Restless Road – Tighten Your Girth

Country music band Restless Road are headed back to the UK and Europe to continue their highly sought out 2024 Last Rodeo Tour.

This leg of the tour will kick off in Amsterdam on December 1^st and continue through to London on December 12^th. Tickets for the tour will go on sale to the general public starting Friday, May 24 at 10:00 AM local time with various presales beginning tomorrow. The band kicked off 2024 with numerous sold out shows on their headline Last Rodeo Tour. The first leg of the tour sold-out shows in New York City, Nashville and London, which sold out during its pre-sale, prompting them to upgrade to a larger venue, the Lafayette. The band also spent time touring on select dates with Tim McGraw and are set to join Cole Swindell later this summer as well as hit various festival spots across the US.

Just last week the band attended the 59^th Annual ACM Awards where they were celebrated for being nominated in the New Duo/Group of the Year category.

Made up of Colton Pack, Garrett Nichols, and Zach Beeken, Restless Road’s standout harmony-driven vocals and “hard-hitting storytelling” (Country Now) are front and center on their debut album Last Rodeo, which was released last fall. The project features 18 tracks including the title track, which Country Central called “undeniably catchy,” and songs ‘Go Get Her’, ‘You Don’t Have To Love Me’, ‘Sundown Somewhere’, ‘On My Way’, their #1 Sirius XM hit ‘Growing Old With You’, fan favourite ‘Bar Friends’, and more.

Contrary to the title of the album, Last Rodeo is just the beginning for the group. The title track is about resilience and staying focused on their goals, which this album is proof of. As Colton, Garrett and Zach have grown together, Last Rodeo encapsulates their journey through every twist and turn. With Colton married for almost 10 years, Garrett recently married, and Zach single, the songs incorporate a wide breadth of stories about all different stages of life and love.

Last year, the “Spotify Hot Country Artist To Watch” toured alongside Kane Brown and Russell Dickerson, while also making stops at major country music festivals like Stagecoach and CMA Fest.

Kaitlin Butts – Bigger Than You Can Imagine

Kaitlin Butts takes the directors reins for the new video for ‘Roadrunner‘, the title track from her upcoming new album Roadrunner!, out June 28 via Soundly Music.

Part travelogue, part wink-wink farce, the video depicts life on the road for Butts and her band the Mules (formerly the Ass-tronauts) in adventures both real and delightfully, hilariously embellished. The endearing video plays out like a modern day mash-up of Hee Haw and The Monkees.

“’Roadrunner’” is a reflection of my journey to now, it’s the convergence of everything I’ve ever loved: theatre, music, country, and my Oklahoma roots,” explains Butts. “The version of me depicted in the video is much closer to what I’m like onstage, where there’s real emotion and truth but also humor and a tendency to poke fun. It’s all those different versions of me at once. In making this music video, I wanted to show the highs and lows and chaotic lifestyle that I love so much.”

Produced by Oran Thornton (Brent Cobb, Logan Brill), Roadrunner! marks a major tonal shift from Butts’ 2022 sophomore LP what else can she do, a character-driven exploration of complex matters like addiction, domestic violence, and generational trauma. “With the last album I wanted to write about the struggles I’d seen people go through or experienced myself, so a lot of the songs had a sadness or darkness to them,” she says. “I feel like Roadrunner! is much closer to what I’m like onstage, where there’s real emotion and truth but also humor and a tendency to poke fun. It’s all those different versions of me at once.” Made with A-list musicians like multi-instrumentalists Russ Pahl (Sturgill Simpson, Kacey Musgraves) and Lex Price (Miranda Lambert, Parker McCollum), Roadrunner! ultimately matches that multidimensionality with a lush and fiery sound informed by Butts’ eclectic influences (outlaw country, strong-minded country-pop, timeless rock-and-roll, and more).

As Butts reveals, the making of Roadrunner! served as an essential milestone in her journey as an artist, allowing for the fullest expression yet of the larger-than-life vision she’s long brought to her work (e.g., her cinematic videos, high-wattage stage presence, exquisitely curated costumes reflecting her fondness for sequins and fringe). “Some artists get up onstage in their T-shirts and jeans and do their thing, but what comes naturally to me is the drama and going that extra mile to try to create an immersive experience,” she says. “The more I pull from my musical-theater background, the more emboldened I am. Making this album showed me that little ideas can grow and take on a life on their own, and it’s so exciting to know that sticking with my vision can lead to something bigger than I ever even imagined.”

from the private collection of Sir Elton John and David
Furnish

Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection – In partnership with Gucci 18 May 2024 – 5 January 2025 The Sainsbury Gallery, V&A South Kensington.

Opened on Saturday 18 May, Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and
David Furnish Collection is a major exhibition of modern and contemporary
photography, on loan from the private collection of Sir Elton John and David Furnish.
The exhibition showcases over 300 rare prints from 140 photographers and is the
V&A’s largest temporary exhibition of photography to date.

Selected from their collection of over 7,000 images, the exhibited photographs (many
on public display for the first time and some in the collection’s bespoke frames) are eradefining images which explore the connection between strength and vulnerability
inherent in the human condition. Whilst universally compelling, the images are intensely
personal for John and Furnish, as they are the photographs they live with in their home.

Following on from the 2016 exhibition The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the
Sir Elton John Collection at the Tate Modern, this exhibition covers the period from
1950 to the present day. It brings together an unrivalled selection of the world’s leading
photographers to tell the story of modern and contemporary photography, and
includes celebrated works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman,
William Eggleston, Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Zanele Muholi, Ai Weiwei, Carrie Mae
Weems and others.
Brand new acquisitions are on display by Tyler Mitchell, Trevor Paglen and An-My Lê.
These join some of the very first acquisitions made by John, fashion photographs by
Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn and Herb Ritts.
Sir Elton John and David Furnish, said: “Since we first loaned a selection of Horst
photographs to the V&A in 2014, our relationship with the museum has grown
significantly. Fragile Beauty takes our collaboration to really exciting new heights,
showcasing some of the most beloved photographers and iconic images from within our
collection. Working alongside the V&A again has been a truly memorable experience, and
we look forward to sharing this exhibition with the public.”

from the playful and surprising, to the contemplative and thoughtful. Whether through
the elegance of fashion photography, the creativity of musicians and performers, the
exploration of desire, or the passage of history as captured by photojournalism,
photography reveals something important about the world. Fragile Beauty is a truly epic
journey across the recent history of photography, and a celebration of Sir Elton John and
David Furnish’s passion for the medium.”
Marking 30 years of collecting, the exhibition celebrates John and Furnish’s passion for
the medium and reflects their personal taste and unique eye as collectors.
Across eight thematic sections, Fragile Beauty explores themes such as fashion,
reportage, celebrity, the male body, and American photography. Portraits of stars from
stage and screen feature, including photography of Aretha Franklin, Elizabeth Taylor,
The Beatles, and Chet Baker. Many photographs in the exhibition respond to themes of
persecution, resistance, and key moments in history, and include images of the Civil
Rights movement of the 1960s, AIDS activism of the 1980s and the events of 11
September 2001.
Highlights include: three images depicting Marilyn Monroe taken between 1957-1962
are to go on display: Richard Avedon’s well-known early photograph of the actress in
New York in 1957, Eve Arnold’s portrait of Monroe rehearsing her lines on the set of
The Misfits in 1960, and finally Bert Stern’s The Last Sitting® (1962) which captures
the star lost in thought two months before she died.

Presented together to the public for the first time, these candid portraits capture Monroe at the height of her fame, in moments between scripted scenes or staged shoots.

Also on display is Nan Goldin’s Thanksgiving series. A 149-image series, shown in its
entirety in the exhibition, it documents events from 1973 to 1999 and depicts some of
the most intimate and emotional moments in Goldin and her community’s lives, from
the euphoric to the sensual to the distressing. Displayed floor to ceiling, the
photographs become an intense homage both to the friendships that survived those
twenty-six years, and to those friends she has lost.

Other highlights include; three photographs by David LaChapelle, including the
humorous portrait of Elton John with two eggs over his eyes (Elton John: Egg On His
Face, 1999); eleven Robert Mapplethorpe images ranging from his still life including
Poppy (1988), to the iconic horned self-portrait taken in 1985; Sam Taylor-Johnson’s
Crying Men (2004), featuring some of Hollywood’s greatest male talents including
Laurence Fishburne, Robin Williams and Daniel Craig, in vulnerable states of
tearfulness and contemplation; photogram portraits of John and Furnish’s children,
taken by Adam Fuss; the viral image by Associated Press photographer Julio Cortez,
taken at the protests in Minneapolis following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020,
depicting a lone protester carrying an upside-down U.S. flag next to a burning building; Peter Hujar’s unflinching portrait, Candy Darling in Her Deathbed (1974), depicting the
American transgender actress Candy (an Andy Warhol superstar and a muse of The
Velvet Underground) in her hospital bed; Tom Bianchi’s Fire Island Pines, 1975-1983,
a series of photographs celebrating gay joy at a time when homosexuality was still illegal
across the USA , and capturing the resort’s halcyon days with poolside pictures of
tanned torsos.

Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection is
curated by Duncan Forbes, Head of Photography at the V&A, Newell Harbin, Director
of The Sir Elton John and David Furnish Photography Collection, and Lydia Caston,
Exhibition Project Curator at the V&A. The exhibition is part of the ongoing partnership
between Sir Elton John and David Furnish with the V&A, which began with their
generous support for the V&A’s Photography Centre in 2019.

History Of Guns – A Taste Of Cheshunt’s Finest

Underground 90s industrial legends History Of Guns presents their new single ‘When You Don’t Matter’.

This is the second taster of their ‘Half Light’ album, following the lead track ‘No Longer Earthbound’, where the band takes a typically unflinching look at abandonment.

Their eighth record to date, it will be released via the Liquid Len Recording Company. Serving up their unique meta-modernist Industrial sound,

On hiatus from 2012 to 2022, they returned with the album ‘Forever Dying In Your Eyes’ and then set about finishing an electronic project they’d begun in 2008. The result is this ‘Half Light’ album, produced by Max Rael, mixed by Max Rael and Caden Clarkson, and mastered by Pete Maher (U2, Pixies, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails).

Formed in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire in 1996, History of Guns became frontrunners of the UK’s Wasp Factory / FuturePunk scene of the early 2000s and their 2004 single ‘Your Obedient Servant’ was ultimately championed by The Quietus and Mick Mercer as one of the “thirty best goth singles of all time”.

On this album, founding members Del Alien (vocals) and Max Rael (keyboards, programming) are joined by guitarist Caden Clarkson, the newest member of History Of Guns. Exploring the human condition through various musical genres

Del Alien – an original punk turned goth – is an anti-authority seeker of truth and the questions behind the questions. Max Rael is in love with the idea of using music to create a separate universe for creating stories and escaping into, was an autistic, music-obsessed child, absorbing a dozen genres before diving into trance after Britpop ruined the alternative scene.

“I think most people know of either a moment, or something sadly longer, when you’re on your own, and no one knows where you are, how you are, or even if you’re alive or dead. I think this like a History Of Guns version of a ballad, for abandonment. But whenever we have something we think is beautiful, we always have to smash it up somehow. From an existential point of view it might be true, maybe we don’t matter. We are meaning-seeking creatures in a world with no objective meaning. Ultimately we have to find a way to make ourselves matter to ourselves,” says multi-instrumentalist Max Rael.

Del Alien adds, “It’s like the vain attempt to help people. Maybe they know it, maybe they don’t. It’s not a personal thing is it? Is this what society has done to us? Is it worth you thinking about? Getting cold in a box just to be burned and scattered to the wind, only to end up in the mouth of a dying junkie… or like sleeping with the sanest lunatic you ever met, but there’s no one there in the morning to make you breakfast. If the product is not good from the start, how can it be in the end? Losing the place you stand, just to hold another’s hand.”

Influenced by Killing Joke, PWEI, Bauhaus, Coil, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy and Nine Inch Nails and Swans, History of Guns was a big part of the UK underground industrial scene of the 00s, playing Whitby Gothic Weekend, as well as Futurepunk and Back to the Futurepunk events.

As of May 20, ‘When You Don’t Matter’ is available from fine music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp, where the ‘Half Light’ album (out June 20) can be pre-ordered..

Silent Mass – A Spiral Of Self Discovery

New single “The Great Chaos” from ethereal Brooklyn goths and dark dreampop band Silent Mass. “The Great Chaos” “finds beauty in the spiral of self-discovery. It’s a love song about mourning a version of your past self,” proclaims frontwoman Ammo.

Silent Mass invites disciples of Post-Punk, Ethereal Wave, Shoegaze, and 90s Alternative to a wailing wall of sound that is irresistible for anyone who has prayed for a darker and heavier Enya or is beckoned to embark on a sonic pilgrimage through territories claimed by The Cranberries, Chelsea Wolfe, Cranes, and Dead Can Dance.

In sun-drenched pre-pandemic Los Angeles, Silent Mass emerged as a solitary pursuit by Ammo Bankoff. Her debut single, a cover of ‘Total Recall’ that Big Takeover Magazine called “melancholic escapist dreamery,” was released in 2020 on Dune Altar as part of the charity compilation ‘Do You Feel That Way Too? A Tribute to Adrian Borland & The Sound.’ Shortly after, she relocated with audio engineer and guitarist Robert Duncan to join drummer and producer Alex Posell in NYC.

Nada Surf – A Sound Return For These Fortunate Sons

Nada Surf have signed to New West Records and will release their highly anticipated new LP, Moon Mirror on September 13th.

The 11-song set was produced by the band with Ian Laughton (Supergrass, Ash) and recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales. Moon Mirror is Nada Surf’s first album in four years and marks the 30th anniversary of their debut single, “The Plan”/”Telescope.”

A thrilling and moving leap forward for Nada Surf, Moon Mirror is true to the human experience—as meaningful and mysterious and sometimes absurd as it is. These new songs thrum with love, grief, deep loneliness, doubt, wonder, and hope. There is hard-won wisdom and hard-won belief in possibility. It has everything fans love and expect from the band: play-on-repeat heart punches, poetic and thought-provoking musings on the world around them, and bittersweet anthems that begin quietly but explode into soaring harmonies.

Now, the band released the first single, “In Front of Me Now,” a heartfelt warning against sleepwalking through the one life we have. “Why wasn’t I present?” frontman Matthew Caws asks himself. “I could have been living.” On the chorus he promises himself, “Today I do what’s in front of me now.”

Caws says, “Every time we make an album, I’m asked (and ask myself) what it’s about. I never know how to answer that question. I’m still trying to figure everything out, and that’s probably as close to a theme as there is. Looking back over the years, I know what our songs are about in theory: trying to reach acceptance (of circumstances, of oneself, of others), connection, a constant search for possibility and the bright side, a willingness to change, forgiveness, curiosity, checking in with one’s mortality, motivations and judgements, etc. But in the moment when making one up, I have no idea what I’m doing and maybe that’s ok. I’m just trying to stay honest with myself and take my best guess at making sense of the world.” Of their new label home, he says “We’ve been lucky to be on some really wonderful record labels over the years, and so far New West sure feels like another one of those. We couldn’t be more fortunate.”

Long hailed as a must-see live act, Nada Surf has announced the first legs of their 2024 Moon Mirror world tour. Launching on October 2nd in Washington, DC, the US tour features an appearance at the When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas, where they will perform their 2002 fan favorite Let Go in its entirety. Supporting the US dates will be their New West labelmates, the acclaimed New Zealand-based indie-rock band Office Dog. The European leg of the tour will launch on November 14th in Madrid. Nada Surf formed in New York City in 1992 and released their debut single, “The Plan”/“Telescope” in 1994. They signed to Elektra Records and released their first full-length High/Low in 1996. Produced by Ric Ocasek of the Cars, High/Low was an instant hit based on the massive success of its lead single “Popular,” but the band truly hit its stride in the 2000s, starting with the release of 2002’s Let Go. Anthemic, catchy, yet emotionally knotty, that album won them new fans and greater acclaim, and they built on both with each subsequent release, including 2005’s melancholic The Weight Is a Gift and the bone-raw The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy. Rather than summarize their celebrated career with a traditional greatest hits package, on 2016’s Peaceful Ghosts they recorded some of their most popular songs alongside the Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg, one of the only remaining film orchestras in Western Europe.

For most of the band’s thirty years, Nada Surf has had the same core lineup: Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar), Daniel Lorca (bass, vocals), and Ira Elliot (drums). On Moon Mirror, they are joined by their friend and longtime collaborator, Louie Lino.

Progressive shoegaze stalwarts A SHORELINE DREAM are back with ‘Everything Turns’, featuring RIDE frontman MARK GARDENER.

This is the first taste of the band’s eighth full-length record ‘Whitelined’ (out July 19 digitally and on limited edition 180g white vinyl). The video was filmed, directed and edited by RYAN POLICKY in Denver and features actress JULIANNA BECKERT.

Gardener explains, “It was great and one of those life-fate meant-to-be chances… I totally connected with was the track that was to become ‘Everything Turns’. Lyrically, it’s a reflection on how technology is taking over and, the more connected we get with it, the more alone we can find ourselves in the real World… It was a joy to ride these sonic waves with Ryan throughout the whole creative process. IN the end Everything Turns!”

Out on July 19, this new offering will be released as a limited edition of 180g white vinyl LP and digitally via Latenight Weeknight Records.

Formed in 2005, A Shoreline Dream is now comprised of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Ryan Policky and guitarist Erik Jeffries, who are based in Barnum, Colorado. This album sees them team up with Gardener to craft a record where shimmering walls of sound wash over turbulent percussion and swooning vocals to weave an otherworldly sonic reality.

“Lyrically, it’s a reflection on how technology is taking over and, the more connected we get with it, the more alone we can find ourselves in the real world. The backing track was special and the chemistry really happened with this track. It was a joy to ride these sonic waves with Ryan throughout the whole creative process. In the end ‘Everything Turns’!” says Mark
Gardener.

Policky and Jeffries first met Gardener at a Ride show in Denver on Policky’s birthday. Working together throughout 2023 between Ride tour dates, they wrapped up three songs, co-written and co-produced, near the one-year mark.

“Right after seriously one of the best shows in recent memory, we threw around the idea of collaborating. This was such an amazing collab. Mark was super open stylistically and the ideas flowed. I think we created something neither of us were fully expecting. Making art with true pioneers is why I continue down this path,” says Ryan Policky.

“Working with Mark, who impressed me with his songwriting so many eons ago, was like nothing else. It was like a process of possibilities somehow all hitting at once, all for the right reasons, and all in a way I don’t think either of us could have expected. It was on my 2023 birthday that it somehow took shape.”

Mark Kramer (Urge Overkill, Bongwater, Shimmy Records) oversaw the mastering and the record’s preparation for direct-to-vinyl production. ‘Whitelined’ will be the first A Shoreline Drive album released as a vinyl LP, fittingly on 180G white vinyl. The album art is based off a photo taken by Policky at Yellowstone in 2008, and re-worked into an oil on photo on canvas, shortly after experiencing that place.

Over the past two decades, A Shoreline Dream has churned out numerous releases under their own label (Latenight Weeknight Records), working with legends Ulrich Schnauss and Mark Kramer, and landing distribution by iconic UK indie label Rocket Girl Records for music written while visiting Ulrich in Leytonstone. They’ve remixed Engineers’ music for progressive label gods K-Scope and also opened for Chapterhouse for their very final appearance.

As of May 14, ‘Everything Turns’ is available exclusively via Bandcamp. As of May 20, the ‘Whitelined’ album will be available for pre-order as a limited edition on 180g white vinyl. On July 19, the album can also be found on Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp.

Sky_A – Squaring Up

Sky_A released his second single ‘Walker’ on January 26th 2024, taken from his upcoming debut album.

He recently teamed up with Josh Trinnaman, the producer and one half of electronic/progressive rock group Luo to release a remix of the single.

The project name for writer and producer Sky Ainsbury, Sky_A expands on his palette of electronic, acoustic and progressive rock music with this track, to bring a darker edge to his intimate yet cinematic sound.

Sky has synaesthesia, and seeks to share with listeners his own experience of music as something deep and immersive, comprised of shapes, colours and textures. Working professionally as a filmmaker and motion graphics artist, he also brings a strong visual element to this project, with a focus on long-form storytelling and beautiful, hypnotic abstract visuals.

Describing the impact of his perception, and his work in visuals on his music, Sky explains: “This is world-building for me. There is a big story to be told. Each track is a scene, and as far as possible I have instruments representing characters. It’s my “Swan Lake”. I’ll shut my eyes and see these elements like a rolling landscape – sometimes it’s serene and beautific, and sometimes it’s like barbed wire and collapsed concrete buildings. That’s what I want a listener to see when they hear this.”

‘Walker’ was self-performed and produced, with the addition of virtuoso drums by Adam Betts (Three Trapped Tigers, Squarepusher, Pulp) and additional production and mixing by Aneek Thapar (65daysofstatic, Rival Consoles). Lyrically it explores self-knowledge and finding inner strength.

About the inspiration for the song Sky_A says: “It’s an angry piece of music. Like, anti-imperial levels of anger. It’s about having been lied to, having participated in awful things on a huge scale, and becoming aware, resolving to undo the damage that has been done. It’s a bit like a war march, sonically. Built around the sound of my thumb on an unearthed guitar lead – a sound most musicians will recognise, barely musical – it has this feeling for me of molten rock, this tectonic movement, as this person is accepting their pain as a gift, of purposeful anger. I like it being called Walker, I hear the rhythm as a kind of limping gait, wounded but resolute. There’s a lot more to it than that – every song on the album is a scene, and the sounds are characters – which won’t make much sense out of context, but it comes at a decisive point, it’s the squaring up to the challenge ahead, it’s about seeing the horror and brutality in the world and not looking away.”

Discussing the remix of the song Sky_A states: “Josh Trinnaman is the producer behind Luo, an electronic/progressive rock group I’ve been following for the best part of a decade. Josh reached out to me after hearing a clip of Walker, saying he’d love to rework it. I’m super happy with the result, a super glitchy, dirty remix that keeps the atmosphere of the original and adds some cybery videogame synth lines.”

NIGHT THIEVES – On The Up

That massively appealing heavy rock four-piece NIGHT THIEVES are poised to climb even higher.

TThe UK rockers have released “Walkaway,” the third single from the band’s EP “Polarity,” which you will remember was released in January.

Walkaway is inspired by Scott Phillips’s novel ‘The Ice Harvest’, with the twists and turns you’d expect from a gangster crime story. The song reflects choices made of where you head in life versus the journey you experience.

NIGHT THIEVES have already gathered distinguished support from Metal Hammer, Planet Rock, Powerplay, BBC Radio One, Rock Radio Magazine, Fireworks Magazine, Total Rock, and ERB Magazine, and the band are set kick on even further this year. Coming at you from the nation’s capital and initially formed as a trio comprising Jess Moyle (Vocals), Paul Andrew (Guitar), and Rick Hunter-Burns (Bass), NIGHT THIEVES soon acquired favourable comparisons to everyone from Biffy Clyro, Royal Blood, Architects, and Spiritbox. Unleashing a sound that is drenched with stout riffery, stimulating phrasing, and entrancing vocal lines, the band soon picked up a army of followers after a slew of highly engaging live performances and the release of their hugely promising debut EP, Battle Cry, which was produced by Jason Wilson (Dinosaur Pile-up, Reuben).

The Londoners continued to perfect their craft and pushed onwards, working with Paul Visser (Black Orchid Empire, Hawxx) for their sophomore EP, Spiral. The EP helped to lift NIGHT THIEVES again and ignited the support of major press and radio. Another successful run of live shows also backed the EP, and suitably rounded off the release cycle. Following on from the success of Spiral, NIGHT THIEVES headed into the studio with Romesh Dodengoda (BMTH, Funeral For A Friend) to work on their next EP, Polarity. The band state: “We sent over our demos and Romesh loved the songs and had some great ideas for them. We didn’t have a drummer at the time but were fortunate to have Tom Connolly from Dream State fill in for us.”

Recently released, Polarity is a breath-taking record with each track demonstrating the band’s formidable use of engaging dynamics and crushing rhythms. Pummeling riffs are lurched against anthemic hooks, and this compelling blend is simply stunning. Facilitated by a lyrical focus that investigates opposing views and versions of events, the record holds surprises for the deep thinker, and now with the arrival of new drummer Ryan Delglyn, NIGHT THIEVES are set to thrive.

Ryan Wright creates songs that don’t make sense on paper–an ethereal voice singing angsty lyrics over confectionary synth-driven hooks.

Her lyrics–at times profane, often tongue-in-cheek, occasionally devastating–reveal a searing wit and a sensitive heart. Her arresting voice embodies the kind of teenage heartache that is deeply personal and yet universal and timeless. 

Her latest single, “Quarter Life Crisis” marks a new direction for Wright, as she ventures from clean indie guitars and crunchy production, married with a Roy Orbison-esque melody, into a bubble grunge sound with punky production and an edge that cuts deep. Heavily influenced by female artists like Mitski, Momma, Veruca Salt, and Blondshell, the result is a crossover between the grunge production of the 90s and the very female led category of bubblegum pop.

Wright confides, “Quarter Life Crisis is the very essence of what it feels like to be in your early 20s to mid thirties. Although the age gap is vast, the feelings are mutual because in reality it’s not easy to become an independent adult. The song nurtures the very real feelings of the fear of becoming an adult and falling further and further away from youth. The song has a bit of longing that still clings to the urge to act young and dumb like you did as a teenager, but you’re stuck in your twenties feeling like your life is maturing way faster than you are. Quarter Life Crisis is the anthem for the trials and tribulations of aging.”

“Quarter Life Crisis” is off of her upcoming EP due this summer, where the theme of pessimism rings throughout all of the songs. Wright shares, “All of the lyrics are about conflicted feelings of wanting the good but hoping for the worst at the same time, wanting to feel secure in your relationships and in yourself, but also craving the drama and the downfalls; the trials and tribulations of a narcissist.”
