Emerging Bristol/Sydney based indie pop-rock band – Dande and The Lion – release their new single “Children of the Hour” out now.

“I was sitting in Centennial Park in Sydney waiting to be picked up. I’d just finished reading a play called ‘The Children’s Hour’ and that kicked off the songwriting process. My ride was late which allowed me to finish the entire song all in one go which was kind of cool.”

Blending breezy indie-rock with bouncy electropop, the band cite a range of influences from Wolf Alice and Metric, to Cannons and The Naked & Famous, all of which fed into the DNA of “Children of the Hour”. Produced by Xavier Dunn and mixed/mastered by Klaus Hill, the resultant track is a mesmeric cut that sees ardent intimacies erupt into explosive, danceable choruses. As Natassa adds:

“”Children of the Hour” centres around the push and pull within an intimate relationship: the idea of meeting someone who takes you completely off-guard and shakes up your world in a totally unexpected way. So much so that you start creating excuses to see them and thinking about a future with them. But despite all of those feelings it never quite matches up: for whatever reason you’re both just out of touch.”

Dande and The Lion are dual vocalists Natassa Zoe (guitar) and Abbey Gardner (synth), joined by Chris Gabriel (drums) and Nicholas Shea (bass). The Australian/UK indie pop-rock quartet have released an impressive string of singles to date including their most recent release “Harder to Breathe”, which gained national airplay in Australia and was featured by BBC Introducing in the UK.

Having amassed over 100,000 streams on Spotify and 200,000+ views on YouTube, previous releases “Cheap Choice” and “Higher Places” have also received high rotation on MTV. Earning a reputation for their artistic videos, “Cheap Choice” won Best Music Video at the London Film Awards, “Higher Places” gained a nomination for Best Music Video at Cannes Film Awards, and most recently “Harder to Breathe” (directed by the band’s own Natassa Zoe) was selected for the London Director Awards.

ODIN & BJØRN BERGE – Get Up And Dance

A contrasting mix of blues and rap that constantly flits between rhythmic club tracks and tripped/blissed out downtempo musings.

‘Hoohahs & Cat Calls’ is a beguiling collaboration between the successful Norwegian musicians Odin and Bjørn Berge. It sees the duo explore both their musicality and masculinity on a record that deals with universal themes such as sex, solitude and climate change.

Both state that the record came about because of their love of ‘pop’ in all its forms, while the juxtaposition of its myriad musical styles created a friction that became the driving force of the album from the very first minute they set foot in the studio. It’s a bit like Tom Waits and Kendrick Lamar trying to make new records at the same time.

The song ‘Bullet Dance’ – think Arcade Fire meets 10cc for a ‘murder’ on the dancefloor….no, really – has just been released as a single, the video for which Odin choreographed a series of dance moves for various scenarios. These develop after his hand is seen shaped into a pistol shooting downwards towards somebody’s feet while being filmed on TikTok. However, he explains that “my hand shoots bullets that actually compel all the protagonists to dance. I liked the duality of using a potentially problematic image to portray something positive, but that also leaves an open space for viewers to have their own thoughts and associations. Ultimately, I just want them up on their feet, dancing and thinking!”

Odin Steveland is a composer, producer, musician and lyricist who is best known for his ongoing tenure in the folk rock band Vamp (SITE), who are hugely successful in Norway and have several no 1 albums to their name. He has been a winner of the prestigious Spellemann Prize (Norwegian Grammy) as composer of the year and has worked on numerous film, TV and theatre productions as both a musician and producer. Bjørn Berge is a well established blues guitarist and vocalist. He has released fourteen solo albums since debuting in 1997 and won the Spellemann Prize (Norwegian Grammy) for Blues Album of the Year in 2001, the inaugural year of that category. Just for good measure, he won it in 2002 too. He has toured widely in Scandinavia, Benelux, UK and especially France, where he has always enjoyed acclaim. THE PAPER KITES + MARO Graced the re-furbished KOKO, LONDON and gave us a little taste of home…

Looking sweeter than a Pastel de nata and with a smile as warm as the Portugese summer sun, a hippie-esque Maro bounded onto the stage, guitar in hand.

Perhaps best known for representing Portugal (and coming ninth with Saudade Saudade) in last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, she is much more than a one hit wonder.

Genuinely surprised and gleeful with the positive reception from the Koko, she soon had the quickly expanding early crowd singing along with her choruses. Her gossamer soft, wispy vocals told stories of angst and anguish, over guitar playing with influences from classical and flamenco, as well as folk. She later joined the headliners on stage, with her voice blending effortlessly with the band.

With over a decade of playing together and five studio albums under their belt, Australian band, The Paper Kites are generally characterised as indie folk but their celestial soundscapes are so much more than that.

The Paper Kites gave us waves of layered loitered melodies, that could very easily be the soundtrack to a David Lynch tale of driving across undulating, seemingly never ending roads occasionally punctuated by lonely motels and the distant sound of mile-long trains rattling across tracks intersecting the desert landscape.

No doubt, the hot red sands of Australia match those of the American mid-West in remoteness and exhilarating melancholia. Indeed, last year they played a month-long residency in the gold rush, one horse town, Campbells Creek, Victoria, surely a location worthy of its own resident serial killer.

Having five members of the band, of whom four can play guitar, gives the music depth and allows for delicately woven detail floating over the tunes. The banjo, a criminally unused instrument in mainstream indie folk music, is deployed well by David Powys, in whose hands it takes the form of rhythm banjo rather than merely twangy finger picking.

Lead singer, Sam Bentley commented on the theatrical beauty of Koko. The refurbished yet faded glamour of this Mornington Crescent venue was befitting for a group whose soul wrenching fragility would have been wasted in the cold sterility of some other London venues.

One can only imagine how amazing they would sound in the open air of an event such as the Cambridge Folk Festival, as the big old sun sets and the stars came out.

Militarie Gun – A Blistering Assault

Los Angeles’ Militarie Gun share a thrilling new single in “Do It Faster,” which serves as the first taste of the band’s as-yet-unannounced forthcoming debut album.

Packed with buzzsaw guitars and an anthemic vocal take from vocalist Ian Shelton, the short and sweet immediacy of “Do It Faster” is accompanied by a video directed by Shelton and edited by fellow band member Will Acuña.

In the video, the band dons matching sweatsuits and performs on a spinning stage as their coach, played by Acuña, fittingly yells at the band to: do it faster.

Speaking about the song, Shelton states: “It is about my overall impatience with life. The agonising wait for things to materialise… so before resigning to do it myself, I’m imploring the world to just move faster.”

Following their heavily lauded first performances in the UK last year with Fiddlehead and an incendiary set fueled by stage invasions at Outbreak in Manchester, the band will take their energetic stage show to The George Tavern for a much-anticipated debut London headliner on May 9th.

“Do It Faster” follows last year’s All Roads Lead to the Gun (Deluxe), which Pitchfork described as “melodic post-hardcore done right” while Stereogum called their debut EP My Life Is Over “ferocious, hugely impressive.”

Formed in 2020, Militarie Gun is defined by the musical restlessness of vocalist Shelton. The band – whose lineup includes guitarists Nick Cogan and Acuña, drummer Vince Nguyen, and Waylon Trim – draw on a wide range of influences to make something that sounds combative yet accessible, and undeniably their own.

Militarie Gun’s songs are instantly memorable and uncategorizable. With echoes of the unhinged guitarwork of Born Against, the propulsive cadences of hip hop, the up-front bass of Fugazi – and most importantly, the hooks, Militarie Gun employs a melodic sensibility that is just as informed by the work of Robert Pollard as it is by Black Flag.

With the release of their latest EP ‘Midnight Driving’ fast approaching (out 3 March via Chugg Music), Melbourne four-piece TEENAGE DADS have today unveiled their latest single and the EP’s title track.

Nostalgic of late summer nights driving through the Australian suburbs, the band explain the trackwas written whilst “coming to an understanding that a relationship is on its way out. Maybe you don’t want it to end, maybe you do. Depends on which seat you’re in. Are you in the passenger seat begging to go for another drive? Or are you the driver ready to speed off into the night?”

“Midnight Driving” has been a favourite at the band’s live shows for a while now, with fans learning the lyrics from live recordings and flooding their social media posts with comments demanding a drop-date for the track.

Featuring recent singles “Hey, Diego!”, “Teddy” and “Exit Sign”, Teenage Dads’ upcoming ‘Midnight Driving’ EP also features two additional unreleased tracks that take a slight sonic detour from their distinctive upbeat, experimental sound and storylines, offering something new and electrifying for fans by taking a slower, softer and more synth-heavy route.

Uncovering a side of their sound that is a little older and a little wiser, yet just as catchy and adventurous, the band explain that the EP “… is about perspective. How things look from one point of view, and how they can change over time from another outlook. The songs feel like diary entries, documented internally, like conversations you have with yourself when you go Midnight Driving. A constant, internal form of therapy almost.”

VASS/KATSIONIS – An AI Masterpiece

The progressive metal project of Billy Vass and Bob Katsionis, based in Athens, Greece, is proud to announce their sophomore album with the title “Cynical Silence.”

The Digital and CD-Digipak release date is April 7th, 2023, via Symmetric Records.

The album artwork was created using the latest development in Artificial Intelligence technology: The band imported the entire album’s lyrical content into the OpenGPT chatbot, providing them with the proper prompt to use on Midjourney. The result was an image that resembles 100% the lyrical and musical concept of “Cynical Silence.”

CLIFTON 2.5 – has unveiled a radiant new single “Under Attack”.

The track is taken from what will be her debut EP release, ‘Outskirts of Nowhere’, due 14 April via Leafy Outlook.

A glistening alt-pop track that blends tender vocal harmonies with lush electronic textures, “Under Attack” arrives as Clifton 2.5’s debut original single, following the release of reworked covers of Bombay Bicycle Club’s “Always Like This” and Go West’s “King of Wishful Thinking” earlier this year.

Stemming from a memory Clifton 2.5 had of being at school and experiencing relationships for the first time, the artist explains:

“This song is about the idea of preserving part of yourself in a relationship, not letting everything go at once but keeping your mind separate from the demands of a relationship until you find someone who you can really trust.”

Spanning a wide range of both genre and influence, the EP includes “Crossed Lines”, a song about “how it feels to let love go” that was recorded using a half-broken electric organ found in the studio; “Are you singing to me?”, a retro-tinted cut about “standing in the audience watching someone sing and believ[ing] that their message is meant for you alone”; and the EP’s assured title-track “Outskirts of Nowhere”, a piece inspired by the acclaimed novel ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ and the first song Clifton 2.5 ever recorded.

Ahead of their UK headline tour this February – THE GULPS – have released a mind-warping official video for new single “Mirror Mirror” (out now, via Guindilla Records).

A contorted cut that arrives as a more-than-apt accompaniment to their shapeshifting indie-rock track, the video for “Mirror Mirror” is just like stepping through a hall of infinity mirrors and “explores the diverse ‘shards’ of human character” according to director Eilera Ellie.

Opening with a long take of frontman Javier in his own world, watching himself and his band perform on TV while the space around him remains still, silent and empty, he is soon discovered and dragged from this internal space back onto the stage of the outside world.

Recorded against the backdrop of London’s iconic Soho streets, Ellie adds:

“Many of us have a selection of alter-egos within us, putting various facets of our character on show when and where required. Similarly, within the video, scenes flicker between each band member ‘lost’ within their internal worlds, and being out on show for all to see. Each time they are in search of their one true self, until the two universes merge together.”

Dropping like a disintegrating disco ball hanging by its final thread, the track itself is similarly changeable as it swings between the slick indie stylistics of The Strokes in one moment to the zaniness of The Lemon Twigs another, all while doggedly throwing-off the straight-jacket of convention at every given opportunity.

Laced with laissez-faire lyrics that take their cues from the carefree class of the beatnik generation, “Mirror Mirror” finds The Gulps inspired by one of literature’s most liberating minds, Jack Kerouac, and fantasising about living a life less-ordinary.

As lead singer Javier Sola explains of the track:

“It’s a fantasy poetry of a normal day. Influenced by Kerouac’s book, On the Road, and its carefree attitude and sense of adventure. Trying to make the listeners feel reflected with the lyrics, looking at the mirror and feeling they’re part of the hedonism of just another day.”

The new video arrives as The Gulps prepare to get ‘On The Road’ themselves for a stretch of UK Tour Dates kicking off next week.. Taking in headline dates in London, Leeds, Glasgow and Manchester, the band also warmed up for the tour with a support slot with Trampolene in Cardiff for Independent Venue Week. The latest run of dates follows rave-received support slots with live-circuit staples such as Ash, Cast, Skinner Brothers, Carl Barat and Keir last year and directly follows a SOLD OUT national tour of Spain, which garnered much attention from national press. “Mirror Mirror” quickly follows the 2022 hit “Candy”, with The Gulps already earning key support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 and Radio X at radio, and high praise from tastemakers such as NME, Clash and Louder Than War. Released via the band’s own Guindilla records, the quintet also recently signed a publishing deal with Mike Smith and Downtown Music.

Hailing from all corners of Europe and the Middle East, The Gulps are: frontman Javier Sola(Vox) and guitarist Juan Carlos Ruiz (both from a small town in La Rioja, Spain), bassist Simon Mouchard (from Nantes, France), rhythm guitarist Francesco Antonio Buffone(from Calabria in southern Italy) and drummer Raoul Khayat (from Beirut, Lebanon).

Currently based in Camden, The Gulps’ notorious live shows led to them becoming the last signing of the legendary Steve Strange to X Ray Touring, before his death. They are also currently managed by Creation Records legend Alan McGee (Oasis / Primal Scream).

In 2022 Gulps collaborated with Ibis Hotel Group in a marketing campaign run by Unilad and have recently had their last single “Candy” featured in Made In Chelsea. Last year they went to Los Angeles to record with Danny Saber of Black Grape.

Their first single of 2023, “Mirror Mirror”, was premiered by Chris Hawkins on BBC 6 Music, with further new music set to arrive later this year. The Gulps have also hit the road for a UK headline tour with dates in LEEDS, GLASGOW and the last of which is tonight (19th) in MANCHESTER.
