LEDFOOT – Get Some…

The song ‘High Hopes’ has had a lengthy history.

Written by Tim Scott McConnell (aka Ledfoot) and first recorded and released on his second album, ‘High Lonesome Sound’ (1987), it became better known when re-recorded for the eponymous 1990 debut album by his band The Havalinas, who toured with the likes of Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, Chris Isaak and Crowded House at that time.

Bruce Springsteen subsequently covered the song for an EP in the mid-90s before re-recording it for what became the first single and title track of a 2014 studio album that went to no. 1 in eleven territories, including both the UK and US. Springsteen recalled at the time that “I was working on a record of some of our best unreleased material from the past decade when Tom Morello [sitting in for Steve Van Zandt during the Australian leg of his Wrecking Ball Tour] suggested we ought to add ‘High Hopes’ to our live set. We worked it up in our Aussie rehearsals and Tom then proceeded to burn the house down with it. We re-cut it mid tour in Sydney.”

McConnell had relocated from the US to Norway in 1993 and began recording his own distinctive brand of Gothic Blues as Ledfoot in the mid ’00s, his thickly-strung 12 string acoustic guitar played with a brass slide plus a stomp box serving as raw accompaniment to his dark, blues-infused voice. He has released five solo albums to date and won the Spellemann Award (Norwegian Grammy) in the Blues category for two of them, including ‘Coffin Nails’, his current set released in late 2022. He has also released two acclaimed albums with Norwegian guitar legend Ronni Le Tekrø, including 2023’s ‘Limited Edition Lava Lamp’, which earned stunning UK reviews.

Ledfoot recently recorded a fabulous live version of ‘High Hopes’ for the Norwegian TV show NRK-Scenen with a band including Le Tekrø, which has been released as a single today. The song’s lyric is as relevant now as it was 35 years ago, with Ledfoot commenting: “‘Give me strength, give me peace, give a soul a night of fearless sleep’….some lyrics seem to mean more with each passing year.”

viisi – Riddled With Resentment

Good things come in fives. Dropping his first rough cut as a high school freshman when he was just fourteen, Matthew Borley, couldn’t have known that five years later he’d be touring Europe, playing packed-out shows in the South of France.

Initially sparked by his father during his teenage years, he was Introduced to select verses from ‘90s hip hop pioneers and most controversial rapper of his time, Eminem, Matthew was profoundly impacted by his connection to Hip Hops cutting and unapologetic persona.

Being put on the likes of Eminem, while most of Em’s lyrics were PG-13 at best, his father was careful to only show his son lines that connect at a deeper level from cuts like classic “Stan”. Not satisfied with only hearing bits and pieces, viisi did what any typical adolescent would do: he snuck out an old laptop and dove deep down the hip hop rabbit hole. Eminem led to Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre to Tupac. Tupac to Biggie. Soon enough, Matthew’s obsession provided an escape that quickly evolved and made way for viisi.

Based on the Finnish word for “five”, viisi represents past, present, and future. viisi returns to push the boundaries of what it means to be an artist in his ‘Liiminal’ series. Through his powerful and raw storytelling, his music transcends across unique and universal human experiences that have shaped him as an artist and individual. With a lyrical honesty and unwavering dedication to his craft, viisi is unafraid to delve into his personal experiences such as family struggles, fallouts with loved ones, career choices, failing, self-worth and more. Harry Stafford and Marco Butcher – An Infectious Spirit

Right, gather ’round you bunch of misfits and lovers of the ungodly raw. Here’s a tale that’s been thrumming through the back alleys of the music scene, straight outta Manchester’s murky depths and North Carolina’s bluesy swamps.

The legendary Harry Stafford, the spitfire frontman of that unhinged post-punk beast called Inca Babies, has teamed up with that US-born, Brazil-bred madman Marco Butcher, who plays the blues as if he’s guttin’ it alive.

These two outlaws have slung together an LP that’ll melt your face clean off, aptly christened ‘We Are The Perilous Men’, churned out by the renegades over at Black Lagoon Records.

To whet those insatiable appetites, these dudes dropped a monster of a single called ‘The Rules of the House’, a track so murky and vile it’d make the devil blush, followed by ‘Walk Among The Spectres’. Now this ain’t no lullaby – it’s a macabre dance with death, and the music vid? Shot in the damn near ancient Southern Cemetery, the kind of haunting place where you can practically feel the cold fingers of the departed brush against you. Victorian playground turned public park, this place invites the daring to – you guessed it – Walk among the damn Spectres.

Remember the aural carnage of their ‘Bone Architecture’ album from ’21? Well, these bad boys are back at it, shooting musical madness across the Atlantic, from North Carolina to Manchester, as if they’re possessed or something. They crafted this monster of an album in some sort of psychic fever dream.

“When we decided to release the album back in January, we had to decide on ten tracks (now eleven) out of a possible twenty. We agonised long and hard, but it was actually quite a satisfying endeavour because we were unaware just how many great tracks we had and that, if we kept this up, there must surely be another album in a couple of years, but that we’ll probably have to choose ten out of a possible forty tracks by then,” says Harry Stafford.

“This was also a moment we both realised that we had had such a great time working together on these tracks, which had now effortlessly merged into the great album, so we spent at least an hour feeling very pleased with ourselves.”

“I really like the fact the that we left behind all those rock music school rules and jumped into this new world of freedom and ideas, which could take us anywhere as long as we both are having a good time with it. So I guess I would say that the experimental part of it is my fave,” says Marco Butcher.

“I try to not overthink music as much as possible. For me, being able to play it and having fun with it is the paycheck already!’

As of today, if you’ve got the guts, grab ‘We Are The Perilous Men’ from all those rebellious platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp. Word on the street is, it’s dropping on pitch-black vinyl for the old souls and digitally for the kids. Dive in, if you dare.

“A song inspired by the type of story H.P. Lovecraft might write.” The band comments. “It deals with a horologist who using an old pocket watch can turn back time. He uses this to open portals to the past to assassinate certain people so he can alter the course of history. The Watchmaker is an inter time-dimensional assassin!”

Composer and singer-songwriter Jamie Irrepressible aka – THE IRREPRESSIBLES – has shared news of a new EP ‘Self Love & Acceptance’, and shared a brand-new track “Self Love”.

The EP is set for release on 2 October 2023, ahead of a special UK tour this Autumn which will see stops at some of the most beautiful churches and venues across the UK.

Head Cleaner – Chaos Is Coming

“The Extreme Sound Of Truth”, Head Cleaner’s follow-up to 2013’s “Of Worms and Men”, marks the fourth full-length from Greece’s long-reigning masters of grindcore since they formed in the early ’00s.

It showcases the classic, no holds barred grindcore sound that they’ve not only maintained but continually honed over the past 20 years.

Featuring 11 tracks in almost 25 minutes, Head Cleaner waste no time and remain persistent and ferocious throughout. Tracks like “Cold Machines” and “Mass Production Dream” are just two of the album’s most relentlessly devastating, featuring powerful, furious riffs and inhuman, rapid-fire blast beats, while tracks like “Not Like All Of You” and “For Tomorrow’s Lesson” show a more mid-paced stomp, containing intense grooves and crushing riffs while maintaining the same level of severity.

Hailing from Thessaloniki, Head Cleaner have been an important part of the city’s extreme underground scene for the last two decades.
They have eight official releases to their credit, including three full-length albums and two split albums with well-known bands from the local and European scene. Welsh alternative rock trio The Joy Formidable have released a brand new single entitled ‘The Hat’.

The second of three to appear ahead of a UK tour that commences later this month.

“I feel like your own inner reflections can take on a sensation like being in space, alone in the gravity of your own uncertainty, drifting and off balance but aware of how beautiful and extraordinary life is,” says singer Ritzy Bryan. “This new song has that sensation of being transported but also moving forward, a nod to the new aperiodic tile that never repeats and your own vow to ‘never make the same mistake twice’.”

Comprised of lead vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Bryan, bassist/vocalist Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matt Thomas, The Joy Formidable are originally from North Wales and currently split their time between there and Utah, “in the middle of nowhere” and the closest thing they could find in the USA to their home turf. Based in Belgium, Side-Line has been active since 1989 and is one of the most popular websites worldwide for electro/industrial music.
