FRANK TURNER – Going The Xtra Mile
XTRA MILE RECORDINGSINDEPENDENT LABEL CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2023.
Always going that extra mile to defy expectations and support a roster that is closer than family, over the years the much-loved indie label has introduced us to world-conquering artists, cutting-edge acts, and countless cult classics.
From Million Dead to Mongol Horde, Beans on Toast to Berries, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! to Against Me!, Skinny Lister to Mull Historical Society, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls plus so many more, Xtra Mile has spent the last two decades nurturing some of alternative music’s finest finds.
And now, as they prepare to hit a major milestone, Xtra Mile Recordings is delighted to reveal plans for some timely celebrations, including a huge show at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, in honour of the occasion.
Taking over the historic London venue on 9th February, the Shepherd’s Bush show will feature a line up of Xtra Mile all-stars including Pet Needs, Berries and Guise (all of whom have released new studio albums via the label this year) plus compere Chris T-T; there will also be a very special headline performance from Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls. An exclusive set, Frank and co. will be playing his celebrated album ‘Tape Deck Heart’ in-full (which celebrates its own 10 year anniversary next year), alongside other songs from his extensive catalogue. Tickets will go on sale this Friday (16 Dec) – available here.
Something of a victory lap for artist and label alike, the show announcement today arrives with the news that Frank Turner will be re-signing to Xtra Mile Recordings for a brand new album due on the imprint in 2023.
A longstanding champion and friend of Xtra Mile since their very earliest days, Frank Turner says of his return to the label:
“My relationship with Xtra Mile stretches back to the very start, two decades unbroken now. After a happy decade licensing on to the world of the majors, I am ecstatic to have achieved the rare feat of completing that deal and even more so to be returning to being a fully independent artist. It’s a new chapter for me, and a homecoming. Onwards and upwards.”
With the London show falling within the War Child Brits Week, the label will be teaming-up with the charity to support their noble work.
Also taking the celebrations out across the country, Frank Turner will also be headlining another Xtra Mile 20th Anniversary bash at Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms on 25th February, with support from Guise, Tom Jenkins and Hannah Rose Platt. This gig is now sold-out, but standby for announcements of further anniversary shows to come…
Reflecting on an unprecedented 20 years in the industry and what we can expect for the future of the label, Xtra Mile Recordings founder Charlie Caplowe says:
“Back in 2003 I was handling the Indie PR for several acts including (Frank Turner’s previous band) Million Dead. We’d put our faith in them very early on and getting some favourable press coverage in key publications. However no record labels were biting. Frustrated by lack of progress and inability to move the band on to features and album reviews, I decided to start Xtra Mile Recordings in order to help in those areas. It was really only as short term as that at the beginning.
At least the first six or seven years XMR was very much a side project running alongside handling Press for bands and festivals. It was really when shows started to sell out and venues increase in size on each tour, plus Radio 1 picked up on Frank’s Long Live The Queen that suddenly we started to realise that the label could become more of the priority for us all.
Over the years the highlights have included Frank performing at the Olympics Opening Ceremony and selling out Wembley Arena; having Indie Chart hits, Gold selling albums, taking over whole stages at various festivals, witnessing people singing along to lyrics from albums released on XM in far flung countries and meeting our label managers in USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, Australia etc. Working closely as a team with our artists and putting faith in them from the earliest stages, releasing albums from international acts as well as homegrown artists.
Working in and learning about all aspects of the Record and Live Industries and realising there’s so much more to learn in an ever changing landscape. Keeping up yet remaining loyal to our roots and ethos. And it’s always still really cool to see our logo on albums that we release and our names in the thank you credits.
Coming up we’re excited about a new FT album, building on great debuts from new signings plus key releases from Skinny Lister, PET NEEDS, BERRIES, The Sleeping Souls and seeing what our brilliant artists do next.
XM20 – how did that happen!”

Standby for further news of other planned celebrations in due course…

Skinny Living – Positivity and Reflection
Wakefield indie-soul trio Skinny Living have announced the details of a headline show at Manchester’s Deaf Institute Music Hall on Sunday 23rd April 2023.
After kicking off 2022 by commencing sessions for their long-awaited debut album, Skinny Living went viral earlier this year with their homemade acoustic take on Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’, with the video racking up over 2 million views.
They also completed an acoustic tour of pubs across the north of England, culminating in an unforgettable hometown show, where over 1000 people turned up to their gig on the common outside Wakefield’s King’s Arms. Following a run of sold out dates this November, the band will also be performing at their annual Wakefield Christmas gig next week at Unity Hall on Saturday 17th December with support from the amazing Sonni Mills.
Tickets go on sale at 10am on Wednesday 14th December and will be available from www.gigsandtours.com
The uplifting indie-soul trio also unveiled their new single — and first slice of new music in over three years — “Who Likes” this Summer, a track that reflects the infectious energy and positive spirit the band are known for. Blending playful indie-pop rhythm with a joyous sonic atmosphere, frontman Ryan Johnston’s soulful, rapid-fire hook keeps that effervescent mood at a fever pitch. With bandmates Will Booth and Danny Hepworth keeping the track’s buoyant feel in full flow with their jangly acoustic guitars, ‘Who Likes’ was written by the three-piece and produced by Rich Cooper.
After forming back in 2014, Skinny Living have since gained a cult following worldwide, with singles “Why” and “Let Me In” gaining over 30 million streams. While Will Booth and Danny Hepworth met in their hometown of Wakefield, Ryan Johnston was born in Belfast to a Catholic mother from a Republican area and a Protestant father from the other side of town. The family moved to Bangor where Ryan was raised, before he later moved to England and met Will and Danny at an open mic night before forming the band.
Skinny Living’s story is one of struggle, troubling situations and relentless hard graft. It’s also one of synchronicity, chance meetings and the unflinching belief that their glorious indie-soul music will reach the audience it deserves. “Skinny Living is a term that describes the financial reality and lifestyle of the working class,” the band explain of their aptly fitting name. “Hard graft on a low income with a lust for life, passion for family and an optimistic attitude about the future.” Echoing Bill Withers, The Isley Brothers and Paolo Nutini, their songs shimmer with a timeless, gentle beauty, with exquisite vocal harmonies and a lyrical wisdom that inspires positivity and reflection in equal measure.

THE GOSPEL – Sweet Sweet Music
THE GOSPEL RELEASE SEASONAL COVER OF THE VELVET UNDERGROUND CLASSIC: “I FOUND A REASON”.
THE GOSPEL make their debut with a seasonal cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I Found A Reason”, via No Big Deal Music.
Sounding like a pre-Christmas gathering of Mark Lanegan, Spacemen 3 and The Polyphonic Spree, this gothic, gospel twist on the Lou Reed-penned classic may be short on traditional festive cheer, yet its lush and languorous arrangements are sure to thaw even the iciest of hearts.
Originally featured on The Velvet Underground’s fourth album, ‘Loaded’, here The Gospel transform the 1970 cut with their own cinematic stylistics, adding sweeping string sections, glistening shoegaze-tinted synthesisers, and rich multi-layered vocal harmonies. Guided by Jimmy Sweet’s earthy baritone, the results make for a transcendental interpretation of one of The Velvet’s most seminal and understated moments.
The band’s first official studio release, frontman Sweet says of their choice of cover: “It’s a modern cinematic synth take on the classic Velvet Underground song.”
Produced by Rex Whitehall and Luke Stidworthy, “I Found A Reason” was mixed and mastered by Jason Shaw (Cambodian Space Project).
A supergroup of sorts, The Gospel are a cinematic synth and percussion band featuring LA‘s own Jimmy Sweet (Hot Hot Heat), Danni McCormack (Mel from hit 90’s TV series ‘My Parents Are Aliens’), Charis Anderson (Curse Of Lono), Heather Bell (Nova Hawks), and Hazel Cotogno (Poussez Posse).
Infusing ornate arrangements with the vintage grittiness that oozes from the 1970s analogue synthesisers they use, their otherworldly music deftly traverses the void between Nick Cave and Goldfrapp.
Formed in the UK with Sweet now based in Manchester, The Gospel recently launched themselves onto the scene with a string of live dates.

With more than 30 years together as a band and over 12 million albums sold, four-time GRAMMY-nominated rock band Goo Goo Dolls released their 13thstudio album Chaos In Bloom earlier this year. As the first record of their career to be produced by front man John Rzeznik, Chaos in Bloom found the band continuing to evolve artistically as they have over the last four decades together. It’s an album of biting sarcasm, stadium-ready choruses, and the type of spear-sharp song-writing that’s led them to becoming one of the most influential alternative rock outfits of all time. Listen to the album HERE and check out the videos Yeah, I Like You” and “You Are The Answer”.
This year also saw their indelible smash hit “Iris” officially eclipse 1 billion streams on Spotify as well as being the BBC’s most streamed song from 1998.
Goo Goo Dolls recently finished a mammoth 70 date tour of the U.S and have just announced another outing for next summer. They partnered with the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation for the tour, a non-profit founded in 2002 by Ali and Joe Torre to provide healing and education services to youth who have been traumatized by exposure to violence including domestic violence, child abuse, teen dating abuse, and sexual assault to help break the cycle of violence. You can catch a solo acoustic performance from John Rzeznik from the iHeartRadio Theatre stage in Los Angeles on December 13th. The show will stream at 7pm PT/10pmET/3amGMT on YouTube.com/iHeartRadio.

LESS KILLJOY – Show Your True Colours
The Pink Grenade EP glistens with echoing vocal energy, dreamy synthesizers, grungy acoustic guitar and an obnoxious in your face 808 basslines and some overly aggressive electric guitars.
“alt-hop lo-fi shoegaze indie punk. Fuxk a genre”, she says. “I just try to find stories and beauty in everything. Photography and film inspire me just as much as music does.”
Raised on the music of Nirvana, No Doubt, Linkin Park, Kid Cudi Rihanna and Paramore, LESS KILLJOY always found inspiration in music of all kinds but the one thing that kept her coming back to her favorite artists was always the shared experience of an artist with their fans. “I can’t begin to count the number of times music has been my escape and my way of communicating. I truly don’t know any other way and if I can connect with even one person in a positive way I think I’ve won”.
You can expect an overload of honesty, self-help therapy songs on LESS KILLJOY’s freshmen EP. She shares the truth about growing up in the suburbs, losing friends, coping with depression, loneliness, bullying, all while living with secrets… like being in love with girls. Being an only child and living in a place where she felt like no one understood her definitely shaped LESS KILLJOY “the writer” and having nothing better to do than play guitar/drums/piano and go to concerts definitely made her into the energetic live performer she is today.
Unapologetically exploring themes of self-evaluation and acceptance, she says, “I want people that listen, to somehow feel like they’re being seen and accepted for exactly who they are. As an artist I’m trying to be fearless with what I share with the world. I don’t want to hide my true feelings about life and the world I live in. I want to be me on and off stage. Authenticity shouldn’t be a selling point in an artist bio… it should be a prerequisite for making music. We all have a voice inside us, the only way I can fail is to ignore that voice. I did that for too long.”
LESS KILLJOY hopes to build a community of people who feel safe around one another, despite their race, gender, sexuality, age, or socioeconomic status, her raw honesty and true passion for inclusivity makes her one to watch. Having already established a significant social media following, there's no doubt that LESS KILLJOY is set to have a very successful year off the back of her daring debut.

PERRY BLAKE – Eerie and Extravagant
PERRY BLAKE has unveiled new single “Death of a Society Girl”.
Irish electro-crooner PERRY BLAKE has unveiled new single “Death of a Society Girl”, the first bit of new music from the artist since 2020.
An ambient and atmospheric track that blends swirling electronics with gently babbling synths and Blake’s token trademark silky sleek vocals, the new track also features actor Paul McGann (Withnail & I, Doctor Who).
Showcasing his knack for creating swelling soundscapes that are eerie and extravagant all at once, the track also comes complete with two new remixes: the Inertia Remix, a buzzing deep house cut that tips Blake’s usual brand of melancholia on its head, and the Cinematic Remix by KomestiQ & Will Kelsey.
Born in County Sligo, North West Ireland, Perry Blake released his eponymous debut album in 1998 to massive critical acclaim across Europe. Dubbed “one of the best debut’s in ages” by Q Magazine, the record became a bestseller in France and established Blake as one of the most highly regarded singer-songwriters in Europe.
Forging his own style of delicate, downtempo music with melancholic style and a soft singing voice, Blake has seven studio albums under his belt including 1999’s ‘Still Life’ (containing contributions from Steve Jansen) and 2002’s ‘California’ (co-produced with Italian composer Marco Sabiu and featuring Dickon Hinchliffe of Tindersticks and ex-Prefab Sprout drummer Neil Conti).
STREAM / BUY HERE
Citing the likes of Leonard Cohen, David Sylvian, Scott Walker and Nick Drake as musical influences, Blake’s music has been used to soundtrack two french films ‘Presque rien’ and ‘Trois Petites Filles’ and he has collaborated with the likes of Françoise Hardy and Émilie Simon.
His music has been praised by Uncut, The Sunday Times, Q Magazine and more, with Hot Press praising his 2019 LP ‘Songs of Praise’ as “a resilient rebirth”.
