HENGE have been delighting audiences in the UK and Europe since they landed on Earth eight years ago. Their music – known as “Cosmic Dross” – escapes definition, but occupies a space between rave and prog rock that nobody knew existed – going ‘where no band has gone before’. Ultimately, HENGE spread a message of hope that leaves audiences feeling amused and uplifted in equal measures.

Their unique debut album “Attention Earth!” was released in 2018, followed by 2020’s “ExoKosm”, which earned media support from the likes of BBC 6 Music, PROG Magazine, Louder Than War and Buzz Magazine.

With a reputation for scintillating live performances, HENGE have won over audiences across the globe at festivals such as Glastonbury, Boomtown, Bluedot, Shambala, Beatherder, Fusion (DE), Down The Rabbit Hole (NL), Jungle Love (AU) and more – receiving the award for ‘Best Live Act’ at the Independent Festival Awards in the process.

Last month, HENGE returned with the new single “Get A Wriggle On”; a joyous, yo-yoing electro/prog banger that calls for action on Earth’s climate crisis. In a collaborative first, it sees the band teaming up with the UK environmental charity Music Declares Emergency, with proceeds from all purchases of the song going towards its work.

Penny Rich – Finding Freedom

‘If Everyone’s An Expert’, the debut album from Cardiff-based punk three-piece Penny Rich is set for release April 14th 2023.

Penny Rich were born from a shared passion for 90’s grunge and noise and a need for cathartic expression, their evocative melodies and introspective lyrics speaking to the insecurities inside all of us.

Since their formation in 2016, the band have been energising audiences across South Wales, sharing the stage with the likes of Death Cult Electric, Sœur and False Advertising, whilst tracks from their EPs Nomad and Revolving Door have been supported by the likes of BBC Radio Wales, with Adam Walton himself describing the band as ‘noisy and great’.

Hoping to build from the success of their previous two EPs comes their debut studio full-length ‘If Everyone’s An Expert…’, recorded with Andrew Sanders at Cardiff’s Kings Road Studio. As loud and sonically dynamic as it is thought-provoking, its first singles ‘Stolen Goods’ and ‘Last Meal’ both received glowing reviews and drew comparisons with IDLES and early Nirvana.

‘If Everyone’s An Expert…’ is the culmination of many years’ work. Between 2018 and 2021, Penny Rich set about writing new material with no particular end goal in mind. More cohesive and focused than their previous releases, it quickly became apparent that the new tunes were a definitive step away from what the band had put out previously. Having built up so much material in this same vein, putting it all together as an album felt like the logical conclusion.

The album offers a personal take on today’s polarised political climate, whilst also taking a deep dive into singer/guitarist Ant’s personal struggles coinciding with this turbulent time. With its heart-on-sleeve approach, ‘If Everyone’s An Expert…’ is intended as a raw, honest and self-critical take on both personal and wider societal issues. A full throttle assault from start to finish, the band fuse scuzzy guitars, adrenaline-fuelled drums, throat-busting vocals and vulnerable lyrics to give us 10 disdainful snapshots of modern life.

Ahead of the album’s release comes single ‘Spirals’, released April 7th. Discussing the meaning behind the track, the band explain: “‘Spirals’ is a song about finding futile solutions to life’s upward and downward spirals from the point of view of someone with underlying perfectionism and OCD. It explores the subconscious reflex of reaching for all-encompassing answers to your problems, be it a fad diet, a new routine, etc. Eventually, these solutions all ultimately fail, leaving you back at the bottom, at the start of the next spiral.

This song is very personal to Ant, who has long suffered with body dysmorphia stemming from underlying perfectionism and OCD. The song reflects the years of both physical and mental yo-yo’ing, leading to the conclusion that treating these underlying causes is the only way to eventually finding freedom from this never-ending cycle.”

MADS SAYCE – Letting Go Of The Past

Mads Sayce is a solo artist with an eclectic genre of releases, from dance to indie-pop and jazz.

A singer, violinist and dancer, she is a passionate producer with two of her singles featuring on BBC Radio Scotland last year, (one of them being the 2nd of her DJ collaborations).

Mads incorporates dance and movement into her songs, self choreographing the dance for her music videos. Living in Glasgow and Dundee, she began song-writing at 12 years old and released her first single when she was just 16. She has performed all over Scotland from a young age, representing Scotland nationally on violin.

Philadelphia industrial, post-punk outfit LOTUS THRONES has released released its second, full-length album, “The Heretic Souvenir,” with Disorder Recordings(CD/Digital) and Seeing Red Records (Vinyl).

Available for purchase and streaming everywhere, the progressive new record is the latest from prolific, multi-instrumentalist Heath Rave(ex-WOLVHAMMER, ex-ACROSS TUNDRAS) and takes listeners on a dark musical journey, weaving through genres with industrial synth and devastating riffs.

When Heath Rave first sat down started creating music solo as Lotus Thrones in late 2020 he had no set parameters or end goals. While his resume is firmly rooted in metal, the former Wolvhammer and Across Tundras drummer had long desired to make something that while still heavy and uncompromising, had a melodic sensibility and unflinching edge of experimentation. What came forth was a singular vision of riff-laden industrial post-punk splattered with elements of metal, goth and touches of noir jazz and electronic music.

The debut record “Lovers in Wartime” showcased his love bands like Killing Joke and Ministry at its bleaker moments while touching on the bombast of Sisters of Mercy and Samhain. Not only heavy, it plainly showed a level of sophistication in its stark, disparaging sounds and a proud vulnerability in its lyrical content. Touching on subjects like addiction, isolation and depression, Heath Rave opened up and bared truths about emotions we’ve all felt.

On his 4 seasonal follow up EP’s he released throughout 2021 and 2022 he distilled the sound of each one, taking chances and experimenting with post-metal, synthwave and doom all the while having a touch of himself throughout that was unmistakable. In 2022 he also expanded Lotus Thrones to a full live line up, including David Grossman (Rosetta, New Miserable Experience), Joshua Kost (Model Prisoner, New Miserable Experience), Mathew Geary (Cape of Bats) and Jason Dost (Krieg, Sunburster). Nothing short of prolific, the well is full and Lotus Thrones has more to come in the near future.

Tess Elena – On The Rise

Tess Elena, born and raised in New York City, is an independent artist who has catapulted her name into the limelight with her soulful, jazz-infused take on the indie pop, folk genres.

Her playful lyricism and bold flair have cemented her as a musical force within the singer songwriter community. Driven by her degree in Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies, her feminist roots inspired her music by everyday life as a woman and her personal experiences as she grows and moves through the world.

Her debut EP, Fire Escape, is a collection of songs written after returning to NYC from living abroad in Thailand and being thrown back into the big city hustle environment. The story behind these songs are a compilation of romantic relationships, sexual desires, and coming of age. Strong, introspective, and reminiscent, the EP oozes with soul, emulating raw emotion, and dancing between playful yet insightful and powerful yet vulnerable.

“Subway DMs” shows the often shamed sexual side to women in a consenting way. Written about meeting a cute guy on the subway and feeling the sexual tension, she speaks of the push and pull of wanting to be forward but also wanting the other person to make a move. This totally catchy and fun single is certain to be stuck in your head all day long, as we see the musician playing with different genres and instruments.

Then there is “Emotion Mommy,” a commentary on the unfair distribution of emotional labor in romantic partnerships and how to create clear healthy boundaries. Elena shares, “I didn’t want to be the emotional caretaker in my relationships. I wanted to capture how women in romantic relationships often carry an invisible weight of emotional labor that is often at an unfair level compared to their male partners. It started with this concept of “Emotion Mommy” that felt like it was a form of parenting in a way. I realized that it wasn’t fair to be performing all of the emotional labor in the relationship and that it should be an equal partnership. As I wrote the song, I started to think of lyrics that would demonstrate motherhood in a romantic relationship.” The empowering single enters with sultry vocals and moody instrumentation, suddenly picking up in the chorus, with jangly guitars and infectious harmonies creating a memorable listening experience.

Title-track “Fire Escape” shows how the songwriter’s safe space of creativity and growth of her childhood fire escape became a similar feeling in the romantic relationship she is in currently. Raw and honest, this sweet track peels back layers to the songwriter as she gives us a glimpse into her intimate feelings.

Lastly, “Heart Attack” is a coming of age heartbreak song that shows the vulnerability of a girl’s first love. The artist confides, “All of these songs together create a unified full picture of what my lived experience is as a woman today. I want to show what I believe the tapestry of being a woman can look like, with all the nuance and complexity of being a human being. It’s important for artists to demonstrate through song, what we believe we are allowed to be, especially as a woman.”

Having been commissioned by the United Nations to write and perform an original song for their Youth Assembly in 2017, Elena has since then gone to create a band and perform at venues all around NYC. Her highly-anticipated EP, Fire Escape, is certain to turn heads as we see Tess Elena on the rise.

Born from a musician’s desire to re-envelope their life in the heaviness that is metal and to refamiliarize with a conduit that could be considered detrimental amidst today’s destructive society, the gritty powerhouse that is Ontario, Canada hardcore/metal quartet TEETH emerged from the sludge of a foul generation.

TEETH comments on the single, “‘Hate Me’ is about watching the people around you – whether it’s your peers, family/loved ones, colleagues – self-destruct over petulant nonsense. Watching a marriage or friendship crumble over disagreements when both parties are too blinded by our inherent attraction to turmoil to see the pettiness of it all. It’s about how we – as humans – are so viscerally unwilling to budge in our cemented beliefs and beholden to our egos that we’d rather just let the house burn down to prove our point. I THINK THERE’S FIRE IN THESE WALLS.”

A Biblical Worship of Violence was recorded in the Fall of 2020 at Bell Tower Studios. Davis Maxwell and the band were responsible for producing and engineering the record while Lance Prenc handled mixing and mastering. This time around the band enlisted Heavy Sleeper Co to create the album artwork and layout.

DAVE FOSTER BAND – A Powerful Message

The Anglo-Dutch rock & pop act Dave Foster Band (DFB) have released a new single entitled ‘…Or You Steal Some’.

The second to be lifted from their upcoming new album, ‘Glimmer’, it begins with a plaintive piano melody before gradually opening out into a seven minute mini-epic replete with a string section.

Guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Dave Foster reveals that the music for the song “was largely influenced by ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ by Wings. I’ve always loved Paul McCartney’s energy and passion on his Wings stuff. Having the chance to record this with bassist Neil Fairclough in between his Queen + Adam Lambert duties was great. We’ve actually been friends since college.”

As for its lyrical message, vocalist Dinet Poortman explains that “I wasn’t in a happy place when I sat down with this beautiful piece of music that Dave had written, but the words and melody just poured out. The truth I was trying to escape from is told in this song, which carries the powerful message that you might be stronger than you think when things seem bleak. When we came to making the album, I wanted to record this last as it holds a special place in my heart and because I knew it would be an emotional experience. I am so proud of the result.”

The LP and CD formats of ‘Glimmer’ are out on 21st April, with the digital release following four weeks later. A cornucopia of musical delights, it will appeal not only to fans of guitar-based rock on several songs that balance dazzling technique with great restraint, but also to followers of crossover acts as varied as Air and The Anchoress on other piano-led tracks. Produced by Foster, featured guests include drummer Leon Parr (Steve Rothery Band), pianist Anthony Hindley and string arranger Stephen Boyce Buckley, as well as Fairclough.

Dave Foster Band (DFB) was founded in 2017, but actually has its origins in earlier collaborations between Foster and Poortman after they were introduced by a mutual friend, guitarist Steve Rothery of Marillion. Both had been members of previous groups that separately supported the prog behemoths, while Foster plays guitar in the Steve Rothery Band. He has also been a member of another leading UK prog act, Big Big Train, since 2020.

Given that Foster is based in the UK and Poortman the Netherlands, their first tentative steps were an experiment to see if they could work together effectively, but a number of co-written songs that appeared on Foster’s solo albums ‘Gravity’ (2011) and ‘Dreamless’ (2016) were solid proof that they had musical chemistry. Having formed DFB, they supported both Rothery and Marillion on European/UK tours while working on their debut album, ‘Nocebo’, which was released in 2019 and promoted with headlining dates throughout western Europe.

Discussing the making of ‘Glimmer’, Foster explains that “the pandemic stopped any further touring of ‘Nocebo’, but instead allowed us to embark on a really inspiring run of writing songs. We actually recorded the drums between lockdowns, which was frustrating but at least meant that we could let the songs mature. By the time we got round to recording again the songs had grown and developed into their final shape.”

Early 2020 had certainly provided Poortman with lyrical inspiration. “Britain was leaving the EU, the Covid pandemic was just around the corner and I was all at sea in my private life,” she notes. “Dave was sending me his pieces of music and I would play around with them and see what happened melodically and lyrically. Due to the lockdowns we literally had nothing else to do, but for me personally it was also great therapy as I was coming to terms with a marriage that had just ended. On the one hand it provided a lot of inspiration, but on the other made me realise that life is fragile and that people and relationships deserve to be cherished.”

The cover artwork for the LP and CD/digital formats of ‘Glimmer’ is a differently coloured image by photographer Neal Moran that Foster says “works perfectly with the idea of when things are hard and complicated there’s always a glimmer of light,” with Poortman adding that “this is the essence of the album title, the fact that there is always a little peek of ‘Glimmer’ in the corner of your eye waiting for you to acknowledge it and let it into your life. That’s what I did.”

‘Glimmer’ will be released via the English Electric Recordings label run by Big Big Train, with Gregory Spawton of BBT stating: “Since coming on board in 2020, Dave has proved a great addition to Big Big Train and we are delighted to be releasing ‘Glimmer’ through our label. The songwriting by Dave and Dinet throughout the album is impressive and we believe that it will appeal to rock music fans with a diverse array of tastes. We were therefore keen to sign them.”

Amping up to the April release of their electrified new album “Satanism”, Satan Takes A Holiday have released the crescendo-building new single, “The Sound I Like”. Following their latest single, the technicolour “All Nighter”, the Swedish rock stalwarts lean into their 60s influence while keeping the energy up in between monster choruses.

Fred Burman describes the new single: “The Sound I Like is an anthem for introverts. Borderline violently, groovy and shout-your-lungs-out-catchy in its chorus about the urge for silence and private space. As contradictory, yet on point as anything Satan Takes A Holiday.”

Satan Takes A Holiday will release their upcoming album “Satanism” in Spring 2023 on Swedish label Despotz. The Swedish stalwarts headed into the revered Studio Ingrid with Johan Gustafson (The Hives, Randy) and long-time collaborator Alexander Idfalk to reignite the flames behind their mix of rock’n’roll and 60’s garage with their love for dark contemporary pop.
