finds fresh perspective – although these already legendary veterans are celebrating their most impressive 40th anniversary.
The current incarnation of KIRLIAN CAMERA with its subtle dark rock undertones might come as a surprise to some, but just means a return to his roots for the band’s founder, multi-instrumentalist Angelo Bergamini (electronics, synthesizers, e-guitars), who took his first musical steps closely linked to HAWKWIND during their “Lemmy Kilmister period” and has worked with YES-guitarist Trevor Rubin back in the days. The Italian’s new bass player Mia Wallace comes with strong ties to the realm of metal through her involvement with ABBATH and NERVOSA among others and guitarist Alessandro Comerio also plays drums in Tom Gabriel Fischer’s TRIUMPH OF DEATH and plucks the bass for FORGOTTEN TOMB.
Yet, KIRLIAN CAMERA are foremost always themselves and this remains true for “Cold Pills” as well. As a given constant in all the works of the band and as distinctive as Angelo Bergamini’s trademark musical handwriting are the stunning vocals of the other half of the original core duo: Elena Alice Fossi’s voice covers an amazing range of expression from the darkly seductive via the dangerously hypnotic to ethereal beauty – and every emotion in between.
As contemporary artists, KIRLIAN CAMERA are painting a dystopian picture with “Cold Pills” that reflects in the bleak monochrome artwork, the music, and in the lyrics. The ongoing pandemic has left its traces too. “This is the dark, toxic, and sometimes dreamy world of ‘Cold Pills’ and its sub-title ‘Scarlet Gate of Toxic Daybreak’ too”, reveals Elena Alice Fossi. “It is an obscure world plagued by altered states and malaise, by rituals and facts that go beyond explainable limits.”
Such multi-layered constructions as well as transcendent and subversive content have always been at the core of the art of KIRLIAN CAMERA. Their unapologetic at times outrageous ability to provoke and to hold a truth-telling mirror to the world has sparked more than one controversy in the past. Yet, the Italians have never been using provocation for its own sake or succumbed to mindless destructive impulses. Their artistic course seeks the extraordinary contrast between the pleasing and the gloomy, the otherworldly and the dreamy, and is probably unique in the world of music for this very reason.
After all these decades filled with celebrated albums, of which many are already considered modern classics, and on an artistic path that knows no rest and constantly heads towards new horizons, KIRLIAN CAMERA have again created a fascinating masterpiece with “Cold Pills” that brings their dark and mysterious aura another step closer to perfection.

Boat Faced – Dustin Lynch and Chris Lane
Just in time for summer, country stars Dustin Lynch and Chris Lane hit the sandbar – and “blame it on the Julio” – in sun-drunk bobber, “Tequila On A Boat” (BMG / Broken Bow Records), available now at all streaming platforms and digital retailers.
“‘Tequila On A Boat’ is a song that points to the absolute perfect day during the summertime,” shares Lynch. “I love being on the water. There’s just something that’s grounding to me, and I’ve made so many memories over the years with great friends, being on a boat, and just doing life together. ‘Tequila On A Boat’ puts me in that headspace no matter where I am, and I hope it does to you too.”
Best paired with salt and a lime, the Zach Crowell-produced sunny, buddy-Country anthem was penned by Hillary Lindsey, Justin Ebach, and Matt Alderman. Going anchor down with drinks in the air, the guys set course for a much-needed 98-degree buzz – floating on a carefree wave with shades-on vocals and a no-worries beat.
Dropping a straight-shot slo-mo music video directed by Mason Dixon, watch as they throw a wet-and-wild boat bash on the lake. From a bachelorette party to some skinny dippers, fans can keep watch for Lynch and Lane, as individual parties pop off all around them.

FEAR FACTORY records are cinematic in scope; sonic landscapes, echoing the dystopian post-apocalyptic futures found in classic sci-fi literature and films, from Ray Bradbury to Blade Runner. Aggression Continuum, the tenth studio album, is the culmination of three decades of unforgettable songs, performances, and forward-thinking storytelling concepts, while simultaneously rebooting FEAR FACTORY onto a brilliant and excitingly unpredictable new path. Like the liquid metal T-1000 in the Terminator franchise or the Academy-Award winning reboot of Mad Max, Aggression Continuum is a turning point where what “was” transforms into what will be. It’s FEAR FACTORY’s own Fury Road.

Arizona Monsters – Go Ahead And Die
Arizona’s raw and unrelenting trio Go Ahead And Die will release their self-titled debut album on June 11th via Nuclear Blast Records. Now, the band offer fans their third single ‘Roadkill‘.
"'Roadkill' is about the homeless and the veterans left on the street to fight for themselves after they offered to sacrifice their lives for us. It’s a cry of desperation for homeless people who society views as roadkill."
Max Cavalera
Born from the minds of creative writer and musician Igor Amadeus Cavalera of Healing Magic and extreme metal icon Max Cavalera, Go Ahead And Die‘s tempos are wild, filled with a palpable contempt for modern social ills, packed with monstrous, captivating riffs. They make angry, spiteful, spirited extreme music for increasingly extreme times.
The self-titled debut sees Max and Igor splitting guitar and vocal duties, with madman style drumming from Zach Coleman of blistering band Black Curse and critically-acclaimed Khemmis. G.A.A.D. sound like a relic from the glory days of thrash, proto-death metal, and filthy rotten punk.
The vocals weren’t tracked over and over in the pursuit of some kind of “perfect” takes, and Coleman didn’t play to a click-track. The heart and soul of G.A.A.D. is all about just going for it, the traditional way. Engineer Charles Elliot captured the sessions with the help of Platinum Underground Studio owner John Aquilino. The album was mixed by Arthur Rizk, whose credits include Power Trip, Cro-Mags, and Cavalera Conspiracy The artwork for the album was created by Stewart Easton while the circle logo was created by Jeff Walker (Carcass).

Heads Up Sisters And Brothers – PAIN
PAIN have always been known not only for their exciting mix of catchy melodies, majestic harmonies and powerful industrial metal rhythms, but for also having a fine sense for combining current world affairs with all-time classics, uniting people across generations and borders.
Mastermind Peter Tägtgren proves this gifted instinct once more and have released a unique interpretation of the ROLLING STONES masterpiece ‘Gimme Shelter’.
Peter Tägtgren stated about the single: "I had the idea of covering 'Gimme Shelter' for years… And now it feels like it’s the perfect time to do it – 'cause today this song appears as important as it was when it first came out 52 years ago. Back then it was the Cold War, today it is the war on Covid."
Stream the single on all platforms: https://pain.bfan.link/gimme-shelter
PAIN are the brainchild of musician, producer and composer Peter Tägtgren – Sweden’s finest industrial metal export. His life has been immersed in music, pushing boundaries, and taking ideas to their logical and illogical extremes. It’s been a career that has involved fronting bands – notably iconic death metal veterans HYPOCRISY, and PAIN – or shaping their sounds – as he has done with CELTIC FROST, CHILDREN OF BODOM, DIMMU BORGIR and IMMORTAL amongst others. It’s a calling that has made him one of Europe’s most respected musicians and producers. For the recordings of ‘Gimme Shelter’, he has been joined by his son Sebastian Tägtgren playing the drums on this song.
