LICE – A Better Understanding

Formed in Bristol, 4-piece LICE have become one of UK experimental rock’s most inventive and ambitious outliers.

Their second album Third Time At The Beach – a three-part epic exploring our struggle to better understand the world around us – arrives on the 20th September via AD 93. Darting between minimalism, rock, techno and more, it sends us hurtling us through time and space: featuring a cast of astronauts, cavemen and dinosaurs.

This follows LICE’s internationally acclaimed debut album WASTELAND: What Ails Our People Is Clear (2021). Praised as “exciting, alive, packed with musical ideas” by Financial Times and “a welcome lease of life for British avant-rock that plays with expectation at every turn” by CRACK, it also gained radio support across BBC 6Music, BBC Radio 1 and KEXP. The album led LICE to perform at major festivals including Reading & Leeds, Green Man and End Of The Road, embark on an extensive EU tour supporting Sleaford Mods, and tour across the UK & EU.

Third Time At The Beach’s concept is expressed through three movements. The first (‘Unscrewed’, ‘White Tubes’, ‘Red Fibres’) presents the child being introduced to the world, hammered into shape through prevailing culture, and realising they have reached adulthood with a blinkered understanding of the world. The second (‘To The Basket’, ‘Wrapped In A Sheet’, ‘Scenes From The Desert’, ‘Mown In Circles’) is a disorientating, alien sequence: re-evaluating fundamental concepts including money, time, nationhood and language. In the third (‘Fatigued, Confused’, ‘Third Time At The Beach’, ‘The Dance’), the individual embraces these new ideas – granting them a changed understanding of the world, and more agency in the path they take through it.

Everything is always changing in Third Time At The Beach. The album shifts from lush piano balladry to crushing industrial, and from swampy avant-garde compositions to triumphant rock freakouts. Employing vocal manipulation and field recordings, as well as cutting together studio recordings and home demos, the band produces a spatially elastic, collage-like effect. The album, like the ideas being reached within it, presents a work-in-progress.

Lyrically, the record employs a scattershot style to present the experience of learning (or ‘unlearning’). The listener visits ancient civilisations, the Industrial Revolution, outer space and the land of the dinosaurs: encountering mediaeval farmers, silver miners, cavemen, Napoleon and Satan.

Speaking on the record, the band say: “This album’s about trying to understand the world and everything in it: history, science and the way we explain it all to each other. It’s a celebration of feeling confused or intimidated by the processes that shape our lives.”

Of the album’s muscular, agitated lead single ‘Red Fibres’, LICE explain: “This song is about realising you’ve reached adulthood with a blinkered understanding of the world, and feeling confused and frustrated. After visiting some key moments in the history of language, science and the human eye, we arrive at a campsite: where two shipwreck survivors are about to have a fight.”

Alias Noone – The Fans Will Love It

Alias Noone is a melodic death metal band from Helsinki, Finland.

They mix styles of metal to create their own brand of metal music. Band’s music is full of Finnish melancholy and heaviness that will make your spine tingle.

Their first single “Shadowkeep” from the upcoming debut album is a song about the darkness that lives in some of us and the price for our actions. We’re not sure if the narrative is happening inside the mind of the murderer. In this case you don’t know who wins or loses this twisted fight.

The debut album “Weight of the World” was recorded during 2023-24 at the D-Studios in multiple sessions. The album contains 8 songs that are powerful and melodic without losing the Alias Noone signature heavyness and groove. All the songs contain so much more hooks than before. Every song tells you something about the weight of the world and the things that are pushing us down in modern society.

The production is top notch and the sound is bigger than in Alias Noone’s previous releases.

“We wanted to push the sound as big as possible without losing the things that make us sound the way we do” tells the band. the synths and programming is done by Jarno Hänninen from the band Dead End Finland. Jarno is the producer and engineer as well. “We wanted to bring some more melody to the songs and Jarno was the right man for the job. We also brought in Saara Nurmela to do some vocals in few of the songs. She has such a great range so we got so much more textures in the lead and backing vocals” Saara is featured in the songs Shadowkeep, Left Behind and Final Salute.

When asked about who will love the album, the band tells that the sound is a mixture of Dark Tranquillity, Insomnium, In Flames, Amorphis, Sentenced and more without sounding exactly any of them. “We think our sound is ours, but if you want to put a label on it then the more melodic side of melodic death metal is the closest. There are so much different things in our songs but metal fans will love the album.”

Alias Noone’s guitarist Janne Öysti passed away unexpectedly after the album was finished, so the band dedicates the upcoming release to his memory and loved ones.

BRIDGET BARKAN – Time To Celebrate

BRIDGET BARKAN Emerges From Grief With “GOOD THINGS” new single and video out now.

“My intention writing this song was to get myself out of deep, heavy, painful feelings and move towards the light,” NYC-based art pop singer/songwriter BRIDGET BARKAN says, sprinkling positivity and support on our breakfasts this morning with her new single and music video “GOOD THINGS,” out now.

Sonically glam/pop meets Grizzly Bear meets Pat Benatar, this “actress of music” and former Scissor Sisters backup singer says, “theatrical performance is always there for music videos, and my dance background always finds its way back in, as well.”

Emotionally weighted by personal tragedies, loss, and challenges exacerbated by the events of October 7, 2023 and the ongoing war in Gaza, Bridget was mired deep in a dark place. “I was going through a lot emotionally and personally that October, as were a lot of people in the world with the attack on October 7th and the impending war,” she explains. “All that I was going through personally exploded out of me, and I found connections between a lot of the experiences: the duality of sorrow and relief, as well as the heart’s true compassion… No matter the perspective, you can see that many truths exist at the same time.”

Losing her father (the celebrated songwriter/producer Marcus Barkan who wrote for Nat King Cole, Lesley Gore and even wrote the Banana Splits theme song “Tra La La”, among many others) during the pandemic meant she had to struggle with the loss in isolation due to the quarantine. Bridget also suffered a great deal of personal trauma in the last year from a miscarriage and a difficult breakup. “Good Things” finds her emerging from the grief to celebrate life and overcome all this hardship. The accompanying video is an incredibly beautifully shot and dramatized expression of the song, really showcasing her artistry and vision, capturing the beauty and wonder in life while also grappling with the inevitable pain– reminding everyone they are not alone.

Written from a 5-step songwriting process Bridget invented as a songwriting workshop instructor at Carnegie Hall where, for the last seven plus years, she has taught incarcerated youth and NYC teachers, “Good Things” holds onto the glimmer of light in a dark and hardened world.

Bridget explains about a line from the song (I used to love October changing leaves on Halloween, but this is the month I was almost a mother, now little pumpkins mean something different to me): “This lyric is probably the hardest to sing, but it came without effort and it rhymed without thinking. It’s such an honest feeling, and describes all of the fun things you imagine doing with your children on Halloween (putting your baby in a pumpkin costume, taking them trick-or-treating)… a deep sense of longing through a very simplistic description.” While expressing a very poignant take, the song remains upbeat and encouraging.

A regular in the NYC artsy pop underground that includes Bright Light Bright Light, Xavier Smith, and John Cameron Mitchell among many others, Bridget is a “Jill of All Trades” on a one woman journey through love and loss. She also formerly toured the world with Scissor Sisters and can be seen in their earth-shattering “Let’s Have A Kiki” video as one of Ana Matronic’s crew. Having inherited her father’s knack for songwriting, Bridget’s intrinsic artistry and talent is a legacy she proudly carries.

DOL – Simply The Best

Finnish melancholic dark rock band DOL have released the single “Dead Note” from their upcoming EP to be released later this year.

Vocalist-guitar player Eero “Mc” Veri backgrounds the new song:

Tragedy… Death… Sorrow…

It can suck the life out of you. If you have faced it, you know how it is. Our family faced a huge tragedy two years ago and that is how this song got written. I have always known the best songs are born out of the worst moments of our lives; I actually have tattoo on my forearm saying “I=ART=PAIN” as a reminder for that. Ever since I wrote this song, I have felt that this truly is the best song I have written so far. Most personal and meaningful. The song itself came about quite easily, I wrote almost the entire structure, melody, and all the lyrics in one go. Of course, we fine tuned it later as a band to be what it is now. Dead Note is also the debut song for our new keyboardist called Cantor-O, who did amazing job here with his pianos and soundscapes, that really put the song to a new level. Other musicians on the record were the familiar lineup from previous DOL releases:

Eero “Mc” Veri on vocals and guitar (that`s me) , Hades Faith on second guitar, Jykä “Low” on bass and Catsy on drums, as well as previously mentioned Cantor-O on keyboards/synths

Production on this song was really different compared to our last ep. We went to an actual studio, instead of using our home studios and did all the recording there, except for synths. We had our engineer/producer Arti Waine helping us on the recording part and he gave some good advice or two there as well. This time we also didn`t use almost any samples/programmed elements, that has been our thing in the past and we recorded real drums and amps instead of digital ones. It seemed to fit the song better and we always go with what serves the song best first, not what is the most convenient. That said we might go right back to more programmed elements on our upcoming ep, that this song will be part of as well… Let’s see. Tuning wise, we went down to drop C, that is a bit heavier sounding tuning than the regular drop D that we have used on our previous work. There are also new elements on the song, such as acoustic guitars and almost opera-style of singing, influenced by Nightwish.

The mixing was done by the talented young mixing engineer called Antony Potenza of Antony Potenza productions. This guy has done some amazing work on the field of modern metal, and he was awesome to work with. In fact, so awesome, that we agreed to work with him for this upcoming ep of ours, that we are now on process of writing the last bits for.

The end product Dead Note is just an amazing song, and we can’t wait to hear what our audience thinks about it and can’t wait playing it live on our upcoming shows.

Indie electronic artist Rodney Cromwell has announced that he will release his new ‘Exercise Class’ EP on June 14 via Happy Robots Records. This four-track offering follows his 2023 EP ‘The Winter Palace Remixes’.

Previewing the new EP, he shares the short and sweet electronic gem ‘Madeline Trip’, a 55-second electronic hauntological trip inspired by Marcel Proust’s seven-volume novel ‘In Search of Lost Time’.

Rodney Cromwell is the solo moniker of Adam Cresswell of two John Peel faves – 90s indie folk band Saloon and 2000s electronic duo Arthur and Martha. Since debuting with the ‘Age of Anxiety’ album, Cromwell has been featured in NME, Electronic Sound, Huffington Post, Paste, Shindig!, Louder Than War, The Big Takeover, Magic RPM, Post-Punk.com and Bandcamp Daily. National radio play includes BBC 6 Music in the UK, RTE in Ireland, airplay in Tokyo, and RNE3 in Spain, for whom he also recorded a live session.

Rodney Cromwell live is a joyful mixed-media extravaganza, incorporating analogue synths, video visuals and live instrumentation, interjected by Rodney’s ‘offbeat wit” (NME). Described ‘like a spiritual experience”, he has shared the stage with icons such as A Flock of Seagulls, Damo Suzuki, Pram, Death & Vanilla, Rowetta, M!R!M and Steve Davis. In 2022, he recorded a live session for Electronic Sound and supported Blancmange on a number of dates, further cementing his reputation as one of the most exciting live acts on the electronic music scene.

49 Winchester – Rustlin’ Up Some Good Times

49 Winchester return with Leavin’ This Holler on August 2, 2024 via New West Records.

The 10-song set was produced by the band and Stewart Myers and features appearances by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, singer-songwriter Maggie Antone, fiddler Philip Bowen, and guitarist Cole Chafin.

Today, the band shared the new single “Fast Asleep.” Gibson says, “This tune is an emotional sledgehammer. I wrote it when I was 19 years old, as one of the very first 49 Winchester songs. We used to play it live, back in those earliest days, but it somehow worked its way out of the setlist. We knew it was still a great song and wanted to breathe new life into it, and I think we achieved that. It features the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, and the sounds they were able to capture really add a lot to this track. The pedal steel on the chorus is some of my favorite work on the record from Noah.”

The band previously shared the video for “Yearnin’ For You.” Gibson said, “When I wrote this song, I felt like it really encapsulated what it’s like to be a musician, and more specifically that other side of the coin that fans don’t see as often. The people you miss so badly, the sacrifice that it takes to forge out a living. I think more importantly it’s a love song. It’s about reuniting with the one that holds you down, and how great it is to finally be back where you are loved. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

Hailing from Castlewood, Virginia (population: 1,122) in Southern Appalachia — a place where opportunity seldom knocks — 49 Winchester came to fruition when Gibson, his childhood best friend, Chase Chafin, and his hometown crony, guitarist Bus Shelton, decided to step off the front porch (on Winchester Street) and take their music to whatever stage would have them.

On the heels of supporting Tyler Childers on his recent US arena tour, the band launched their debut European headline tour this week, selling out rooms across the continent. They have also announced additional tour dates and numerous festival slots throughout the rest of the year including their Bonnaroo and CMA Fest debuts, as well as a 2-night stand at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom. Bleed Again – A Family Affair

Brighton metalcore stalwarts Bleed Again have been announced as headliner for the Download Festival District X Community Takeover at the Doghouse on Wednesday 12th June.

Returning to the fray after a period of writing and establishing a new line-up, Bleed Again are refreshed and ready to create chaos in all the best ways possible.

Having previously been a Metal Hammer ‘Band Of The Month’ in their early journey, years of touring and bringing their adrenaline fueled ferocity to audiences all across the UK. This new chapter in the Bleed Again biography is starting in an impressively exciting way.

Hitting the stage at Download is a dream for the band, as singer James Dawson explains, Download isn’t just a festival it’s a family.. and he means that quite literally!

“To me, it feels like I have been working towards playing Download for most of my life. I have been writing music with Simon since I was 16 and we first went to Download together when we were 19. I remember saying, ‘we’ll play here together one day’.
I didn’t know that would take 18 years but here we are.

I met my (now) wife there in 2009, we became a couple officially there in 2013, and now, 11 years later, we are both actually going to be performing there together. Bleed Again headline the District X Community Takeover and she will be performing a Rock/Metal fitness class on the same stage!

Everything seems to have come full circle. When you couple that with Bleed Again having a fresh line-up, a new outlook to band life and new music.. I simply can’t wait! Download Festival 2024 is going to get one hell of a wake up call on its opening day!“

Ahead of the much anticipated headline slot at Download, Bleed Again are dropping a brand new single – Parasite. Set for release on the 7th of June, this banger of a track is not only a testament to the bands experience, but also a statement that they get better with every evolution. With mix and mastering engineered by the amazing Oz Craggs at Hidden Track Studios, expect a full-on face melting experience! Full details of the new single will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The most recent addition to Bleed Again is their new drummer, Oscar Simpson. Having previously been a regular pit crawler at their gigs, he barely had time to set up his kit when the offer to play Download came in, he reminisces on this very recent past:

“Hopped on the band wagon didn’t I… You could imagine my surprise, finding out a couple weeks after joining Bleed Again that we’ll be playing Download Festival 2024!!!

My first memory of Bleed Again is getting battered in their pit at Bar 42 (a tiny rock bar in Worthing), now we’re releasing a single together and playing the biggest Rock and Metal festival in the UK alongside the bands I grew up listening to. I couldn’t afford a ticket this year so to be able to perform and then hang out at the festival all weekend is amazing. What a great year 2024 is looking to be!“

Heiko Maile and Julian Demarre – Longing For The Known And The Unknown

MELANCHOLIA – Heiko Maile and Julian Demarre, pop musicians turned film composers, have been collaborating since Camouflage’s ‘MEANWHILE’ album in the mid 90s.

With some esoteric 1970s keyboards from Japan designed for the sound of tomorrow they have now made an album for all the days after tomorrow.

Shortly before the world turned upside down, Julian had luggage waiting in the hallway… he was recording a demo, when all he wanted to do was cover up his YAMAHA CS60 synth and get in a taxi. Later when Heiko received the track, he went straight to the attic to add percussive rhythm drops, alien sounds from Mars, with his “polyphonic ensemble”, a KORG PE-1000 from 1976.

It made him think of Krautrock and Jaki Liebezeit and so they called Torsten Kamps (vocoder/flute), Ran Levari (drums) and Ingo Ito (flanger guitars). The piece MELANCHOLIA was born.

“As we were finishing MELANCHOLIA, we loved the idea of an intro so much, we crafted an intro to the introduction itself,” says Julian.

MELANCHOLIA as a longing for the known and the unknown, the past and the future, was essential to creating the album NEOSTALGIA.

“Once we finished MELANCHOLIA, our first single, it became the soul for the entire album,” says Heiko. “Using instruments and recording techniques in a way that felt different is what sets this one apart from all our other projects. Without MELANCHOLIA the album wouldn’t have come into existence.”
