9-VOLT VELVET – They’ll Blow Your Socks Off
Indie dreamgaze outfit 9-Volt Velvet presents their new single ‘Hey, Candy’, a raucous foreshadowing of their debut album ‘Nude Beaches’, soon to be released on CD via Brighton, UK-based label Shore Dive Records.
What can be said about the first single – oh yes, finding your first love attraction is exciting.
Out May 10, this 13-track collection blends washed-out fuzzy and feedback-laden guitars, driving bass, pounding drum beats and ghosty vocals. Taking their bring of ‘rockgazedreamgloom’ even further, they will also release a limited edition of twenty 7″ lathe-cut vinyl via Cryptic Carousel at the same time, featuring ‘Riptide’ as the Side-A track and ‘Hey Candy’ on Side B.
Nestled in the fine territory between post-punk and shoegaze with a surf vibe, 9-Volt Velvet is Mark Cross (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion), Donnie Robertson (drums, percussion, keyboards) and Kevin Robinson (guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals).
Hailing from Muscle Shoals, AL and Dallas respectively, Mark and Donnie met through an ad in a local newspaper, hit it off instantly and formed a band, eventually being joined by Kevin soon after they began performing. Involving past members of of Viva Voce and The Northern Lights, they bring together several decades of experience playing shows with the likes of Starflyer 59, Spoon, The Dandy Warhols, Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate, Kill Hannah, Luxury, Lugsole, The Features, Bleach, Fold Zandura, 764-HERO and Morella’s Forest.
‘Nude Beaches’ is the culmination of 9-Volt Velvet’s musical journey, showcasing their evolution as artists and the unique sounds they have curated together. Inspired by their natural chemistry and a like-minded approach to music-making, in June 2023, they embarked on an intense 3-week studio session in Dallas, crafting an album that explores the themes of freedom and self-expression.
From the introspective lyrics to the intricate musical arrangements, every aspect of ‘Nude Beaches’ reflects the band’s commitment to pushing boundaries and taking risks. This is a sonic journey that invites listeners to embrace their own individuality and revel in the joy of truly being themselves.

The Paper Kites – New Album New Tour No Serial Killers
The Paper Kites have released their new album ‘At The Roadhouse’ today via Nettwerk Music Group, a sixteen-song collection that serves as a gripping ode to what waits for us on the winding paths of love, loss, acceptance and wanderlust.
Recorded among the red dirt and bushfire moons of Campbells Creek – a remote village outside their native Melbourne – the journey to ‘At The Roadhouse‘ began with the five-piece working together to build the music venue of their dreams. Converting an old gold-mining supply shop into “The Roadhouse,” The Paper Kites began to craft the album during an unannounced and unadvertised residency; building on the DIY spirit that’s helped them continuously win over new fans one at a time – with remarkable results like a Platinum record in the US and over one billion Spotify streams to date.
“There were no expectations or pressure around the performances – just us and a small room full of people,” explains songwriter Sam Bentley of their residency at The Roadhouse. “The whole point was to try and connect with people and in turn develop a sense of community around the music – I think that’s what happened.”
The band have previously released enthralling footage of their ‘At The Roadhouse‘ live shows with performance videos for each of the album’s advance tracks, including “The Sweet Sound Of You,” “Till The Flame Turns Blue,” “Hurts So Good,” “Black & Thunder,” “I Don’t Want To Go That Way” and “June’s Stolen Car.” As No Depression noted in a recent album review, “anyone who steps into The Roadhouse — in person or via listening to the recording — can carry with them a light against the darkness.”

Los Saints – Hanging Tough
The San Diego-based alternative rock quartet Los Saints has unveiled “If Everything Goes,” the third single from their highly anticipated debut album ‘Certified’, slated for release on July 26 via ENCI Records.
Los Saints’ 2022 EP, ‘Welcome To Confusion,’ garnered praise from the likes of Alternative Press, Under The Radar, Remezcla, Buzzbands LA, The Honey Pop and more.
Speaking on the single, guitarist/vocalist Angel Mariscal says, “It be hard not to feel like a burden sometimes, or sometimes, all the time. Or, if something ends without an answer as to why, you could go about it two ways. The first way is to seek out the answer, no matter where you have to go or who have to talk to, doing all of this WITHIN REASON and either accept that things just happen sometimes and move on or resolve things. Or two, you could let the silence go on, or let the ship that’s slowly sinking, sink and over time come up with you own answer which is, just blame yourself. So the second thing is what i tend to do, which is not good, so don’t do it. That’s what this song is about pretty much.”
Stream “If Everything Goes” HERE
Art opens a window into the soul. It doubles as a haven for all of our most intimate thoughts, desires, and emotions. Like splashing paint on a canvas, Los Saints pour all of their experiences and feelings into a vibrant mosaic of indie, alternative, and rock. They piece together memories and mantras in the form of gauzy melodies, fuzzy guitars, and dusty rhythmic grooves. Co-founded by cousins Angel Mariscal [vocals, guitar] and Emiliano Garcia [drums] as well as Gianluca Exposito [guitar], who has since parted ways with the band, the group have quietly buzzed out of the sleepy border town of Chula Vista, CA with sold out shows and acclaim from the likes of San Diego Union Tribune, Remezcla, Alternative Press, and more.
Now, Los Saints sharpen their distinct and dynamic signature style on their forthcoming full-length debut LP, ‘Certified’ [ENCI Records].
“Los Saints isn’t just a band for me,” proclaims Angel. “It’s everything. It’s all I can do. That goes for the other guys too. The more we know ourselves, the more we know what our band is and are able to define our sound. Certified is who we are not just as musicians, but as people.”
Growing up in a Mexican-American family, he immersed himself in music. His mom hailed from Tijuana, and his dad grew up in the United States. Classic rap boomed through the house as he eventually gravitated towards Mac Miller and his “lifelong biggest influence” Cage The Elephant. In 2019, he formed Los Saints with Emiliano, envisioning “music almost everyone from any background can vibe with.”
In honor of their heritage, the group chose the moniker Los Saints.
“We were thinking of the Day of the Dead in Mexico, and its primary representation is a skull,” he goes on. “We needed to make it our own, so we turned it into ‘Spanglish’ by choosing ‘Los Saints’. Like the music, it’s a mixture.”
Los Saints initially gained traction with the ‘Welcome To Confusion’ EP in 2022. The Honey Pop christened them “your next indie obsession,” while San Diego Union Tribune pondered, “Could Los Saints be Chula Vista’s version of Cage the Elephant?” Building on this momentum, the three-piece hit the studio with producer Keith Cooper (Dear Boy) and brought ‘Certified’ to life during sessions at Wildflower Recordings in L.A. The first single and opener “Faded” hinges on a bold bass line and a punchy drum groove. Guitars glow beneath a hazy and hypnotic vocal plea, “I don’t want you to look at me when you’re faded?”
On “Never Said,” a loose chime-y riff pierces a disco-style beat as falsetto rings out on the refrain.
“I’m not a dating app kind of dude,” he admits. “I’m a cave dweller, but I think so many kids my age can identify with these experiences of modern dating. On the first half of the song, you’re going into online dating with genuine intentions and looking for something true. The second half is the aftermath where reality hits, and your view changes. You realize all that glitters isn’t gold.”
Evocative of yet another dynamic, glitchy keys wrap around breezy acoustic guitar on the somberly nostalgic “If Everything Goes.” He sighs, “Don’t call me back, even though I’d like you to.”
“I was beating myself up for the way I am and how it affects romantic relationships,” he continues. “This person left your life, but you can’t help but blame yourself. Even though it was going to happen either way, you just think you’re the problem.”
Elsewhere, “Doctor” conjures “dark imagery of being interrogated like in a movie” via breathy lyrics and an off-kilter soundscape. Then, there’s “Hard.” Raw emotion seeps through the cracks in the vocals as thick distortion buoys the hook, “Help me see again who you are.”
“It’s about how being in a toxic situation—either romantically or with friends—has affected me and brought me down,” he states.
The title track “Certified” culminates on a chantable chorus awash in shoegaze distortion. Stretching to a soaring climax, it evokes the feeling of “being isolated because you’re in a relationship that your friends and family don’t approve of.”
In the end, Los Saints bring the kind of emotion that bonds us together to the surface.
“When you listen to us, I hope you find our art to be a place of comfort,” Mariscal leaves off. “Sometimes, I cry when I write. I’m always trying to come up with songs you can connect to so you don’t feel alone. The world is a tough place. We can be friends one way or another.”
Following the recording of ‘Certified’, Los Saints has grown into a four-piece, with the addition of new members, Greg Ortega [bass] and Jorge Vazquez [lead guitarist].
Chloe Star – A Complicated Picture
Rising alt-pop artist Chloe Star reveals the music video for her new single, “Wasted Youth.”
Bold, evocative, openly queer, and a fierce advocate for female empowerment, Chloe Star is the definition of a modern day rockstar. Her music is equally defiant, shamelessly blending elements of pop, rock, and punk into a catchy sound that is wholly her own.
The music video for Chloe’s new single, “Wasted Youth,” was executive produced by Chloe Star and 68 Charles Productions, produced by Jake Carter, and directed by Alicia Becker. Based on Chloe’s real life experience at a teen treatment program, the video paints a heart-wrenching, complicated, and powerful picture of the ‘troubled teen industry.’
“The ‘Wasted Youth’ music video is a raw look at the what happened to me when I was 16 years old,” Chloe explains. “I’m so excited to share my story with the world and I hope it can bring awareness to the ‘troubled teen industry’ by showing the residual trauma I experience. I am so grateful that I am still here to be able to share my story.”
Chloe Star is a Persian and Indigenous singer, songwriter, visual artist, and tribal advocate. Growing up she split her time between Los Angeles and her family’s reservation in San Bernardino. With a childhood that was chaotic and often unstable, she found solace in journaling and writing poetry. She taught herself to play piano and guitar and soon started transforming her prose into lyrics.
After spending a few years finding and cultivating her sound, Chloe made her official debut in 2023. With early support from tastemakers like EUPHORIA, EARMILK, and Unpublished Magazine, as well as a dedicated online fanbase, Chloe Star is undoubtedly an artist on the rise.
Joe Gittleman – An Unforgettable Experience
You can’t keep a good man down and that certainly rings true when speaking of Joe Gittleman.
After the shocking news that his beloved ska band The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were hanging it up, Joe Gittleman has lost no time staying active musically.
Last June, he released three songs on a split with New Orleans “New-Tone” band, Bad Operation on Bad Time Records. He followed that up with an announcement of a new band featuring him, Sammy Kay, Mike McDermott (Joan Jett), and J. Duckworth called The Kilograms, who released a five-song EP earlier this year. Now Joe has announced his debut solo album titled Hold Up that will be released this June on Bad Time Records. The lead single, “Plastered in the Rafters“, is what you’d expect from the longtime Bostonian…an upbeat ska song, with a tight groove, a dash of punk rock, and thoughtful lyrics. If you’re looking to fill the void that was left from the demise of The Bosstones, “Plastered in the Rafters” is about as good as it gets. Stream it now and be sure to pre-order your copy of Hold Up from Bad Time Records. You can also catch The Kilograms on tour this May and you might even be able to hear some of these solo songs worked into their set.

You may know Joe from his split with BAD OPERATION last summer, his recent collaboration with The Kilograms, or his 30+ years as the Bass Fiddleman of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones… but Hold Up is his first full length solo record, and contains 12 songs brimming with an energy that is uniquely ‘Joe’. With help from some friends in Big D, The Pietasters, Sammy K, and more, “Hold Up” is a touches on Joe’s favorite elements of ska, reggae, and punk, and ultimately delivers a heartfelt and unforgettable experience.

Dylan Schneider – Exploring The Heights
Country Music’s Next Rising Star” (Billboard), Dylan Schneider, “is proving to be all gas, no brakes in 2024” (Taste of Country) releasing his latest EP, Bad Decisions.
Finding “storylines that make country music listeners go wild is his superpower,” and the BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville singer-songwriter “not only lives up to his hitmaker status, but he exceeds it” (All Country News). Listen now HERE.
This is my favorite batch of songs that I have ever released,” says Schneider. “Bad Decisions shares my vision of where I’m heading creatively and sonically. I have a lot of different influences ranging from hip-hop to R&B to country, and with this EP, I’m able to explore all of that. This is also my first project where I co-wrote every single song, so I’m excited to play these out on the road for y’all and see what you think!”
Continuing to strongly connect, having already amassed over 3.8M TikTok views, 26,000 filter creates, 5,000 user-generated TikTok videos and 7.3M streams, Schneider gave into fan-demand again with the sultry track “Bad Decisions.” Seduced by a magnetic connection with an ex, the seductive song follows a couple who just can’t help but give into temptation.
Filling out the rest of the project, Schneider delivers his most-vulnerable song to date with the autobiographical “Daddy Drinks Whiskey” that “takes one of country music’s drinks of choice and turns it into a personal story he’s finally ready to share” (American Songwriter). While the stadium-ready, supercharged anthem “Ruin This Town” showcases his “rapid-fire singing style” (Billboard), the live-in-the-moment reminder of ballad “Buy That Girl A Beer” puts his eclectic vocals and lyrical growth on full display. Finally, the insanely catchy, witty and vibrant groove of “Carhartt” flows with an unforgettable, anthemic beat about a girl who got away that’s sure to be his next viral song of summer.
At only 24-years-old, Schneider has amassed a social-media following of 1.8M + fans, banked over 350M on-demand streams, and has toured alongside superstars like Florida Georgia Line, Morgan Wallen, Scotty McCreery, Nate Smith and more. Next up, Schneider joins Kane Brown on his US “In The Air” Tour.

16Volt – Still Holding A Charge
With roots dating back to the early days of the industrial rock genre, 16Volt have been successfully crossing over into multiple related genres for over three decades and retained a healthy worldwide fanbase while doing so.
Group founder, songwriter, lead vocalist, programmer and rhythm guitarist Eric Powell actually signed his first record deal in 1991 while still in his teens and delivered three albums in swift succession – ‘Wisdom’ (1993), ‘Skin’ (1994) and ‘LetDownCrush’ (1996).
That saw him working alongside co-producers such as David Ogilvie (Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy), Keith ‘Fluffy’ Auerbach (Ministry) and Jeff ‘Critter’ Newell (Ministry, Angels & Airwaves, blink-182), as well as guest musicians like William Tucker (Ministry), Marc LaCorte (Schecter Guitars) and Bryan Black (Black Asteroid). Earning both critical praise and pole positions on the US Alternative Chart and at College Radio, the band also built a significant live following as they toured extensively around North America and eventuallly signed a major deal with Mercury Records.
Producer Bill Kennedy (Nine Inch Nails, Megadeth, Sepultura, Mötley Crüe) was hired to help make ‘SuperCoolNothing’ (1998), which featured appearances from film composer Joseph Bishara (Insidious, The Conjuring, Marylin Manson, Danzig), Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails), Mike Peoples (Skrew) and Kraig Tyler (Crazytown), but the group soon found themselves in the middle of a legal battle shortly before album release when their label was bought by Seagram and its funding was cut. However, in a genius move, Powell was able to buy back the rights and made a deal with Sony to feature it within the Playstation game ‘Primal’ as well as a two-disc European release that included both the album and the game with the band skinned in as characters and utilised as in-game bonus material.

The mid-’00s saw 16Volt sign to Metropolis Records and release the albums ‘FullBlackHabit’ (2007), ‘American Porn Songs’ (2009) and ‘Beating Dead Horses’ (2012), which featured guests such as Paul Raven (Ministry, Killing Joke, Prong), Steve White (KMFDM) and Bildeaux (Lance Herbstrong), as well as mix engineer Shaun Thingvold (Strapping Young Lad, Lamb of God).
Meanwhile, an extensive touring schedule was maintained that included stints with KMFDM, Korn, Filter, Chemlab, Orgy, Prong, Stabbing Westward, Revolting Cocks, Fear Factory, Front Line Assembly, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Front 242 and more, as well as multiple successful headlining tours in their own right.
2016 saw the release of ‘The Negative Space’, produced by Marc Jordan (Velvet Revolver, The Cult, Hyro Da Hero, Die Antwoord), with ‘Dead On Arrivals’ following a year later. After a period of inactivity that saw 16Volt unable to tour, Powell began working on new material in his studio and re-signed with Metropolis Records for a brand new album entitled ‘More Of Less’ to be issued later in 2024. Meanwhile, condensed versions of the two most recent albums are being reissued on 3rd May as the single disc ‘NegativeOnArrivals’, with Powell stating: “I am excited to get this material out to a larger base through Metropolis! The collection of tracks was created during a hard time in my life and to feel them set free together is a great exorcism, I hope everyone enjoys them as we get warmed up for our new album.”
Judith Hill – Back To Black
Grammy Award-winning vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Judith Hill reclaims her strength on a deeply emotive new album, ‘Letters From A Black Widow’, which is out today via Regime Music Group.
An accompanying video for one of its key songs, ‘Black Widow’, has also been issued as a theatrical recreation of the jaw-dropping track.
‘Black Widow’ finds Hill confronting the malign label that haunted her for years, coined by tabloids and keyboard warriors because she had collaborated with two of pop music’s biggest ever stars – Michael Jackson and Prince – shortly before their deaths. She struggled in the wake of undeserved hatred for years before recently finding the emotional capacity to confront, reflect and write about her experience.
“For years the Black Widow was such a dark presence in my life that it was too looming and intimidating to even talk about,” explains Hill. However, a break from touring in 2020 provided her with the time and space for a momentous reckoning. “Being forced to stop allowed me to reach a deeper place, to really marinate and figure out what’s at my core, what I really needed to talk about. I found I had the courage and strength to face all this – to be authentic, to dive into the whole experience and turn an ocean of darkness into expressive fire.”
A New York Times interview published on 20th April which sees Hill discussing the ‘Black Widow’ tag in depth can be read HERE
The song’s parent album is a formidable battle cry that dives into Hill’s stories of discovery, resistance and redemption, bonded together with the soul, funk and blues foundations that have become her signature sound. Hill provides much of the instrumentation herself, including self-taught electric guitar, but it is not a totally solo endeavour, as her band includes her parents (renowned bassist Robert ‘Peewee’ Hill and keyboardist Michiko Hill), while she is also joined by John Staten (drums and percussion), Daniel Chae (strings) and a group of friends on backing vocals.
The album includes the singles ‘Runaway Train’, ‘Flame’ and ‘Dame de la Lumière’, and is the follow-up to ‘Baby, I’m Hollywood!’ (2021), which garnered widespread critical acclaim and was described by Record Collector as ‘breathtakingly kaleidoscopic’, while Echoes proclaimed it ‘Album of the Year’.
