Dustbowl Revival –Â Sharing The Love
Imagine the most beautiful day of your life becoming the beginning of your deepest trauma.
That is what happened when Dustbowl Revival leader Z. Lupetin took his wife Taylor to hospital to give birth to their daughter July in early 2022. That experience, and the subsequent events, are what inspired Lupetin to complete âBe (For July)â, the most intimate and personal song by his group to date.
Lupetin explains that âone minute I was tearfully texting the grandparents across the country, “ITâS A GIRL!â, but the next thing I knew, our lives became a horror film wrapped up in an episode of House inside an outtake of The Twilight Zone.â
Immediately following the delivery of their healthy baby, Taylor began experiencing severe, undiagnosable symptoms and was rushed into emergency surgery. âAt first, the doctors had no idea what was happening, and in the process her kidneys completely shut down and blood began clotting everywhere,â Lupetin recalls. âThey couldnât transfuse her fast enough. Even in Cedars Sinai, one of the best hospitals on earth, I saw the fear and confusion on their faces. The situation was dire until they were able to stabilise her.â
On a ventilator at times over the following month and often unable to move or speak, an infection filled her lungs, with Lupetin told that he may need to start thinking about his wife not coming home. âWhen I sing the line âDidnât I bury your body, and write your epitaphâ, itâs hard for me not to picture that exact moment,â he says.
Taylor was eventually diagnosed with the extremely rare condition atypical hemolytic uremic disorder (aHUS), which affects about 400 people in the entire USA. The odds of childbirth activating the condition were a million-to-one. A life-saving medication was administered â and she responded. After an intense battle, she is winning.
âThis song is important to me,â continues Lupetin. âIt tries to tell the story of how we got here. I would go home after spending gruelling days at the hospital watching Taylor battle this sinister sickness, and when July fell asleep I would play this song over and over on our piano. It got me through. The chords comforted me. It is about the fear I was experiencing but more about all the hopes I had for my daughter and the time we could spend together as a family â if my wife came home to us.â
The verses eventually unfurling, Lupetin dreamed of his daughter becoming a great pianist, singing along to Billie Holiday. âI also thought about the place that is most special for Taylor and I, Yosemite National Park, and the last time we went, when we were still trying to bring our baby into being.â The recovering family returned there earlier this summer to shoot footage for the songâs VIDEOÂ .
Dustbowl Revival are all about pushing the boundaries of American roots music, specialising in uplifting folk-rock ballads that often tilt into joyful soul songs. Lupetin (who is also a playwright) has recently been taking the group in new directions, mixing in elements of theatre and creating songs that are lushly orchestrated and cinematic in feel.
Having emerged from an enforced touring hiatus, the always evolving group led by its founder members Lupetin, Josh Heffernan and Ulf Bjorlin recently welcomed a new wave of talent that includes co-lead singer Lashon Halley. The new line-up was introduced to UK fans last month on a tour that included two well received sets at the Cambridge Folk Festival.
A first single release entitled âLying To Myselfâ featuring the new members was released to coincide with the UK dates and can be heard HEREÂ .
Dustbowl Revival began in 2009 when Chicagoan Lupetin arrived in L.A. as an aspiring screenwriter. Swiftly disillusioned with his job in advertising, he placed an online ad seeking musicians who shared his love of Louis Armstrong, Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin and the brass bands of New Orleans, but who also wanted to write songs like Americana pioneers Wilco, Lucinda Williams and Bruce Springsteen.
The groupâs most recent album, âIs It You, Is It Meâ, was released in 2020 and saw them expanding beyond their already genre-defying style to incorporate everything from folk to funk to New Orleans swing and more. Infused with subtle pop sensibilities that enhanced their infectious sound, it earned plaudits from numerous UK publications and airplay on several BBC stations.
IRON SAVIOR – A Family Album
German power metal masters IRON SAVIOR have been active for a quarter of a century now. Consistency and high quality delivery have earned the band around Piet Sielck a large and loyal fanbase.
In 2017 Iron Savior started a special project: Their first five studio albums were no longer available at that time (but the band could not simply re-release them for legal reasons), so they decided to re-record some highlight tracks of the Noise Records years. The result, “Reforged – Riding On Fire”, was received positively throughout and made the fans ask for more.
The history of Iron Savior is full of highlights, and there are many more gems that were not selected for a re-recording at that time due to capacity reasons. Thus it quickly became clear: “Reforged” goes into the second round.
“This time we picked 23 songs, which is significantly more than the first “Reforged” part had”, says bandleader Piet Sielck. “The very positive response to “Reforged – Riding On Fire” made us consider a second part. Through direct fan feedback, we then also became aware of how many numbers were still slumbering there, which deserved to be suggested for a remake.”
The 23 tracks of the new double album “Reforged – Ironbound” represent a real bastion, both quantitatively and qualitatively. “I am very satisfied with the result,” Sielck states. “It’s always up to the fans out there to evaluate something like this, but in my opinion our second part of “Reforged” surpasses its predecessor. It was great fun to approach the songs again.” Piet adds with a smile: “I’m especially happy that both Jan and Piesel as well as Kai (Hansen) were able to record or sing their original parts. And with the guest solo by my godson Tim Hansen, the whole thing has somehow become a cross-generational family album.”
Also two less known, respectively even new songs found their way on “Reforged – Ironbound”: “Living On A Fault Line”, which was previously only released in Japan, falls into the first category. In addition, the Eurythmics hit “Sweet Dreams” has been included.
Of course, “Reforged – Ironbound” was again produced by Piet Sielck himself in his Powerhouse Studio.
EWAN MACFARLANEÂ – A Bit Edgy
Forged in the fires of a blazing bust-up, EWAN MACFARLANE returns with the incendiary new single: âWonât Stop Burninâ.Â
A cut thatâs as intensely fiery as it is darkly funny, the latest from the former Apollo 440 / Grim Northern Social frontman finds him recalling a coupleâs row to end them all.
Set on a hot September night as he and his wife Jo made their way to a Snuts gig in Glasgow, âWonât Stop Burninâ takes the listener inside the pressure-cooker climate of the confined car ride to the venue, as simmering tensions finally hit boiling point⊠As Ewan remembers:
âOne thing led to another, and we ended up having a massive barney. Taking none of my s**t, when the car stopped at the traffic lights outside the subway, she jumped out the car in the middle of the road, told me in no uncertain terms to go f**k myself, and to go to see The Snuts on my own. She then hopped onto the subway to make her way home. This is the story of that night.â
ââMilkâ is a concept album all about the same woman, my wife Jo. I suppose a modern take on a love album, with twists and turns. Itâs about all the highs and lows of love, lust and passion, and one that I believe many people will relate to. For me personally itâs the best piece of work Iâve done to date. Everything about this record just flowed from start to finish with regards to the process. Iâm very proud of the product.âÂ
Honest, humbling and often humorous songs that, like love, reveal more the better you get to know them; âMilkâ will be released on 28 October 2022, via Royale Stag Records.
âWhere âAlways Everlongâ was an ode to my heroes, like Springsteen, Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Bowie. The new album âMilkâ is a bit more edgy, and thereâs a lot more soul. Itâs very varied and unpredictable with some big changes in the way that some of the songs go.â reflects Ewan of the record. âThatâs my favourite thing about being a solo artist. I can do exactly what my mind and heart want to do.â
Currently on tour as a special guest to fellow Scottish rock trailblazers GUN, Ewan will then be joined by his full band for a headline tour of Scotland later this Autumn. Tickets for all headline shows are on-sale now and available HERE.

ARCHERS OF LOAF – Getting Energized
ARCHERS OF LOAF RELEASE ANIMATED VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE.
Last month the band announced Reason in Decline with a video for its lead single âIn The Surface Noise,â which Consequence called a âa sprawling, massive-sounding tuneâ that âfinds a smart balance between past and presentâ and SPIN praised as a âstrident, anthemic single.”
Archers of Loaf have released an animated video for their roaring new single âScreaming Undercover.â The song is the latest from their first new full-length studio album in 24 years, Reason in Decline, out October 21st via Merge Records.
ââScreaming Undercoverâ is definitely the heart of the new record,â says Eric Bachmann. âIt came out quickly and it was the first lyric I actually finished for this collection of songs. I felt good after it had been written because I finally knew the point of view from which I could write more Archers songs. It had an urgent frustration in it that expressed what we were all feeling towards what the pandemic had taken from us, as well as the anger I felt personally towards the Trump administration and its dysfunctional embrace of anti-intellectualism, which unfortunately still seems to be infecting the culture and political climate.â
Though Archers of Loaf have played a handful of reunion shows in the past couple of decades, the band is set to embark on their first tour in support of Reason in Decline this fall. The shows kick off November 29 in Baltimore and include stops in Philadelphia, Boston, Brooklyn, and Richmond before concluding in Asheville on December 4. Tickets are on sale now. All announced dates below with more to follow.
Archers of Loaf tour dates
Nov 29 â Ottobar â Baltimore, MD
Nov 30 â Underground Arts â Philadelphia, PA
Dec 1 â The Sinclair â Boston, MA
Dec 2 â Warsaw â Brooklyn, NY
Dec 3 â The Broadberry â Richmond, VA
Dec 4 â Grey Eagle â Asheville, NC
After some reunion shows in 2015 reignited the bandâs creative passion, Bachmann attempted to write new Archers material, but he just couldnât do it. For him, the voice and identity of the band was trapped in the past.
âFor Archers lyrics, songs, everything, I had to imagine I was this angry white curmudgeon college guy who hates capitalism and consumerism and has a broken heart,â he says. âHeâs bitter about relationships, so he makes fun of things to seem cool. As Iâve aged, Iâm far less like that anymore, but it is a part of my personality. I just wasnât excited about re-energizing it. I used that guy as a starting point to get myself out of the gate, but in the course of writing the actual songs, he eventually went away.â
Album Tracklist:
1. Human
2. Saturation and Light
3. Screaming Undercover
4. Mama Was a War Profiteer
5. Aimee
6. In the Surface Noise
7. Breaking Even
8. Misinformation Age
9. The Moment You End
10. War Is Wide Open
Unable to perform, tour, or earn, Bachmann had become the full-time stay-at-home parent of a toddler son, while his wife toiled as an ICU nurse. The change was profound. âIâm 51, Iâve been [writing and playing music] since I was 14,â he says. âIâve been doing it for a living since I was 22, thatâs 37 years. For the first time, when COVID happened, I couldnât do it. It was a massive psychological setback, to the point that I had to get help. I already had a problem with suicide ideation, constantly thinking about this shit. And Iâm not ashamed to say that. Thousands and thousands of people have the same problem. Anyway, all this got baked into the songs.â
The end result, Reason in Decline, is no nostalgic, low-impact reboot. When they emerged from North Carolinaâs â90s indie-punk incubator, the Archersâ hurtling, sly, gloriously dissonant roar was a mythologized touchstone of slacker-era refusal. But this new LP is an entirely different noise. In fact, itâs a startling revelation. Guitarists Eric Bachmann and Eric Johnson, once headstrong smartasses inciting a series of artful pileups on the bandâs four studio albums and EP, are now a fluidly complementary, sonically advanced unit. Notably, Johnsonâs signature trebly lines peal clearly above the din instead of struggling to be heard. Today, singer-songwriter Bachmannâs lyrics balance righteous wrath with a complex tangle of adult perspective. He still spits bile, but itâs less likely to concern scene politics, music trends, or shady record labels thwarting the dreams of a young rock band. Bachmann puts it bluntly: âWhat I really think about going back to the Archers and doing a new record is that the three other members of this band are awesome. Itâs not about responding to the past or whatever our bullshit legacy is. I just wanted to work with these guys because I knew the chemistry we had and that we still have. I knew that was rare.â

DAVEY HORNEÂ – A Lust For Life
Scottish songwriter and musician – DAVEY HORNE – has unveiled the official video for his new track âWelcome to the Futureâ.
Showcasing the full spectrum of his enviable abilities and marking a welcome return for the artist, he has now released a stunning video for the single. Filmed by Beezom Productions, the video sees aerial footage of the spectacular Scottish scenery fading into atmospheric live shots of Davey and his band at Tpot Studio in Perthshire.
Davey explains:
âThe video is all footage of us in the studio. The location and vibes at Tpot are absolutely incredible. The studio is an old schoolhouse situated up in the Hills in Perthshire, Scotland. We tracked the core of the track live with quite a few overdubs, so I wanted to try and capture all of this along with the energy on the day. Itâs quite a special place.âÂ
A song ultimately about escapism â making time to enjoy the now, whilst also maintaining an optimistic outlook for all the promises of the future â âWelcome to the Futureâ lets soaring, rootsy vocals do the talking as personal admissions are wrapped in psychedelic obfuscations.Â
A southern-rocking runaway train of swampy slide guitars, bluesy ballroom pianos and hammond organs getting the full hammer-and-tongs.
Davey adds:
âIn life we have our ups and downs and in the last few years Iâve had plenty – at times I definitely was going crazyâŠ. This song is all about trying to take my mind somewhere else. Take the listener and me to a whole other world. I make references to myself in the song but really it is about living life right now and what the future holds. The last lyric âthe people you love will always come back and grab you when you feel the strain, oh how I want you anywayâ. Life can be strenuous but I love being alive.â
Recorded at Tpot Studios in Perthshire Scotland, the track was written by Davey Horne, mastered by Pete Maher (U2, Echo & The Bunnymen) and engineered/mixed by Robin Evans.Â
After taking an extended break from music, Davey stepped back into the spotlight with the sublime seventies-styled piece âWelcome to the Futureâ along with âDiego & Mariaâ last week.
Influenced by classic songwriters such as Neil Young, Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan, Davey Horne is a singer-songwriter hailing from Fife, Scotland.
Building his sound around his three stand-out talents: his soaring voice, his virtuosic multi-instrumentalism and his innate ability to craft timeless songs; Horne quietly released his self-titled debut album in 2020 has since earned something of a reputation as an artistsâ artist. Receiving a personal request to work with Grammy-nominated producer Jonathan Wilson on his tours of the UK and Europe, Horne was also invited to tour the US, UK and Europe with American singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins. Elsewhere, artists such as Jim Sclavunos (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds/Grinderman) and Nyoh (Harry Styles) have sought-out his talents, while Davey has also shared stages with the likes of Miles Kaneand Paolo Nutini.Â
However, shortly after the release of his debut album, the dawning of the pandemic would also bring news that would shake Daveyâs whole life to its very core. Learning his wife, Natalie, had been diagnosed with breast cancer, his career in music was immediately put on the back-burner as his sole focus became his family. Yet no matter how dark the sky can get, it seems that storm clouds can still bring with them a silver lining. Learning to find therapy in music during those difficult times, Davey found solace in writing and playing, and soon began amassing a new catalogue of songs almost without realising.
STREAM ON ALL SERVICES HERE
Fast forward to 2022 and Natalie has made an inspiring recovery and Davey is now looking to the future with plans to begin performing once again, not to mention sharing some of that unreleased material with the public tooâŠ
The first of those spoils are the AA-side single: âWelcome to the Futureâ and âDiego & Mariaâ; two glorious, sun-drenched, classic rock tracks that see Davey Horne re-establish his path in music with some extraordinary music seemingly beamed from another era.
J-LINEÂ – An Energetic Blend
Electro-pop singer J-LINE releases his latest single âIf I Donât Have Youâ and itâs bound to get you dancing through the end of the summer!Â
With elements of 80âs synth-pop and modern dance music, âIf I Donât Have Youâ is an upbeat yet haunting track about the difficulty of letting go of an ex.
With memorable lines like âI sit and wait for you at a table set for twoâ and âI know I sound desperate but Iâm crazy and I canât forget about youâ, the track brilliantly captures that post-breakup feeling without falling into despair.Â
On the meaning behind the song, J-LINE describes it as âseeing your ex as an ethereal being/ghost that haunts you every minute of your life. As you walk downtown, as you sleep, when you feel the summer breeze on your face. Every second brings back a memory until you get to such a fragile emotional space youâre someone whoâs âhauntedâ. Itâs about that desperate attempt to reconcile, ignore all the issues in the relationship and plead with your ex to âcome backâ to you.âÂ
Similar to hits like Robinâs âDancing On My Ownâ, the song is a form of catharsis, allowing listeners to dance out their own feelings of loss and loneliness. âIf I Donât Have Youâ captures the best of what J-LINE offers: emotionally-complex dance music from a queer perspective with a retro yet modern twist.Â
Â
NYC-based LGBTQ recording artist J-LINE has garnered over 1 million streams, 2 million youtube views and fans all over the globe. With a synth electro-pop sound that mirrors the brightness of the late 80âs/early 90s, J-LINE makes the underground music scene feel alive again – with an electrifying twist.Â
Â
He is currently touring with his âDirty pop partyâ concert, where he performs alongside LGBTQ artists (including Myylo, Peppermint, and Dillon Burnside)Â in major US cities, highlighting what the diverse future of music looks and sounds like. His live set is an energetic blend of choreography, vocals and music that leave audiences electrified. USA Today, Teases and Dares and Essentially Pop are just a few of the outlets that have praised music from his latest efforts.Â
J-LINE will continue to release music throughout 2022 as well as dazzle crowds with his live show, including a recent breakout performance to a crowd of well-over 5000 people at the first-ever Montclair Pride.Â
Tysk Tysk Task  – Raw Power
Tysk Tysk Task is a Lowell-based indie grunge rock group featuring frontwoman Samantha Hartsel and drummer Danni Gannon. While often performing as a power-duo, their upcoming LP features Ellis Roundy on bass.
TTT has played all over New England and New York, with favorable reviews by the Boston Herald, Worcester Magazine, and Vanyaland to name a few.
This raw and sexy New England grunge outfit from Lowell, MA have their second single out right NOW, “Ocean Now” ahead of their album release 9/16.Â
Boston Hassle called the band “stripped down rock nâ roll,” think of a “raw and female-fronted version of Nirvana Unplugged,” with critic Two Thangs adding, “(Hartsel) has the…intestinal fortitude to give it 110% on the howls.”
Reinventing themselves as an angry grunge duo with throwback sounds that harken to their influences from 1990s Pacific Northwest acts like PJ Harvey and Jesus Lizard, TTT’s harsher sound is indeed reflective of palpably distressing times amid the pandemic.
TTT’s sophomore album “You’re Sorry More” will be released Sept. 16 on Cursa Records, produced by Roundy. The songs center around Hartsel’s divorce. While TTT’s summer release “Rosegold” shows the anger behind most songs on the LP, their recent release “Ocean Now” highlights the bands affinity of dynamics and willingness to take their music to a more vulnerable place. That willingness is what originally put the band on the map on “Everybody’s Worried About Us” with the delicate 60,000+ stream-ballad Lovers’ Covers, released just before the coronavirus lockdown in 2020.
TTT most notably won Lowell Folk Festival’s Battle of Bands this year.Â
We suggest you get over to their Facebook page and like them immediately… if not sooner.
