GOOD BISON – Trust Yourself…
GOOD BISON Can’t Quit The Ghost On New Single “Can’t Waste This High”.
“After being driven off the road by the ghost, running through the dark desert and stumbling upon a convenience store in the middle of nowhere, our protagonist finds a secluded beach with a fire already burning. Although he knows the ghost cannot be far behind, he simply can’t resist the call of the flames and the pounding of the bass. Dancing, drinking, and blinded by lights, he fails to notice the eerie orange glow creeping into the edges of the scene.”
So sets the scene for indie-rocker GOOD BISON’s grand return with his synth-soaked brand new track “Can’t Waste This High.” It’s the first single off of his upcoming EP Ghost on Mulholland which is set for release independently on February 21, 2023. Following the storyline on a self-penned short story, the song (and the EP as a whole) is an R.L. Stine / Goosebumps-inspired narrative of the protagonist’s flight from a ghost who has followed him all his life.
Featuring a mixture of live instrumentation and electronic elements, “Can’t Waste This High” was written and recorded in Miami by Good Bison brainchild Pablo Alvarez and Abraham Mendez (Abes), with George Spits handling additional production, mixing and mastering, and Agustin Mas on lead guitar. The repetitive and simple lyrics are a desperate attempt to escape the powerful ghost’s looming presence via immersion in utter bliss, even when it’s fleeting.
“Abes and I wrote ‘Can’t Waste This High,’ along with the rest of the EP, over Thanksgiving break in Miami last year. This song was built entirely around the bass riff, and has probably the least amount of lyrics of any Good Bison song ever,” says Alvarez. It was originally meant to be an interlude, but once we brought George Spits into the mix we decided it needed to be more. I always knew I didn’t want to write a verse for the song because everything that needed to be said was already being communicated by the music.”

On Ghost on Mulholland, Good Bison takes his sun-soaked indie rock into more serious, sometimes slower directions to match the ghost story at play. However, he still maintains the signature combo of Beck’s Odelay, Weezer’s The Blue Album, and his unique, fast paced hip-hop delivery that’s previously brought him acclaim.
The EP kicks off with “10 Mins Away,” a meditation on the pains of dealing with insecurities and battling through them, tempered by guitar solos and hooks to bring levity and excitement. “Better Lies” deals with the anguish of denying one’s internal pain (“These arguments inside my head they could be televised. No worries, I’m all good, my smile is one of my better lies”). The latin influenced “Haunting” oozes abandon with eerie gusts of wind, sparse guitar, and sudden, disquieting synth swells that situate the listener directly in the protagonist’s shoes. This is punctuated by a latin jam breakdown, featuring Pablo singing in Spanish for the first time on the EP, truly embracing his Colombian heritage. The final, contemplative track “I’m Tired of Waiting Come On Home” reflects the protagonist’s exhaustion, while also exuding a sense of comfort. Here, the haunting seemingly ends, allowing space for reflection with a relaxing guitar riff.

“Abes and I have been working on music together since before Good Bison, and he also produced ‘Wavy,’ ‘Why’d Ya Leave,’ and ‘Nowhere To Go.’ After releasing Scattered Storms in 2021, the two of us began planning an EP, but we decided to hold off until we could be in the studio together,” says Alvarez. “Most of our collaborations until now had been long distance, and we wanted to capture the magic we feel when we’re jamming together in the same room. Towards the end of last year, I planned a trip to Miami, and basically lived at Abes’ house for seven days while we wrote these songs. Early on, the image of a ghost on the beach attached itself to the music in my mind and refused to let go. I already knew the record was meant to be a journey, so I started writing a ghost story that mirrored the EP track by track. Once I had the plot mapped out, I worked with Estefania Krol (the director of KRÖLHAUS) to bring the ghost to life.”
“People have a tendency to be extremely hard on themselves, myself included. We criticize, judge, and attack ourselves without reservation. We celebrate the success of others and ignore our own wins,” Alvarez concludes about the themes in his new music. “[We] chastise our shortcomings and belittle our hardships. And I don’t think that’s okay, so I’ve been trying to be nicer while still holding myself accountable. There is no right path. Trust yourself. You’re doing great, even when you’re forced off the road by a ghost only you can see.”

BLANCMANGE – Feel The Groove
BLANCMANGE PLOT EXTENSIVE AUTUMN TOUR
Following the release of their new album Private View – BLANCMANGE – will be embarking on an extensive nationwide tour.
Within myself there are no limits"
Neil Arthur
Kicking off on 1 October with dates running through to a London Assembly Hall appearance on 10 December, the shows will see the electronic icons joined by special guests including Stephen Mallinder, Oblong, Rodney Cromwell and Alice Hubble – full details are outlined below.
Blancmange also shared one of the album’s many highlights, ‘Reduced Voltage’. With a cosmic feel and motorik drive, the song features David Rhodes’ guitar unfurling in waves of immersive tones alongside subtle electronics.
As Neil Arthur explains:
“I wanted a track driven by a singular minimal beat occasionally shot through with lyrical phrases. They’re thoughts, hints of an internal dialogue. Feel the groove, feel the pain.” before going on to say, “Me and Benge stripped away some of the original layers detail to make the track groove. Increasing the impact by reducing the content.”
The new single is accompanied by a remix from long-time co-conspirator, John Grant who enthuses:
“I have loved Blancmange for close to four decades, so it’s such an honour to be asked to remix a track off the new record. It was a blast and it’s my first. Hope you enjoy.”
Across the new album, ‘Private View‘, there’s a deft marriage of futuristic electronic sounds, Arthur’s unmistakable vocal hooks, and songs that veer from buoyant and joyful to dark and brooding. Benge returns as a key collaborator, and David Rhodes (Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Scott Walker) returns as the guitarist, having previously performed with the band on 1982’s debut Happy Families (as well as several other Blancmange albums)
In their post-punk early days, Blancmange made tape loops and experimental sounds with kitchen utensils, before developing into one of the definitive chart-topping British electronic pop acts. Since reforming in 2011 (Luscombe had to leave shortly after for health reasons) Arthur has harnessed a duality of experimentation and seamless pop melody to release a staggering 10 albums in the last decade. “I don’t know whether I’m on a roll but I feel something in me has been released,” he says. “I used to hold back and I didn’t trust myself. While I’m still full of self-doubt I’m now quite comfortable with it. This is it. We’ve only got one time around the block, so make the most of it.”
The past is used as a trigger to create new ideas and build fresh momentum, not as somewhere to linger. “A lot of people are frightened of the future and are quite happy to have a repeat of something that was done before,” he says. “But it’s just not for me. Looking forward you’ve got a hell of a world to try and navigate through at the moment. We’re all moving forward – so we’ve got to try and find some answers.”

Private View is a record that manages to capture an artist who is potently in the moment when it comes to creating new work, while also being able to draw on 40 years’ worth of knowledge, experience and built-in intuition. “I’m really lucky to be able to make the music completely on my own terms,” Arthur says. “Within myself there are no limits, there’s a massive palette inside and I will try anything.”

ASHLEY COOKE – Shifting The Gears
ASHLEY COOKE REFLECTS ON WHIRLWIND 2022 WITH “IT’S BEEN A YEAR”
Rising country artist Ashley Cooke closes out her breakthrough year with a surprise drop of “it’s been a year,” out everywhere now. Arriving just before year’s end, “it’s been a year” serves as a sentimental rewind on her unprecedented 2022.
Out today with a special video recap, the wistful ballad penned by Cooke, Brett Tyler, and Will Weatherly reflects on the dedication Cooke has put towards her craft – leading to a whole new level of success – with the consequence of time flashing before her eyes. “It’s been three hundred sixty-five of record lows and record highs / Loving and losing, fun and confusing, praying and shifting gears / For the minute you got, it’s probably a lot, more than you wanna hear / So all I’ll say is, ‘it’s been a year,’”
Cooke confesses.
“This year has been nothing short of a whirlwind. I inked my first deals, played bucket list stages, went on four major tours and a country-wide radio tour, met thousands of new people and even a few of my heroes, fell in and out of love and spent more nights sleeping on a van bench than in my bed,” shares Cooke. “It held some good, some bad, and some of the greatest moments of my life so far – and I wouldn’t trade a single minute of the last 365 days. Thank you all for being on this journey with me and cheers to many more.”
As her packed touring schedule comes to a close for the year, Cooke gears up to visit her UK fans for the first time to play the Spotlight Stage at the C2C: Country to Country music festival in London (March 10th) and Glasgow (March 11th). For tickets and additional information, visit: https://c2c-countrytocountry.com/.
Cooke kicked off her 2022 being tapped as Spotify’s Hot Country Artist to Watch before signing her record deal with Big Loud / Back Blocks Music in March. After making her debut at US country radio with her “romantic hit” (Good Morning America) “Never Til Now” with Brett Young in May, the “country music breakout star” (CMT) made her national television debut on ABC’s The Bachelorette this summer, kick-starting the upward trajectory of “Never Til Now” at terrestrial radio. Tours with Young, Cole Swindell, and Jordan Davis filled out Cooke’s calendar with over 100 shows, while notching career milestones with debuts at the Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium.
“it’s been a year” serves as the latest instalment of new music from the powerhouse female songstress, who delivered fans “getting into” and “back in the saddle” this summer, before dropping dual releases “running back” and “dirt on ’em” last month. Heading into 2023 with momentum like never before and more new music on the way, Cooke is just getting started.

DEAD LEAF ECHO – Hacienda Primed
Brooklyn band – DEAD LEAF ECHO – are pleased to unveil the official video for their new single: “Boo”.
Part-inspired by the seminal Madchester movement of the late 80s and 90s, the track is now accompanied by suitably vintage-styled visuals. Directed by New Visions’ Dylan Brannigan, the “Boo” music video arrives like a lost cut from the Granada music show, So It Goes… but with a supernatural twist.
Speaking about the concepts behind the video, L.G. Galleon of Dead Leaf Echo explains:
“The Boo video intensifies the viewer’s visions of paranoia and fear about losing a loved one as they are trapped within a television screen forever set to watch themselves on repeat.”

DEAD LEAF ECHO – NEW SINGLE: “BOO” – OUT NOW, VIA PAPER CUP MUSIC
STREAM ON ALL SERVICES HERE
An indie-dance anthem with a deliberately retro feel, the track is intended as a tribute to the late Denise Johnson (Primal Scream / New Order), the Mancunion powerhouse vocalist who blessed some of the greatest Madchester-era records with her inimitable character. Scratch beneath its Hacienda-primed sound though and you’ll find an altogether darker and paranoid lyrical substrata.
As L.G. Galleon reflects:
“Boo was written five years ago when I was pressed by my girlfriend at the time to write a joke “Manchester” song with a hook. It quickly morphed into a partial ode to Denise Johnson who passed away during the pandemic and also into a creepy Halloween song about surveillance, discovery and scaring your “Boo” with the truth about all your hidden secrets.”
“Boo” will be the title-track of a brand new EP from the Brooklyn collective confirmed for release on the PaperCup Music label (Drug Couple, UV-TV) early next year. A five track release, it will be released both digitally and on vinyl by Moon Sounds Records and will feature new artwork from V23’s Timothy O’Donnell (The Birthday Party, Pale Saints), Roy Burns III (Stiff Little Fingers, Sun Kil Moon), and Gary Prendergast (cutshapemake).
Around the release the band will be taking the new Dead Leaf Echo music out on the road in the states this Autumn. Catch them at these venues as follows:

IST IST – A Potent Rumble
IST IST RELEASE PHILOSOPHICAL, SYNTH-LAYERED SINGLE: “MARY IN THE BLACK AND WHITE ROOM”.
Before we wave adieu to 2022 – IST IST – pause for reflection with the philosophical: “Mary In The Black And White Room”.
A reminder of their keenly-anticipated third album ‘Protagonists’ (slated for Spring 2023 via Kind Violence Records), the track finds the band revealing one of its most cerebral, synth-driven moments.
With shades of classic OMD, The Cure and New Order, “Mary In The Black And White Room” effervesces in the darkness with its potent blend of layered synthesisers, darting basslines, and labyrinthine lyrical intrigue.
“Mary…” is inspired by a thought experiment proposed by the philosopher Frank Jackson that has since become known as ‘the knowledge argument’ (or ‘Mary’s room’). Hypothesising the work of a scientist called Mary, who exists in a black and white world where she has extensive access to physical descriptions of colour, but no actual human perceptual experience of colour; Jackson’s theory wonders whether Mary will gain new knowledge if she actually experiences seeing colour.
Speaking about the track, IST IST’s Adam Houghton says:
“Mary in the Black and White Room is about trying to figure out if experience trumps knowledge. See ‘the Knowledge Argument’ where the subject, Mary, exists in a black and white world but has extensive descriptions of colour, but you don’t know if she knows what they actually look like until exposed to it. Really interesting stuff.”
Absorbed by themes explored in Jackson’s theory of physicalism, IST IST create an unconventional love-song-of-sorts. As if reaching out from another dimension, frontman Adam Houghton delivers a cascade of cryptic couplets and non sequiturs in his rich baritone, looking to add colour to a world that could be so much more than monochrome.
The single arrives with an official lyric video created by Shaolin Pete, which elegantly reflects the themes explored in “Mary in the Black and White Room”. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/7gz0WAVnROo
“Mary…” swiftly follows the Mancunian post/punks’ insurgent comeback single “Stamp You Out” and the announcement of their upcoming new LP ‘Protagonists’, which will be released on 31 March 2023
An album all about new beginnings, with a nod to the trials and tribulations of love, tricky family relationships and the feeling of being trapped by the past, ‘Protagonists’ arrives as an attestation to a band sure of their own identity. Owing its title to songwriter Adam Houghton’s magpie-like method of writing, the album places prominent characters, fictional and non-fictional, into dystopian worlds with new and uncertain outcomes.
Speaking about the album Hougton explains:
“My process has always been taking inspiration from everything around me including but not limited to TV, Books, Movies, Newspaper, Articles on Wikipedia, Crime Documentaries etc. I then use these sources to craft fictitious stories around an imagined persona. The title ‘Protagonists” seemed to work with this method.”
Blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, while traversing a broader spectrum of genres and sounds than ever before, ‘Protagonists’ will provide plenty to pore-over for fans new and old. Recorded and mixed by Michael Whalley and IST IST at Milkshed Studios, the album was mastered by the legendary Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound (The National, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol).
To mark the release, IST IST will be playing a special hometown launch show for the new record at the Manchester Ritz in March next year, followed by a full headline tour of the UK and a set at Whitby’s Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival in April. Dates and details below:

OUT 31 MARCH 2023, VIA KIND VIOLENCE RECORDS
Established in late 2014, IST IST have forged a formidable reputation on the back of uncompromisingly intense live shows and a fierce DIY work ethic. Releasing their debut album ‘Architecture’ in the midst of the pandemic on their own label Kind Violence Records, the LP found significant success in the indie, physical and vinyl charts.
Second album ‘The Art of Lying’ was released in November 2021, peaking at number 87 in the UK Top 100 and firmly establishing the band as one of the leading lights of a new era for music born in Manchester. The release was followed by a ten-date UK tour including sold out shows in Manchester, London and Bristol, as well as a string of sell-out European dates too. The band will release their much-anticipated third album, ‘Protagonists’ in 2023.

When Jaime and Lily presented me with a character they had invented, Little Bee, and asked if I had any ideas and what we could do with the character – I said yes – and this project of children’s stories and songs was born. HIBOU – A Buoyant Bolster Of Hope
HIBOU REVEALS DREAMY NEW SINGLE: “NIGHT FELL”.
American multi-instrumentalist HIBOU is back with new single “Night Fell”, along with the announcement of a new EP ‘Arc’ (due 13 January 2023).
Floating through a breezy blend of gossamer vocals, twinkling instrumentals and lush textured melodies, “Night Fell” is a delicate and jangling track that paves the way for Hibou’s new EP ‘Arc’.
Born in Seattle and now based in Paris, ‘Arc’ is Hibou’s first release since his 2019 full-length LP ‘Halve’ and the new body of work sees the artist emerge from his lengthy silence and reel listeners right back into the glistening whirlwind of his sound
NEW SINGLE: “NIGHT FELL”
LISTEN ON: YOUTUBE || SPOTIFY || APPLE MUSIC
A delicate blend of lo-fi alt-pop, nostalgic shoegaze and diaphanous dream-pop, Peter Michel (aka Hibou) spent the summer writing the EP along the Canal de l’Ourcq, before recording in various apartments, bathrooms and rehearsal spaces in Paris. Engineered and produced by Michel himself, the multi-instrumentalist also performs vocals, guitar and bass on each track, with drums courtesy of Jase Ihler.
A dreamy and diverse project, ‘Arc’ melds together a rich amalgam of sounds: from the delicate and dazing “June” to the buzzing and buoyant “Already Forgotten” and from the eerie twanging guitars on “Devilry” to the stormy, seesawing soundscapes on “Upon The Clouds You Weep”.
Taking its name from “an electric arc between things, or arc lightning”, ‘Arc’ is both sentimental and stylish with its carefully composed melodies seeming to tap into long-forgotten, hazy memories from the past just as easily as it does bolster hope for the future.
