Pink Mountaintops – Down A Thousand Rabbit Holes
Pink Mountaintops, the exploratory and enigmatic project of Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean, shares the video for the fantastically punchy and piano-laced twist on Black Flag’s pent-up classic ‘Nervous Breakdown’ which opens the upcoming Pink Mountaintops album Peacock Pools, out on 6th May 2022 via new label home ATO Records.
McBean has made a playful video to accompany the ‘Nervous Breakdown’ single release, cutting together found footage with appearances from McBean, Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), violinist/vocalist Laena Myers-Ionita (Feels, Death Valley Girls), drummer/pianist Joshua Wells (Destroyer, Black Mountain), and drummer Ryan Jewell (Ryley Walker).
“Steven McDonald used to always play a disco version of that bassline to annoy [Black Flag co-founder] Keith Morris when they were sound-checking for OFF!, and it ended up fitting perfectly with the demo I’d made,” McBean reveals, referring to McDonald and Morris’s hardcore supergroup.
Keith Morris (Black Flag / Circle Jerks / OFF!) emphatically approves of this new version, sharing: “Great job taking a song that’s been beaten to death by numerous punker dunkers and turning it into your own song! BRAVO!!!!”
In February, Pink Mountaintops marked their triumphant return after eight years with the announcement of Peacock Pools, ushering in this new era proudly with the rollicking, ‘70s-invoking sonic blast of lead single ‘Lights Of The City’ accompanied by a video directed by George Mays.
Pre-orders for Peacock Pools are available now and include limited-edition gold vinyl, indie exclusive splatter vinyl, CD, and digital. Pre-order here: https://smarturl.it/Peacock_Pools
Peacock Pools, out 6th May 2022 on ATO Records
Since their 2004 self-titled debut, Pink Mountaintops have supplied an outlet for the more arcane fascinations of Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean. On Peacock Pools—Pink Mountaintops’ first new music in eight years—the British Columbia-born singer/ songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist shares 12 songs sparked from his magpie-like curiosity for a wild expanse of cultural artifacts: the sci-fi body horror of David Cronenberg, Disney Read-Along Records from the 1970s, early Pink Floyd and mid-career Gary Numan, John Carpenter movies, Ornette Coleman live videos, a 1991 essay on the cult of bodybuilding by postmodern feminist Camille Paglia. Featuring counterculture icons like Steven McDonald of Redd Kross and Dale Crover of Melvins, Peacock Pools alchemizes those obsessions into a body of work with its own enchanting power, the sonic equivalent of falling down a thousand rabbit holes at once and landing somewhere gloriously strange.
Peacock Pools track listing:
1. Nervous Breakdown
2. Nikki Go Sudden
3. Blazing Eye
4. You Still Around
5. Shake The Dust
6. Swollen Maps
7. Lights Of The City
8. Miss Sundown
9. Lady Inverted Cross
10 . Muscles
11. All This Death Is Killing Me
12. The Walk – Song For Amy
Pink Mountaintops’ fifth full-length and debut release for ATO Records, Peacock Pools took shape from a batch of songs McBean first pieced together in the early days of the pandemic. “I’d moved into this cool little ’50s rancher house outside L.A. and was just mucking about in my bedroom studio, and pretty soon I started reaching out to some friends who were also shacked up and craving broadband sonic collaboration,” he recalls. Over the coming months, McBean began working remotely with a stacked lineup of musicians from the indie-rock and psych-pop and garage-punk worlds, including drummer/pianist Joshua Wells (Destroyer, Black Mountain), violinist/vocalist Laena Myers-Ionita (Feels, Death Valley Girls), drummer Ryan Jewell (Riley Walker, Steve Gunn), vocalist Emily Rose Epstein (Ty Segall, Emily Rose & The Rounders), and keyboardist Jeremy Schmidt (Black Mountain, Sinoia Caves). Produced by McBean and mixed in Vancouver by former Skinny Puppy member Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails), Peacock Pools also features several songs recorded live in L.A. with McDonald and Crover, ultimately forming Pink Mountaintops most eclectic and magnificently unpredictable album to date.

Allan Rayman – A Ghost Of A Chance
Whoever Allan Rayman is, he’s made a hell of a body of work so far. The Wyoming born, Toronto based artist has delivered one head-scratching, hypnotic and heavenly project after another, including Hotel Allan [2016], Courtney EP [2017], Roadhouse 01 [2017], Harry Hard-On [2018], and CHRISTIAN [2020].
Along the way, he generated over 250 million streams, sold out tours in Europe, The United States and Canada, and shined at festivals, including Reading & Leads, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Ohana, Austin City Limits, and Osheaga. In the midst of this whirlwind, he gained a newfound clarity and applied it to finishing ROADHOUSE 02 during the Global Pandemic.
Every side of Rayman shines on ROADHOUSE 02. Thematically inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s classic Slaughterhouse-Five, Rayman sonically nods back to the nocturnal R&B of his early work. The 13-track album focuses on the musician’s career to date; being signed and dropped, to the feeling of not being “the right guy for the job” and the struggle of finding positivity in all this negative space. Touching on maturity and the revelations that come with it, Rayman becomes unstuck in time and is shown his life and what’s to come of it if he continues to let Mr. Roadhouse have full control. It ultimately leads to depression and unfortunately death. ROADHOUSE 02 is Rayman being shown his options and having to make the decision on where he wants his life to go.
Opening track “Dead Frogs” is about studying his favorite artists and seeing where they went wrong.
He confides, “Most of them died young and if they didn’t they’d become something else that I would like to avoid.” Then there is “Lately” which speaks to the duality in people and how there is more than one personality in all of us, “Mine gets the better of me often and I let that happen especially for performance sake.”
The brooding “Good Enough” is about chasing something that ultimately is bad for you and that the steps along the way are the real important moments – happiness. Narrating the closing of a chapter, “Bye Bye Blondie” says goodbye to an old version of the artist – Christian album Allan. “Rider” sees the musician being able to view life in its entirety from beginning to end, learning how he can avoid going down a different road, so death doesn’t come for him. It allows him to become unstuck in time and move around the moments of his life as if he were visiting a zoo. “Ghost” is about an old friend who passed away that Allan believes has contacted him in his dreams.
“I believe it is when we are asleep that ghosts can communicate with us so as to not scare us.”
Rayman shares, “Together the songs and video tell a story of an artist who creates an alter ego to handle success in the music industry and what happens when you lose yourself in that character. Ultimately the album is by an artist for an artist. It shines light on the negatives that come with this career choice. With an underlying theme that our shortcomings as artists are our strength; makes for good music – real music.” ROADHOUSE 02 marks a new chapter for Allan Rayman.
GIVVEN – A Melancholic Journey
GIVVEN released their audiovisual EP, Losing Colours on the 24th of March via Bias Beach Records.
On the EP is the track, ‘Doubts’ – one of three unique songs with music videos shot in the beautiful landscapes of Iceland, all created with the award-winning director Rupert Höller and award-winning director of photography Adrian Bidron. GIVVEN have been supported by Dancing Astronaut, We Rave You, Tonspion and Mr Suicide Sheep.
One-third of the trio is Adrian Held, part of the renowned Klangkarussell duo who have recently been nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in both the Electronic/Dance category as well as Song Of The Year with their latest single, ‘Home’. GIVVEN released their hit debut single, ‘Ghostkeeper’ with Klangkarussell in early 2020 which has reached over 6,6 million views to date, followed by several more singles which would collect over 50 million plays across platforms with support across a wide variety of international publications and radio stations. The trio is comprised of Adrian Held who is from Austria and based in Berlin, Germany, Jordan Haller who is also from Austria and currently based in Toronto, Canada and Nikodem Milewski who is from Poland and based in Vienna. Nikodem Milewski is also responsible for mixing and mastering the EP and has previously worked with the likes of Robin Schulz and Gryffin, amongst others.
GIVVEN are taking us on a melancholic journey of self-reflection and uncertainty, showcased by a trio of carefully crafted creations. ‘Doubts’ introduces a rhythmic bassline that intermittently makes itself at home in your mind, riding the gentle storm of disquietude and thought-provoking lyrics. Their own texturally rich sound will find itself at home next to the laidback likes of Chet Faker, Son Lux and James Blake
Losing Colours EP Tracklist:
1. Losing Colours
2. Taking On Water
3. Doubts
Speaking about the EP track and video for ‘Doubts’, the band shared: “‘Doubts’ immediately grabs your ear, opening with very close and floaty falsetto vocals. Tapping into electronic roots, ‘Doubts’ starts with a gentle verse and chorus before dipping, then diving into a deeply effected vocal chop and bass-led drop. Constantly moving in different directions, ‘Doubts’ mirrors the chaos of an inner voice that’s constantly trying to lead you astray. The music video for ‘Doubts’ is a smokey, magma-infused art piece showcasing a dancer battling with her inner demons amidst an active volcano and dark, steaming lava fields looming ominously”
Daisy Harris – Bringing Love And Joy
Creating her own unique flavour of genre-fluid music Daisy Harris takes inspiration from the likes of The Sundays and The Lemonheads to cement her brand of indie-pop guitar music.
Her impressive musicianship shines through with her multi-instrumental ability and wonderfully translates into transcendental and heartfelt music.
Harris (vocals/ guitar/ banjo/ ukulele) has already worked the showcase circuit across Glasgow, as well as recently diving into the world of Manchester open mic performances.
Following on from her previous releases, the heart-wrenching ‘Come Home and intimate ‘Get Free’, ‘Shona’ paints an homage to platonic love as Harris’ reflects on the value of friendship. Despite sitting in pole position, ‘Shona’ was the last track to be recorded for her upcoming debut LP ‘Tornado Dreams’ and was the quickest with the producing process.
“Platonic love songs are my favourites to write, and this song in particular is so special to me. Shona’s been one of my best friends for years, and so it only felt right to begin the album with a tribute to her and all the love and joy she’s given me.”
– Daisy Harris on ‘Shona’
Starting off wistful and dreamy with blissful harmonies and subtle percussion, jovial acoustic guitar strums introduce us to the optimistic nature of Harris’ latest release. Repeating “be without you” throughout the delicate track, Harris writes a love song to Shona, and her inability to imagine life without her. Written, recorded, and produced at home in her living room before being mastered by David Griffiths, Harris’ latest number ups the ante for her debut record.
Set for release early next month, ‘Tornado Dreams’ is an homage to the trials and tribulations of teenage years, of love and loss, and navigating friendships during a national lockdown. Not one to be missed, Harris’ musical maturity shines through here ability to wear her heart on her sleeve and lay bare her inhibitions.
‘Tornado Dreams’ Tracklist:
Your Danger
Again And Again
Gregory Crewdson
East Midlands Soliloquy
All The Time
How Would You Like It?
Dreamer
Foreverforever
Dandelion Salad
The Boy
Gelato
‘Tornado Dreams’ is set for release 8th April 2022.

Chameleons – A Never Ending Story
Metropolis Records recently welcomed the legendary UK post-punk act Chameleons to its label roster.
Long cited as a hugely influential act, having inspired the likes of (The) Verve, Oasis, Interpol, The Killers and Editors, the group was formed in Manchester in 1981 and comprised vocalist/bassist Mark Burgess, guitarists Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, plus drummer John Lever. They released three classic albums – ‘Script of the Bridge’ (1983), ‘What Does Anything Mean? Basically’ (1985) and ‘Strange Times’ (1986) – before breaking up.
More than a decade passed as each member of the group worked on separate musical projects, until the dawning of the new millennium finally saw the quartet reunite for successful tours in the UK, mainland Europe and the US. The acoustic album ‘Strip’ was released to coincide, while a fourth studio album entitled ‘Why Call It Anything?’ was subsequently issued in 2001 that The Encyclopedia of Popular Music stated was “a stunning reaffirmation of the brilliance of this unsung band.”
The following year saw the release of ‘This Never Ending Now’, another acoustic rendering of songs from their back catalogue, before they again disbanded in 2003.
Burgess eventually reunited with Lever as ChameleonsVox, performing and touring Chameleons material all over the world between 2009-2014 and releasing one EP just prior to Lever’s departure at the end of 2013 (he died in 2017). Another line-up centred around Burgess (accompanied by Yves Altana, Neil Dwerryhouse and Chris Oliver) saw him tour more regularly than at any point in his career prior to the pandemic, including shows in Australia and China as well as regular strongholds such as the UK, mainland Europe and North America.
Chameleons have now joined forces with Metropolis Records to release ‘Edge Sessions (Live From The Edge)’, a collection of seven classic Chameleons songs performed live in May 2021 by founding group members Burgess and Smithies, plus Chris Oliver (guitar) and Stephen Rice (drums). Three additional bonus tracks of ChameleonsVox era live recordings round out this stunning release.
2022 has already seen the group play a well received UK tour, albeit with three shows forcibly postponed due to Covid issues within the band. These have now been rescheduled together with a number of additional dates and are as follows:
12.08.22 CASTLETON Devil’s Arse
13.08.22 HOLMFIRTH Picturedrome

Livin’ My Best Life is the follow-up to Scott’s Nothing To Do Town EP. Produced by Will Weatherly, Matt Alderman, Jim Ed Norman, Curt Gibbs and Mark Holman, the new record delivers a personal set filled with the backroads, barstools and church pews that defined the Louisiana native’s youth. The singer/songwriter co-penned eight of the album’s 16 selections, whose credits boast an all-star lineup of writers like HARDY, Ashley Gorley and more. Notable highlights include the Top 30 and climbing, fiery heartbreak single ‘New Truck,’ unifying anthem ‘In Our Blood (feat. Jimmie Allen)’ and No. 1 hit ‘Nobody.’
The day-off, drink-in-hand country groove of the title-cut, released today, was penned by Thomas Rhett, Tyler Hubbard, Brian Kelley, and Corey Crowder. Scott adds his unmistakable draw to the laidback track that toasts a “work hard, play harder” ethos. The carefree song follows the recent debut of his heart-melting ballad, ‘Can’t Have Mine (Find You A Girl),’ which became an instant TikTok viral smash after Scott shared the chorus on the platform, making it an obvious last minute addition to the upcoming album. Nearly 50K fans have created videos using the ‘Can’t Have Mine (Find You A Girl)’ sound on TikTok.
The hitmaker is currently making his way across the country, previewing new music alongside fan favourites on his headlining ‘Livin’ My Best Life Tour,’ with direct support from Dylan Marlowe. Lia Rye – Heading For The Top
Lia Rye is an 18 year old South London based artist whose music dances on the borders of alternative pop and rock.
Showcasing mellow, reflective themes, Rye incorporates honest, relatable lyrics through a storytelling approach, captivating listeners with her colourful tales of characters and how they perceive the world around them.
Having studied at The Brit School and releasing her debut single at the young age of 15 years old, Rye found a stronger confidence in what she could achieve musically and accepted her unique artistry. Taking inspiration from the likes of Against The Current, Bring Me The Horizon and Lorde, Rye has established her exclusive sound with varied foundations.
Her latest single “Habits” tells the story of a self-centred person building their own reality to the detriment of others and eventually themselves. By the track’s conclusion, they accept that they’ll never be what others want them to be, defiantly yet sadly welcoming this realisation. The artist shares, “It’s sort of bittersweet as I learnt not to make excuses for unacceptable behaviour, but I had to ponder on the journey it took for me to gain that understanding.” Ultimately, “Habits” is about not caring what people think no matter whether you’re the villain or the hero.
Brooding guitars, fierce vocals and pounding drums create an overall determined and assured atmosphere. With an 80’s pop tinge shimmering a top crashing alt rock instrumentation, the musician has crafted a sound which is undeniably her own.
Off of her upcoming EP Fever Dream, the release acts as a form of catharsis, seeing the artist move on from the fear and longing she initially had when wanting to pursue music. Beyond her sound, Rye wishes to break the genre stereotypes for black artists and represent those who look like her, whilst sharing her love of alt music.
Having performed at prestigious venues across London, along with support from BBC Introducing, Lia Rye is set for an exciting and promising 2022 and it’s one you’ll want to be part of.
