yelworC – Gloomy Synths And Abrasive Beats
yelworC is an influential yet enigmatic German dark electro-industrial group originally formed in 1987 by Peter Devin and Dominik van Reich.
Consisting of gloomy synthesisers mixed with abrasive dance-beats, overlaid with distorted vocals and occasional audio samples, their music reflected themes of dark magic, religious rituals, death and violence from the off.
Having issued several early demo tapes, yelworC eventually released a debut album in 1992 and an EP the following year, but van Reich then left the band. Devin subsequently recorded two further albums alone in 2004 and 2007. Seventeen years on, Metropolis Records has just released ‘The Ghosts I Called’, a brand new and captivating collection recorded by Devin over a ten year period. It follows a set of four recent vinyl reissues on GH Records that revisits the group’s earliest years.

Alongside Sims in Rubikon are Josh Gruss (guitars,) Dave Raymond (guitars) Hugh Eaton (bass) and Doug Arsham (drums, vocals). Together, they have released the albums ‘The Hollow Men’ (2004), ‘American Dream Machine’ (2011), ‘Delta’ (2015) and ‘The Record’ (2019).
Tulipomania – A Signal Of Hope
Tulipomania presents ‘Shines On’, the latest animated audio-visual exploration from the Philadelphia-based art-rock duo in support of their latest album (their fifth to date) ‘Dreaming of Sleep’, released via Sursumcorda Records.
As the album’s third single, ‘Shines On’ continues the conceptual viewpoint of the album – embracing contradiction while inviting ambiguity. A light from long ago shines on in this paean to ambiguity, memory, and endurance.
Band members Tom Murray and Cheryl Gelover created, then modified and manipulated their original footage to produce this animated exploration of light and color. The final animation is composed of thousands of individual collages, augmented by bold swipes of pastel on the distressed and reconfigured surfaces of black paper.
“The song introduces ambiguity in its exploration of the energy of light. Who is the teller of the tale?” asks Cheryl Gelover. “We’re pretty pleased about that and we’re really happy with the way that the tuned, chorused background vocals resolved in the overall mix.”
Ever a signal of hope, guidance and fortitude, light appears here in many guises, from flashes of sunlight to the glow emitted by the pre-solid state digital age nixie tube numerical display and on everything reflected and refracted in it. Light scatters on images captured then collaged on torn paper fiber – illuminated again once filmed then viewed.
“Light from a great distance dances and reflects a memory of the past. Moving towards the future, carrying the past with it,” says Tom Murray. “We were able to embed a waltz-timed morse code message in the bridge of the song.”
Earlier, Tulipomania released the singles and accompanying videos for ‘Then and Only Then’, ‘You Had to Be There’ and a remix created by UK music legend Martyn Ware (Heaven 17, The Human League) and Charles Stooke, as featured on WIRE Magazine’s cover-mounted Wiretapper CD.
Over the years, Tulipomania’s music has been dubbed cult synth punks, glam-leaning, post-punk, art-rock and muscular chamber pop, but on this album, the duo was heavily immersed in electronic means of creation.
The new ‘Dreaming of Sleep’ album features cover artwork by Michael Speed, senior designer at Beggars Group London, and involves Executive Producer Howard Thompson, a record industry executive (Elektra, Island, Almo Sounds), renowned for discovering and working with such artists as Adam and the Ants, Billy Bragg, MC5, Mötorhead, PiL, Psychedelic Furs, Robyn Hitchcock, The Sugarcubes and Suicide, among others.
“The music and the animations of this album explore outrage, powerlessness and the knowing kind of sorrow that emerges from those states of mind – often in bursts of absurdity. Being aware of the ridiculous often feels like salvation,” says Cheryl Gelover.
Artistic, inventive and gorgeous, Tulipomania’s animated music videos have been featured in film festivals worldwide, with several showcasing their latest few videos as an official selection, including the Leeds International Film Festival (UK), StopTrik (Croatia, Poland), AniFilm (Czech Republic), Insomnia (Russia), Malatesta (Italy) and CutOut animation festival (Mexico), as well as earning an Honorable Mention at the Montreal International Animation Film Festival – Animaze and named as finalist af the Amarcort Film Festival in Fellini’s hometown.

Bert Hardy – Photojournalism in War and Peace
Bert Hardy: Photojournalism in War and Peace opens at The Photographers’ Gallery this spring,
from 23 February – 2 June 2024.
From his early career as a news and sports photographer, to serving combat cameraman and successful advertising entrepreneur, this retrospective of renowned photojournalist Bert Hardy (1913-1995, London, UK) shines a fresh light on his four decades long career.
Hardy is often associated with a nostalgic, monochrome vision of mid-century Britain – from
the Blitz spirit of 1940 to children playing in post-war city streets, and seaside scenes from the
1950s. Pulling together work from his archive and historical publications, this retrospective
reveals another perspective on a versatile, international and entrepreneurial image-maker.
Born into a working-class family in Blackfriars, Hardy was entirely self-taught and worked his
way up from lab assistant to become an influential press and documentary photographer. Well known for his work at Picture Post magazine, Hardy travelled extensively, covering news, social
issues and popular culture stories across the UK and internationally. His long-time collaborator,
Tom Hopkinson, Editor of Picture Post (1940-50) described Hardy as ‘The nearest to an all round cameraman I ever worked with. There were few assignments – except perhaps theatre
and ballet – on which I wouldn’t have wished to send him.’
‘Everywhere I look, and most of the time I look, I see photographs.’ – Bert Hardy
Known for his empathetic portrayal of everyday scenes of British life, Hardy’s work also
demonstrates a strong commitment to revealing social conditions and working class lives in
the post-war years. Hardy had a genuine interest in people’s lives and said ‘The ideal picture
tells something of the essence of life. It sums up emotion, it holds the feeling of movement
thereby implying the continuity of life.’
As well as historic material from his work at Britain’s leading photo-magazine of the time,
Picture Post, the exhibition includes photographs taken during his time in the Army Film and
Photographic Unit, including imagery from the London Blitz to the liberation of Bergen-Belsen
and war in Southeast Asia.
Bert Hardy: Photojournalism in War and Peace includes Hardy’s wide-ranging social
documentary work across many cities in mid-century Britain, including London, Liverpool,
Cardiff, Belfast, Tyneside and Glasgow. His travels across post-war Europe and images from
the many conflicts he reported on will also be on show. A rich selection of material from Hardy’s
archive, including press passes, correspondence, diaries, and original publications will be
displayed, alongside some of his lesser-known colour work.
Hard-working, resourceful and imaginative, Hardy was constantly taking and making
opportunities to build a remarkable photographic career as a photojournalist. Later in his
career, he worked as a commercial photographer, specialising in advertising and branding until
his retirement in 1965.
Bert Hardy: Photojournalism in War and Peace is organised with the generous support of The
Bert Hardy Estate, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Getty Images Hulton Archive and Cardiff
University. The exhibition is produced in collaboration with Dr Tom Allbeson, Senior Lecturer in
Media History, Cardiff University.
The Estate of Bert Hardy is represented by Print Sales at The Photographers’ Gallery. Hardy’s
work is available to buy from £1500 + VAT. All profits from Print Sales support The
Photographers’ Gallery programme.

Sky_A – Finding Inner Strength
Sky_A returns with his second single ‘Walker’, released today, January 26th 2024, taken from his upcoming debut album due later in the year.
The project name for writer and producer Sky Ainsbury, Sky_A expands on his palette of electronic, acoustic and progressive rock music with this track, to bring a darker edge to his intimate yet cinematic sound.
Sky has synaesthesia, and seeks to share with listeners his own experience of music as something deep and immersive, comprised of shapes, colours and textures. Working professionally as a filmmaker and motion graphics artist, he also brings a strong visual element to this project, with a focus on long-form storytelling and beautiful, hypnotic abstract visuals.
Describing the impact of his perception, and his work in visuals on his music, Sky explains: “This is world-building for me. There is a big story to be told. Each track is a scene, and as far as possible I have instruments representing characters. It’s my “Swan Lake”. I’ll shut my eyes and see these elements like a rolling landscape – sometimes it’s serene and beautific, and sometimes it’s like barbed wire and collapsed concrete buildings. That’s what I want a listener to see when they hear this.”
The follow up to August’s debut single ‘Spider Silk’, ‘Walker’ was self-performed and produced, with the addition of virtuoso drums by Adam Betts (Three Trapped Tigers, Squarepusher, Pulp) and additional production and mixing by Aneek Thapar (65daysofstatic, Rival Consoles). Lyrically it explores self-knowledge and finding inner strength.
When to celebrate, and when to keep the powder dry
When to medicate, and when to metamorphosise
About the inspiration for the song Sky_A says: “It’s an angry piece of music. Like, anti-imperial levels of anger. It’s about having been lied to, having participated in awful things on a huge scale, and becoming aware, resolving to undo the damage that has been done. It’s a bit like a war march, sonically. Built around the sound of my thumb on an unearthed guitar lead – a sound most musicians will recognise, barely musical – it has this feeling for me of molten rock, this tectonic movement, as this person is accepting their pain as a gift, of purposeful anger. I like it being called Walker, I hear the rhythm as a kind of limping gait, wounded but resolute. There’s a lot more to it than that – every song on the album is a scene, and the sounds are characters – which won’t make much sense out of context, but it comes at a decisive point, it’s the squaring up to the challenge ahead, it’s about seeing the horror and brutality in the world and not looking away.”

Charles Esten – A Beautiful Ride
Multi-talent Charles Esten has released his independent debut album, Love Ain’t Pretty (26 Jan).
Bob Harris, who played ‘Maybe I’m Alright’ off the album on his BBC Radio 2 show last night shared that “in addition to making such great music, he [Charles] is one of the great people of the world.” The episode is available to listen back here.
Esten, who will be returning to the UK in April for a headline run of shows, wrote all 14 songs on Love Ain’t Pretty, in tandem with hitmakers like Jon Nite, Eric Paslay, Gary Burr, Leslie Satcher, and more. The album explores life, love, and the passing of time through the lens of a travelled and tested everyman, who has never lost his innate sense of wonder, or his wide-open soul. Vividly detailed and filled with the emotional daring of a celebrated storyteller – both onscreen and onstage – Charles dives into wide-ranging themes of earth-shattering romance, big-picture reflection, and more.
Love Ain’t Pretty, produced by Marshall Altman (Frankie Ballard, Marc Broussard, Matt Nathanson) to sculpt a calm, controlled, and beautifully contoured sound, blending the forward momentum of Country Rock with Rootsy small-town charm, and a warm, soulful vocal, is a culmination of a lifetime of growth, and like its title suggests, it hasn’t always been pretty, but it has been a beautiful ride.
“The throughline of this album is right there in the title: ‘Love Ain’t Pretty,’” Esten shared with CMT.com. “Life can be hard, and there are moments when it can wear anyone down. In those times, you need strength and maybe a little more faith. So, there’s some real seriousness throughout.”
Making several anticipated albums of 2024 lists including The Tennessean, STEREOGUM, Men’s Journal, American Songwriter, Taste of Country, and Wide Open Country, Love Ain’t Pretty is stacking early notable features with GRAMMY.com, Parade, and Cowboys & Indians.

Stela Cole – A Musical Evolution
Despite a 2022 that saw Stela Cole hit the 1m monthly listener mark, 4x her social media following, and have her strongest streaming year to date.
Stela (real name Hollyn Shadinger) felt mentally and emotionally apart from herself. Creatively unfulfilled, overwhelmed, and uninspired by social media.
Stela Cole used 2023 to address her mental health, exit her label deal, black out her profiles, delete the apps, and trade doom scrolling for her guitar, the studio, and her favorite records.
Working closely with a core group of collaborators, Stela has meticulously crafted a sonic world inspired by Fleetwood Mac, The Mama’s and Papa’s, Tame Impala, The Eagles, Arctic Monkeys and more. The result is more than a musical evolution; it’s a rebirth.
Partnering with Award-Winning Director Eliot Lee, Stela has created a cinematic world through a series of music videos and vignettes featuring co-star Noah Gonzalez. Each piece of content is thoughtfully connected to one another in an endless loop. It is these endless loops, repetitive cycles, or habits that inspired the themes of the upcoming body of work.
Debut single “Die Hard”, thrusts Stela’s vocals into the spotlight with a performance that is equally flawless and harrowing. The accompanying music video delicately mirrors this duality with an insidious narrative and goosebump inducing finale.
