BLUE VIOLET – Cinematic And Stirring
Offering one final glimpse into their debut album ‘Late Night Calls’ — set for release on 29 April 2022 — “Halo” is a climactic new cut that builds to a colossal conclusion.
Dealing with the anxiety of leaving your comfort zone and surrendering to something new, “Halo” stirs to life as a delicate and dynamic ballad before building into a theatrical and thumping expanse that blends tender vocal harmonies with wall-of-sound instrumentals.
Touching on a range of influences plucked from literature including the fabled river Styx from Greek mythology and Murakami’s surrealist novel ‘Hard Boiled Wonderland’ and even nods to the far-out fantasy of Jim Henson’s ‘Labyrinth’, “Halo” deftly blends the real with the surreal and boasts Sam and Sarah Gotley’s breadth as writers as much as instrumentalists
Of the track’s creation, the husband and wife duo explain: “Like ‘Labyrinth’, in the song it feels like there’s a woman lost in another place and a man who rules over it. In most of our writing there is a narrative that runs throughout and provides a metaphorical theme. In this case we really did have this surreal vision of an underworld in our heads when we wrote it, and we tried to make the music match by adding in things like key changes and a bridge that was completely different sonically to the rest of the song. But it is also figurative for how it feels to willingly surrender yourself to something new; something dark that takes you out of your comfort zone. People tend to shy away from moments like that in life, although they often provide us with extremely profound experiences.”
With its dramaturgic drum beats, driving guitars and arresting vocal delivery — tied together with an operatic string section — “Halo” reaches a dizzying and danger-tinged crescendo reminiscent of an old Victorian melodrama, or an ominous and long-forgotten black and white film.
The single also arrives with a suitably noir official video directed by Jarred Figgins and filmed in the Hellfire Caves in High Wycombe, where serendipitously some of the original ‘Labyrinth’ movie was also filmed.
Cinematic and stirring, “Halo” is a fourth and final glance behind the curtain at Blue Violet’s Rob Ellis (Anna Calvi, Marianne Faithful, PJ Harvey) produced debut LP, set for release via Me & My Records on 29 April 2022.
With the album’s earlier offerings boasting the band’s ability to navigate a range of diverse and delicate themes, Blue Violet’s songs have been likened to a range of musical greats, from the expansive compositions of shoegaze maestros Slowdive to the dusky mysteries of country-rock enigmas Mazzy Star. The band have also received airplay on BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq) and praise from the likes of Vinyl Chapters, who described last summer’s “White Beaches” as “a hypnotic gem of wistful pop that creeps out of its shell in a mesmerising way”.
With absorbing narratives that traverse genres, ‘Late Night Calls’ exemplifies Blue Violet’s expert abilities for crafting intricate songs with subtly-experimental sounds. Touching on themes of beauty and heartbreak, love and salvation, it marks the start of what promises to be a captivating new story in music.
As Sam and Sarah say: “It feels like this album is the start of something long and fruitful and that we’ve found out who we are and what we want to say.”
Featuring contributions from a cast of skilled collaborators including Rod Brakes (on lead guitar and bass duties) and Portishead’s Jim Barr, ‘Late Night Calls’ was recorded at Devon’s Middle Farm Studios over the course of a month in 2019 and finally arrives in the Spring of 2022.
With a full UK tour planned around the release and Summer festival appearances (including multiple sets at Glastonbury 2022), catch Blue Violet performing material from ‘Late Night Calls’ at the following live fixtures from later this month:

Naked Lungs – Attracting Attention
Irish DIY noise outfit Naked Lungs return with their pensive new single “Why Do People Change?”
Produced by Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox, the single comes on the heels of an exciting last few months for the enigmatic 4-piece, having initially built a wealth of excitement off the strength of just one caustic, self-produced live recording of a track called “Second Song”. Much of their attention has been built on feverish word of mouth, which has seen the band earn early organic acclaim at Irish press, as well as spots supporting the likes of Enola Gay, Bullet Girl, and The Love Buzz at the turn of the year.
Earlier this year the band shared their first official debut single “Database”, a muscular and propulsive introduction to the band that perfectly encapsulated the adrenaline-inducing intensity of their live performances. The track saw the band earn plaudits from press, radio, and fans alike, with multiple radio plays across BBC 6 Music and Radio 1 from the likes of Steve Lamacq and Jack Saunders, as well as attracting attention from The Needle Drop, Hot Press, Beats Per Minute and more.
Naked Lungs new single “Why Do People Change?” sees the band further expand on their inimitable pensive template. Built on a bed of driving bass and industrial dance infused rhythms, the track sees anxious discordant guitars develop from into gentle tinkering into blistering drones, meanwhile frontman Tom Brady’s vocals grow from a whisper into an almost shamanic outburst with him repeating the hypnotic question “Why Do People Change?”.
Naked Lungs is:
Tom Brady – Vocals
Andrew Connaughton – Guitar
Matthew Pyper – Drums
Ryan Mortell – Bass
Speaking on the single, the band says: “Pulling from the driving beats of underground Berlin Techno or Dublin’s (now demolished) Hangar Nightclub, “Why Do People Change?” asks a simple question that every person will face as they grow up. Is there an answer? Probably not.”
Naked Lungs have also been continuing their live onslaught with a number of sold out shows behind them this March – including a sold-out debut headline show in Dublin at The Workman’s Club. The band will also play The Great Escape in early May. Further live dates TBA.
If you’re lucky enough to have caught one of Naked Lungs early shows then these striking early offerings should be instantly recognisable as a consummate and direct snapshot of their mesmerising ability to fuse raw power and melody, and with further new music and live dates planned for 2022, if you’ve not heard them before there’s no better time to jump on board.
RUBY THE HATCHET – Grooving Off The Scale
In advance of the release of their new EP”Live at Earthquaker” this Friday, April 22, RUBY THE HATCHET have released a video clip for the song ‘Primitive Man’. This is the second track the psychedelic heavy rockers from New Jersey have revealed prior to their EP hitting the streets following the first video single ‘1000 Years’.
“Live at Earthquaker” features early organic and raw versions of two brand-new songs recorded entirely live at EarthQuaker Devices headquarters in Akron, Ohio during the band’s US tour with KADAVAR, with the cherry on top being the physical format debut of their raucous version of URIAH HEEP’s 70s anthem ‘Easy Livin’’. The EP’s two new songs will reappear in fully-produced recordings on the New Jersey riff-rockers‘ new studio album that has been announced for 2022.
Pre Order Here
‘Primitive Man’ is a mid-tempo bluesy grove-rocker, which features a pulsing and melodic line from Lake Muir, who fills out his bass tone with the Pyramids stereo flanger and the Westwood overdrive. Guitarist Johnny Scarps adds smooth rock riffing with sonic assistance from the Warden, Bit Commander, Swiss Things, and the Afterneath. Finally, organist Sean Hur frosts the groovy tune with layers of that classic 70s space-rock organ with a dash of Avalanche Run. It’s a headbanger for sure. Singer extraordinaire, Jillian Taylor, adds a touch of Avalanche Run and Afterneath to her powerful, blues-tinged vocals and harmonises them perfectly with drummer Owen Stewart.
Tracklist
1. 1000 Years
2. Primitive Man
3. Easy Livin’ (Uriah Heep cover)
With sultry, honey-smoked vocals, lush yet crisp guitars and spirit of rock ‘n roll organ heroics, it takes just a few seconds for luxuriant opening track ‘1000 Years’ from RUBY THE HATCHET‘s hot-blooded new EP to firmly sink its hooks into ears and hearts.
The scorching riff-masters emerged from a New Jersey basement in 2011 with a take on heavy psychedelic rock that stands apart from the endless procession of vintage-mining bands. The sensuous yet strong vocal signature of singer Jillian Taylor and Johnny Scarps’ deep-fried old school riffing combined with the RAINBOW and DEEP PURPLE-style organ flavours of keyboardist Sean Hur created an early buzz from the start.
Line-up
Jillian Taylor – vocals
Johnny Scarps – guitar
Lake Muir – bass
Owen Stewart – drums, vocals
Sean Hur – keyboards, organ
Even on their first release, the 2011 self-titled “Ruby the Hatchet” EP, the basic ingredients that built the foundation of the band’s appeal were there. Their occult-flavoured hard rock with mythical lyrics and a witches’ brew of classic guitar power spread from a local spark to an underground wildfire, which RUBY THE HATCHET further fueled via their self-released debut full-length “Ouroboros” (2012).
RUBY THE HATCHET‘s sophomore 2015 album, “Valley of the Snake” finally delivered the ever-evolving band into the ears and consciousness of the heavy music scene worldwide. After two years of heavy global touring which saw them hit the road with KADAVAR, BLACK MOUNTAIN, EARTHLESS, ARTHUR BROWN, UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS and THE SWORD, the quintet’s latest album, “Planetary Space Child”, was released in 2017 and widely greeted with universal praise as well as debuting on the Billboard Top Indie Albums Chart.
A captivating glimpse of great things to come, the unpolished, organic energy coursing through “Live at Earthquaker” sets the stage for RUBY THE HATCHET‘s much-anticipated return with both a new album and tours still ahead in 2022.

Lee Rogers – A Fighting Spirit
The second single from his upcoming new album, the romantic anthem ‘Everytime’ is about the love that Northern Irish singer-songwriter Lee Rogers has for his wife, Nikita.
“She is the person who helps fix my mistakes, never judges and soothes me back to the human I am supposed to be,” he explains. “I can’t count how many times she has painstakingly put me back together, held me when I was falling apart and reasoned with me when I wasn’t seeing reason in anything. I know that if you find that person in your life, who calms your storms and puts out the fires, who helps you be what you are meant to be, then you’ll get every word of this song.”
Based in Carrickfergus, just north of Belfast, the music made by Rogers sounds as resilient, gorgeous and scarred as his home turf looks. The sensual, resplendent songs contained on ‘Gameblood’, his long-awaited second album (his debut was in 2006), display an elegiac musical craftsmanship while showing off open-hearted, lyrical storytelling.
“My dad was a second generation settled Gypsy with black hair, swarthy skin and green eyes, like me,” he states. “He had gold hoop earrings and old Indian-inked tattoos. He was as hard as the road he walked on but had the softest heart for us and my mother, who he loved unconditionally. He had a fighting spirit, and that’s what I believe ‘Gameblood’ means and is where the album title comes from.”
On this third official release (he also issued an EP entitled ‘Dark Notions’ in late 2021), Rogers comes across as a manly yet tender outcast with an honest musical solidarity to fellow wounded exile-pioneers who have experienced similar rocky relationships and existential pain.
Recorded at Sycamore Studios with his regular band and produced by Gareth Dunlop (who also produced the recent EP), ‘Gameblood’ will be released on Zenith Café, a label based in Northern Ireland that is dedicated to promoting artists from that country. Rogers describes the album as “a visit to those hard places that most people put to the back of their psyche and build a wall around. Love, lust, life, death, addiction and lots of spirits and ghosts moving around holding it all together. This album is a truer reflection of myself, my stories, where I’ve been and where I hope I am now. It’s music for the grown-up mind, those folk who have seen a bit of life, and can relate to the songs. Though I am hoping some of the kids love the vibe too!”
Rogers admits that he wasn’t in the greatest of places when he started writing the album, while the subjects of its songs have themes hard to visit that he was at least able to harness and heal in the recording process. The result is a tender, raw yet sophisticated record reminiscent of classic folk albums such as John Martyn’s ‘Solid Air’, the soulful craft of Keb Mo’s ‘Blues Americana’ and the glistening baroque balladry of Tom Waits’ ‘Mule Variations’. Having worked as a tattoo artist for over a decade following the release of his debut album, the additional attention to human vulnerability and creative detail he has brought across from the skill set required in that industry has helped to set Rogers apart from most of his contemporaries.

One Armed Joey – Not Missing A Beat
This Wednesday just got a lot better because One Armed Joey just dropped a new music video.
The Sonoma County pop-punk trio is prepping the release of their debut album titled Happiness, To Me and their new single”Mirrors” is another shining example of what’s to come. Taking their cues from acts such as MXPX, Allister, and Green Day,
One Armed Joey offer up a refreshing take on late 90’s and early aughts pop-punk that has won them four Bohemian NorBay Music Awards for Best Punk Band. “Mirrors” asks the listener “what comes next?” and the band put together a music video for the track that is streaming now at Bearded Gentlemen Music. Along with the video, there is a lengthy interview that digs into the new album and the band. Happiness, To Me is a roll the windows down, sing-along with your friend’s kind of album that is perfect in a summer setting that comes out on Friday, May 27th. Physical preorders are available now from Sell the Heart Records. “Mirrors” will be available on all digital platforms on Friday, April 22nd.
Tucked away just north of the Bay Area’s iconic punk scene is Sonoma County, where bands like Bracket, Tsunami Bomb, and many others blossomed in the 1990s. Arriving late to the party is One Armed Joey, who have been promoting the once-forgotten melodic punk of the area since 2014. Since then, the trio has played all over the state, self-released two EPs, won four Bohemian NorBay Music Awards for Best Punk Band, and have now recorded their first full-length album, Happiness, To Me, coming May 27th 2022 on Sell the Heart Records.
Album Credits:
Avery Okamura: Vocals, Guitar
Kevin Worden: Vocals, Bass
James Allen: Drums, Vocals
“Happiness, To Me is an album about finding joy in the inner-struggles that we face every day, and realizing that you can’t relate your own sense of well-being to anybody else. For us, we took our problems and anxieties and turned that into music, creating happiness out of turmoil. If we’re having a bad day, getting in a room and playing music together gives us the opportunity to reflect and say ‘Hey, today sucked, but we love playing these songs together, and that’s awesome.’”
The debut single, “Numbstruck”, pummels the listener with hard-hitting rhythms, driving counterpoint between guitar and bass, and an inner-battle between the selfless heart and the selfish mind (“Blinded by disbelief and selfishness; where’s my selflessness?”). The song describes a feeling of apathy brought on by an overabundance of negativity, and longing for grief over detachment (“I’m quite numb to disdain, though I prefer the rain”). Splitting up verses and choruses with melancholic and angular instrumentals gives the listener moments to catch a glimpse into the narrator’s conflicting emotions, all without missing a beat.
Dustin Lynch – Staying Power
BMG/Broken Bow Records star Dustin Lynch is making history with PLATINUM, six-week #1 collaboration “Thinking ‘Bout You (feat. MacKenzie Porter),” as it’s the longest-running Top 10 single at 27 weeks since the Billboard US Country Airplay chart launched in January 1990.
“Wow! Adding this stat to ‘Thinking ‘Bout You’ is so huge. It further validates what we all felt with this song, and it’s so rewarding to see it continue to connect with listeners,” shares Lynch.
Fast-surpassing his four-week #1 mark set by 2017’s “Small Town Boy,” the Lynch, Andy Albert, Hunter Phelps, and Will Weatherly co-write is Lynch’s eighth #1 at US Country radio overall – as well as his third career chart-topper as a songwriter – and gives Porter her first US #1 after four Canadian hits. In addition, “Thinking ‘Bout You” has racked up over 300 MILLION global on-demand streams to date.
Further making noise with his current swaying single “Party Mode” at US Country radio, the neon-buzzed track – also found on his fifth studio album BLUE IN THE SKY – scored his biggest add week and highest career debut. The rowdy inspiration behind his current 17-city US PARTY MODE TOUR, American Songwriter hails, “Every day is an adventure, and Dustin Lynch is living his best life,” as he heads back out this week for back-to-back shows in Pikeville, KY, and Washington, DC. Tombstones In Their Eyes – Finding Comfort
Psychedelic shoegazers Tombstones In Their Eyes are releasing their latest EP A Higher Place next Tuesday, April 26th… and it’s a doozy.
Adding more melody and even harmonies to their fuzzed out, reverb-heavy distortion, TITE (as their fans who want to abbreviate it – call them) adopt that authentic 80s/early 90s shoegaze vibe and inject modern production a la Paul Roessler (T.S.O.L., Josie Cotton, Richie Ramone) for music that has been hailed by Big Takeover (“mesmerizingly brooding and fuzzed-out ‘n’ fiery”), Luminous Dash (“a combination of Kyuss’ stoner rock that The Jesus & Mary Chain encountered at the time of Psychocandy while Spaceman 3 also came to say hello”), and Ghettoblaster (“a psychedelic opus from one track to the next”).
A Higher Place continues the reverb where their last album (2021’s Looking For A Light) left off. Still woolly, they took special care focusing on the melodic side of their creativity.
“I love singing, and now, instead of ten layers of fuzz guitar, it can be six layers of harmonies on some songs, although we still do a lot of fuzz guitar,” said mastermind John Treanor about this record.
There’s the acoustic guitar-laden, almost pop-esque intro track “I Know Why” that eventually explodes into the band’s signature fuzzed-out swirl. There’s the driving title track that adds flashes of 2000s indie rock to the band’s sound and features some of TITE’s most memorable guitar riffs and melodies to date. The six-and-a-half minute psychedelic “I’m Not Living In Fear” is also a highlight on the EP, showcasing the band creating a hypnotic drone that coalesces into choir-like layered background vocals. All of this is accompanied by a self-described “depressive’s mantra” that was written to help ease the anxiety and depression Treanor was feeling at the time. The EP closes with the meditative, slow-creeping “The River,” which was inspired by finding comfort in life despite hardship.
Five Finger Death Punch – Socking It To You

The lyric video release coincides with today’s on-sale date of their upcoming 2022 North American headlining tour presented by Live Nation, kicking off in Portland, Oregon on August 19th. EMBRACE – A Journey Of Love
Embrace have announced their eighth studio album How To Be A Person Like Other People will be released on 26 August 2022 on their own Mo’betta label through Townsend Music.
Produced by Richard McNamara, the new album is the follow-up to the band’s 2018 Top 5 album Love Is A Basic Need.
Talking about the album, Richard said “Whenever we put out a new album it’s always a really big deal to us, we put everything we have into it. We know that there’s something about what we do that people love, that they just don’t get from others bands. It’s like a pact, they want us to be intimate and personal and autobiographical, but they also want us to be confident and rousing and anthemic. It sounds like a contradiction, but I think when we’re at our best we somehow pull it off. I think in that sense this album is the most Embrace album we’ve ever made”.
How To Be A Person Like Other People is available to pre-order now from https://embrace.tmstor.es/
On the subject of the album title, Danny McNamara said “I met my wife nearly ten years ago now, we have an incredible daughter and another on the way, but the most loving thing she’s done for me over the years is to try to show me how to love, how to feel, how to be a person like other people. This album is about that journey, that story, and it’s the most joyous, most uplifting, most upbeat, most soulful thing we’ve ever done. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it”.
Meanwhile the band have announced tour dates in support of the new album, including their biggest London show in over 17 years at Brixton Academy on Friday 9th September, a venue the band last played in 2005.
Talking about the tour Danny McNamara said, “After being away for so long we can’t wait to get out there and play live again. Our last proper gigs were among the very last before lockdown, so it’s felt like an age. To be playing in the bigger places again is amazing too. Embrace has always been as much about the crowd as it is about the band so I’m sure it’s going to be epic!”
Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10am from www.gigsandtours.com.
