A Fresh Lick – PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS

Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets today announce details of their forthcoming fifth studio album Night Gnomes, due for release on 8th April via Marathon Artists / What Reality? Records.

Crashing through with another addictive, thrilling release to tease the divinely warped and curious sonic mind of songwriter Jack McEwan, Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets present new single ‘Bubblegum Infinity’. Taken from the forthcoming Night Gnomes, the single is both a fitting example of what to expect from the broader album as it is a timely reminder of the ease of which Psychedelic Porn Crumpets can weave many distinctive creative sounds in making something definitively their own. The band also share another cut of the record in the shape of ‘Dread and Butter’, a more introspective acoustic track that showcases the full breadth of McEwan’s creative output.

Just as we saw with the band’s 2021 single ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’, ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ comes layered with rich guitars and a decidedly more rock feel. However, ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ stands apart with its careening melodies and hypnotic vocals, with McEwan describing it as:

“Our cute little playful member of the Night Gnomes club. I think there's mixed opinions of this song in the group but I'm sticking by it. I like its pop sensibility and melancholy notions. It's cheerful and good natured, it's not trying to be something profound, more a statement of life at this time and by calling it 'Bubblegum Infinity', we're showcasing that lighthearted vulnerability. So go easy on us, metal fans. A lot of the album is about trying to work out what the F#@! is going on, in general life and obviously the period of time we've all found ourselves dormant in for the past two years. I started reading a few quotes from philosophers because, hey! They might know what's going on, but mostly it was a bunch of cleverly worded gibberish that was drenched in self turmoil that thankfully, serendipitously, unbeknownst to me was the thing I found comfort in. That nobody has a clue what life is and we're all winging it as we go! Cheers, William of Ockham.”

Following the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets tradition of matching chaotic visuals to their musical counterparts, the band linked up with filmographer Tay Kaka for a fun day out to bring ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ to life:

“The video was created by our good friend Tay Kaka, the idea is exactly as it looks really, having fun at a pop-up theme park. We strapped some go-pros to our noggins and acted like jovial children for the day, which was lucky we didn’t need much practice. One day we’ll be adults but for now we’re scraping the barrel for any glimmers of wondrous adventure we can find.”

Particularly, when we put their new single in amongst the broader tapestry of Night Gnomes, ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ represents the balance between the previous eras of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, and their vision for what’s coming next. “The process for this album was a continuation from Shyga! I stepped up a few recording techniques and tried to hone in on the production side of things a little more, gave my mental train a fresh lick of paint and tried to make the album step up in quality from the previous four releases while still holding onto that ‘crumpet’ approach to songwriting. In my mind it feels like a summary of everything we’ve previously released, a nice package for new fans to enjoy but also a nod to the ‘High Visceral’ days for the older fans.”

RECORDS Nashville/Arista Nashville Platinum-selling artist Matt Stell‘s latest track ‘Boyfriend Season‘ is available to stream/download everywhere now, following the success of US radio single ‘That Ain’t Me No More’ last year.

Co-written by Stell with Zach Abend, Seth Ennis and Geoff Warburton, and co-produced by the artist with Ash Bowers, ‘Boyfriend Season’ marked his first new music in seven months and gives fans a taste of new music to come in 2022. Listen to ‘Boyfriend Season’ here.

“When it comes to break-ups I think everybody spends a lot of time in their own head, especially deep down when you know that breaking up might be a mistake, it might be your fault, or at least you could’ve done more to give the relationship a fair chance of succeeding,” said Stell of the new song. He added, “That’s a kinda hard thing to face, so I think sometimes we try to talk ourselves into feeling better about the situation.‘That Ain’t Me No More’ and ‘Everywhere But On’ is this happening from the guy’s perspective. ‘Boyfriend Season’ is the flip side of the coin where the girl in the song is having to deal with those feelings of not having 100% closure on stuff. And also, “tell your friends it ain’t boyfriend season” is also really fun to yell at a concert!”

Rocking The Boat – Gunshine

Gunshine released their brand new debut single titled “Wall Said To Call” to all major platforms!

“Wall Said To Call is a fun, adrenaline-filled, party rock song with all of the elements of real rock n roll. Loud, edgy guitars, soaring vocals, and slamming drums” says the band.

Gunshine is a rock n roll band hailing from Pensacola, FL. While spending all of 2020 and 2021 writing and recording their debut album, they honed in on what makes them stand apart, and what they do best. Due out in 2022, the album recalls the edge and bravado of rock’s greats such as AC/DC, Boston, and Guns N Roses, but with an original, modern twist. You already know Flo Gallop. You’ve already heard her voice, it’s a pitch-perfect, beautiful, arm-around-the-shoulders version of the one in your head.

Flo is the voice we all need, She’s the beat behind our breakdowns and the word-perfect poetry of our bounce-back pick-ups. South-east London born and bred, Flo was raised around music, her dad made songwriting feel like breathing. Without it she would choke. So, she sat, scribbling words, diarising an everyday life through the musicality and soul of a natural artist that would eventually emerge, fully formed, as a friend in your ears.

Her latest single “sorry for you, mate” rings true to the songwriter’s honest and playful storytelling lyricism. Written from the heart, the single speaks of the demise of a relationship and focuses on celebrating the loss of a negative person in your life, rather than mourning it.

Brick Lane Jazz Festival – a new three-day, multi-venue jazz festival in the heart of Brick Lane – have announced details of their inaugural festival which will take place across 22^nd – 24^th April 2022.

Making its debut at The Truman Brewery on Brick Lane in London, the festival will be set across five stages over three days with twenty-four artists performing, showcasing some of the most exciting acts on London’s vibrant jazz scene.

Whilst located at The Truman Brewery, the festival’s stages and line-ups are hosted by some of the most important venues in East London including Ninety One Living Room, Werkhaus, Cafe 1001 and Juju’s Bar & Stage, as well as renowned musical institution Rough Trade East.

Today, Brick Lane Jazz Festival are very excited to announce the line-up for their debut 2022 programme:

Brick Lane Jazz Festival is presented by The Truman Brewery and is the first of its kind in uniting the iconic site’s music venues under a single umbrella event to showcase the best emerging talent and world class acts on the London jazz scene.

Celebrating London’s international communities and the wealth of culture the capital has to offer, the festival provides an opportunity to showcase emerging underground artists who are taking jazz into new realms, as well as some of the trailblazers who are leading the charge by crossing boundaries and bringing diversity including the likes of: Blue Lab Beats, Sheila Maurice Grey, Dan Casimir, Binker Golding, Jelly Cleaver, Kansas Smitty’s, and more. The festival will also showcase some of the city’s best electronic and experimental outfits with the likes of Ariwo and WheelUP, as well as critically acclaimed artists from the Afro, Cuban and Latino scenes such as Cubafrobeat and Fehdah, with the ten-piece Sambroso All Stars cover band to close the festival on Sunday night, playing the seminal Buena Vista Social Club album in full. There will also be daytime DJ sets alongside the main headline acts.

Brick Lane Jazz Festival is organised by the Creative Director of Music Venues for The Truman Brewery, Juliet Kennedy, and renowned musician, promoter, and community builder Oreste Noda (Funkiwala). Speaking on the festival, Kennedy says:

Kohei Yoshiyuki: 1946 – 2022

RIP Kohei Yoshiyuki (吉行耕平, Yoshiyuki Kōhei, 1946 – 29 January 2022).

Kohei Yoshiyuki was a Japanese photographer who attracted much attention in 1979 with his exhibition “Kōen” (公園, Park) at the Komai Gallery, Tokyo. The black-and-white photographs were presented in a book published in 1980 that is “nominally a soft-core voyeur’s manual”, with photographs of people in sexual activities in Shinjuku and Yoyogi parks (both in Tokyo), mostly with unknown spectators around them. The photographs were taken with a 35mm camera and infrared flashbulbs. Gerry Badger and others have commented on how the photographs raise questions about the boundaries between spectator, voyeur and participant.

Yoshiyuki’s works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), and North Carolina Museum of Art (Raleigh).

Examples of Yoshiyuki’s series The Park were included in the exhibition Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera which was on view at Tate Modern from 28 May to 3 October 2010.

Dark Fuzz – Velvet

Following a sold-out hometown headline show and their subsequent
addition to the Glasgow leg of Stag & Dagger, Velvet are set to return
with new single “I Prefer You (In My Head)”, following up their release
of “Black and Blue” at the end of 2020.

Produced by double SAY nominated Chris McCrory (Cheap Teeth, Catholic Action & SPINN), the song displays their typical thematically dark song writing against an eccentric and raw punk background. I Prefer You (In My Head) is to be released 18/2/22.
