Instant Gratification – Flight Attendant

Flight Attendant are a Nashville based indie band who were making a name for themselves as a live proposition locally before Covid-19 shuttered venues.

‘Paradise’ is the group’s second single of 2021 and will be promoted with a livestream performance in Nashville at 8pm local time tonight (ie 2am Saturday 8th UK time) via reddit.com/r/RedditSessions . It will subsequently be available to view on the band’s YouTube channel and various social media pages.

‘Paradise’ follows a brace of musically contrasting 2020 singles in the form of hypnotic and pulsating guitar based ‘Man Of Chaos’ and the sensuous yet sombre piano-centred ballad ‘Comedy Show’ (timed to coincide with the US presidential election), plus the post-punk earworm ‘Dogs’ that was issued in early 2021.

‘Paradise’ is an exhilarating rush with a timely title as the world slowly emerges out of lockdown. Reflected in its promo clip, shot in a local junkyard with the group members indulging in high jinks, they describe the song as “about feeling a release, whether that’s good behaviour, bad behaviour, or something in the grey. Whatever was holding you back or making you feel restricted in some way, this song is about those immediate feelings that come after, revelling in instant gratification and then assessing situations for what they are.”

The debut album by Flight Attendant will be released later in 2021 by Moraine Music in association with Membran. They are ready for takeoff.

Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs have been a hotbed for exciting new artists and UgLi is no exception.

Guitarist & vocalist Dylyn Durante watched bands play in a seedy South Jersey basement and decided that she wanted to be the one sweating it out on beer soaked floors. Over the course of three years, UgLi has gone from an idea to a fully realized band that is fueled by a hunger to play live and continuously grow as songwriters.

After releasing their debut EP, Scattergood, in 2019, UgLi spent 2020 hunkered down in The Gradwell House to track their debut LP. FUCK is an eight song effort that takes elements of early alternative, punk, and grunge and makes it feel fresh. “Bad Egg” is a perfect example of their ability to weave in and out of each genre. The band treats each verse so delicate before barreling into fuzzed out choruses as Dylyn sings about mental health and medication. The band teamed up with Tony Goggles to put together a music video for “Bad Egg” and you can view it now at Flood Magazine. FUCKis being self-released by the band and will be available on all digital platforms on Friday, June 18th.

FUCK. It’s an all-caps exclamation, a sharp proclamation, and a rallying cry. That’s also the name of the debut record from Philly/South Jersey quartet UgLi. Across eight tracks that hearken back to gloom-doom 90s alt-rock and leap towards power-pop majesty, FUCK is more than deserving of its title. The band promises a welcome release of tension that needs no introduction, just your attention. Assembled over an uncertain 2020, the record finds Dave Downham (Pet Symmetry, mewithoutYou) and the band honing in on a sound that relishes in being rough around the edges—anything else would betray UgLi’s internal monologue.

2021’s UgLi—guitarist/vocalist Dylyn Durante (she/her), bassist Lucas Gisonti (he/him), guitarist Andrew Iannarelli (he/him), and drummer Teddy Paullin (he/him)—live in the tender space between dreams and nightmares. Durante likens her emotional squalor to a “House Pet” as the record begins, lets her brain splay open over a flame through “Bad Egg,” and finds ways to navigate love when Cupid’s arrows are pointed elsewhere twice in the runtime. These arty self-reflections are boosted by a band that screeches and shouts alongside her, leading to standout moments like “Superball,” where a narrative of finding one’s place gets jumbled as punk-rock pacing scatters the map. There’s even room for the nine-minute orchestral splendor of closer “Naegleriasis,” where certain brain death is fought with swells of saxophone and trumpet. No matter your entry point into UgLi’s charm, you’ll certainly be saying something.

Looking For Closure – Cassadee Pope

Platinum-certified singer-songwriter, Cassadee Pope, has released her latest single, “What The Stars See” featuring Karen Fairchild and Lindsay Ell. The track was written by Pope, Jake Rose and Lindsey Rimes, and was produced by Nick Wheeler (All-American Rejects) and Karen Fairchild (Little Big Town.)

"I was inspired to write 'What The Stars See' after sitting outside one night looking up at the stars, curious what their perspective might be looking down on us,” said Pope. "It made me think back to times in my life when I had just come out of a relationship but still felt so connected to the other person. I imagined having the superpower to be among the stars and observe, from their perspective, an ex moving on with their life (or not)."

A Vibrant Spin – La Armada

La Armada has released a ferocious new single and music video titled “Death On Replay.”

The Chicago by way of the Dominican Republic 5-piece has completed production on its next album “Anti-Colonial Vol. 2,” which is set for release later this year via the band’s own label Mal De Ojo Records in the U.S. The album will be released via Thousand Islands Records in Canada and Lockjaw Records in Europe and the UK.

La Armada’s focus is to leave their mark on heavy music. A punk band at heart, they utilize elements of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and metal to create a style as unique as their story. Formed in the Dominican Republic in 2001 from where they dominated the Caribbean scene for years, the band opted to take a leap and relocate to Chicago in 2008, where they still reside.

Influenced by bands ranging from the Bad Brains to Death, they take elements from their native Island’s music to conjure a unique recipe; explosive live energy, and a clear cut narrative that highlights the effects of neo-colonialism on vulnerable communities.

Whether headlining tours throughout the world or supporting the likes of Sick of it All, Propagandhi, Strung Out, Death by stereo, and more, La Armada has come to bring a vibrant spin to the scene.

Chicago legends of murder metal/death metal MACABRE released their demented, heinous bloodbath of an album Carnival Of Killers in November 2020via Nuclear Blast. Today, the band releases an animated music video for track ‘Richard Speck Grew Big Breasts’.

In 1996, award-winning news journalist Bill Kurtis debuted a series on Chicago’s WBBM-TV displaying video clips of Richard Speck and two other inmates in a staff training area inside the maximum security Stateville Correctional Center. The footage included Speckdetailing how he was enjoying himself in prison by engaging in sexual acts as well as showing the use of illegal substances. Speck‘s appearance was noticeably altered as he had used illicitly supplied female hormones to grow breasts.

MACABRE‘s Corporate Death comments, “I started getting the idea to write this song after seeing the Speck videos on Channel 2 News here in Chicago. We played it out a few times soon after including an appearance on the top-rated Mancow’s Morning Madhouse radio program but only recently has it been properly recorded and released for our Carnival Of Killers album. I wanted to give it a punk rock feel, I was going to a lot of club shows then and was inspired by Dayglo Abortions, 7 Seconds, MDC, and vocally by D.I.“

Cyan Tempest is the musical vehicle for multi-instrumentalist, producer/composer Aleksander McMillan.

Starting his musical journey at the age of 9, he first picked up the electric guitar and since then has taught himself to play multiple instruments including bass, drums, piano which allow him to create full band productions. His musical career is one that has taken many shapes and forms, most notably as the lead guitarist and producer of rock band Salt River Shakedown.

Alek has always aspired to release music of his own as a producer, Cyan Tempest is the alter ego that allows his imagination to run wild with creativity, producing everything entirely on his own, from song-writing to recording all his instruments, production, mixing and mastering, completed at his studio. Debut single Elevate gives us a peak into his pop infused R&B world.

A Talented All-rounder – Alexander Ludwig

BBR Music Group/BMG proudly announces the signing of a global recording deal with multi-talented artist, Alexander Ludwig. Ludwig’s self-titled debut EP, due out May 21st, is the sound of a longtime musician staking his claim in the genre that’s always inspired him. Produced by fellow songwriters Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy (both members of Jason Aldean’s band) Alexander Ludwig funnels the talented musician’s love of storytelling into five songs that blend old-school twang with modern muscle.

Inspired by the classic (Alan Jackson, George Strait) and contemporary (Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Eric Church) sounds he grew up with, Ludwig’s forthcoming EP follows his 2020 song, “Let Me Be Your Whiskey,” which he co-wrote with Mike Dulaney (Faith Hill’s “The Way You Love Me”).

“I’ve been drawn to Country music since I was handed my first guitar at nine years old. Life is about the journey and I am so grateful to take these next steps in music with Loba, BBR Music Group/BMG and the community in Nashville and want to thank them for taking a chance and believing in me,” said Ludwig. “I can’t wait to share this music that represents a taste of what I love about Country music.”

In a genre rooted in honesty, Ludwig is the real deal. He is a lifelong Country fan who knows how it feels to roll up his sleeves, get to work and chase down his dreams. And while he’s already found success in Hollywood – with leading roles in Vikings, Lone Survivor, The Hunger Games, and Bad Boys For Life – he isn’t expecting anyone in Nashville to simply roll out the red carpet for him. He’s going to earn it, one song at a time.

Raised outside of Vancouver, listening to Country greats, Ludwig wrote his first song at age 12 and has been writing ever since—imagining each song unfolding like miniature films. After years of fitting as many trips as he could to Nashville to hone his songwriting chops, Ludwig crossed paths with and became fast friends with Jason Aldean bandmembers and songwriters, Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy, who jumped at the chance to produce his new music.

In addition to working on new music, the well-rounded entertainer recently starred in Bad Boys for Life opposite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence (which smashed box office records and became the most successful film in the Bad Boys franchise). “I always get a little extra confidence from tequila, and the line was really just a way to meet girls at the bar” Marlowe joked about the upbeat tune. “We’ve gotten to play this one live a few times already and the reaction has felt so positive. I’m also such a sucker for a fiddle in a country song, so this is one of my favorite songs we’ve released so far.”

Marlowe co-wrote the charmer with Ray Fulcher and Dan Isbell. Soulful Amexicana – Alma Grace

Mexican-American artist & activist Alma Grace releases her highly-anticipated debut EP, ‘FRIDA.’ The 4-song EP includes previous singles, “Girl Fight” and “Aventura,” as well as two brand new tracks, “Relámpago” and “Aztlán.”

Alma Grace has been inspired by Frida Kahlo’s life and work ever since she can remember. She first learned of her through the Frida-adorned matchboxes and coasters her Grandmother would bring over from Mexico City. As she grew older and started to learn more about Kahlo as both a woman and an artist, Grace became enthralled by the ways in which the Mexican painter redefined beauty standards and broke down the boundaries places on gender, race and sexuality. “In contrast to classmates and casting directors who criticized me for not being ‘white enough,’ Frida made me feel beautiful for my bushy eyebrows and black hair,” Grace writes. While the ‘FRIDA’ EP is certainly a project inspired by a feminist icon, it’s also an exploration of the ways in which Kahlo’s legacy has helped shape Grace into the woman and artist she is today. “When I listen to these songs, I hear my transformation from an angsty teen to a semi-independent young adult,” she writes of the EP. “It’s such a special project to me, and I knew that it had to be my artist introduction to the world.”

Weaving Spanish and English lyricism throughout the EP, as well as a blend of traditional latin sounds and modern pop melodies, Grace has created a beautiful ode to her bicultural roots. Her narrative-driven lyricism is enchanting, with each song delivering dual stories that tie back to both Kahlo and Grace’s lives. “Aventura” is an ode to adventure and affairs, something that Grace has always admired in Kahlo’s rich history. “Girl Fight” is a queer, feminist anthem that was inspired by Grace’s favorite Kahlo story: after her husband Diego Rivera cheated on her, she had an affair with the same woman. “Aztlan” is about the mythical homeland of the Aztec people and pays homage to both Grace and Kahlo’s ancestral roots. Lastly, “Relámpago” is all about coping with pain — the physical pain Kahlo suffered due to her near fatal bus accident and the emotional trauma Grace dealt with after being sexually assaulted.

Alma Grace launched her music project last year with a string of captivating singles. Her mixed musical influences are reflective of a globalized upbringing— she learned how to love from Selena, make witty comebacks from Shania Twain, and turn pain into art from Lauryn Hill. In addition to her budding music career, Grace has also performed on Broadway and Lincoln Center stages, been featured at Tribeca Film Festival, and acted in a multitude of films and TV shows.

Despite only being 21 years old, the NYC born-and-raised songstress has also had an impressive career in social justice. As an activist, she attended her first protest at the age of 13, has volunteered with community-based organizations in Harlem, and has worked in both the Bronx and the U.S. Senate to defend immigrants facing deportation — a cause close to her heart as a second generation Mexican-American.
