GREEN LUNG‘s third studio album This Heathen Land is the most complete manifestation of the band’s vision to date, fulfilling their long-held goal to, in the words of vocalist Tom Templar, “create the definitive soundtrack to the folk horror film in our heads.” On This Heathen Land, the band have forged a sound and identity that is entirely their own, while maintaining the Sabbathian heaviness and addictive songcraft which made their previous albums so beloved in the metal underground. From the cover art to the vinyl inserts and lyrical themes, This Heathen Land is a painstakingly-researched and executed heavy metal love letter to the folkloric landscape of the UK.
This Heathen Land was produced by Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse Studios and was mixed by Tom Dalgety (Opeth, Clutch, Ghost).

Tom Templar – Vocals
Scott Black – Guitar

PIG – Lard Have Mercy
Raymond Watts aka PIG has enjoyed a stellar career since starting out as a pioneering member of the mid-1980s industrial rock scene.
As well as releasing fourteen albums as PIG, he has toured with KMFDM (he was a member of the band in their early days), Nine Inch Nails and Einstürzende Neubauten, written music for fashion and film for Chloe, Marios Schwab, Halston, The Row, as well as creating the sound design for the exhibition ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Watts also collaborated with the late fashion icon Alexander McQueen, who commissioned him (with John Gosling) to embellish the serene instrumental track ‘Inside’ (from the 1999 PIG album ‘Genuine American Monster’ album) for the soundtrack to ‘Plato’s Atlantis’. The show was reprised after McQueen’s untimely death in as the finale of ‘Savage Beauty’, a posthumous retrospective that broke all records at both The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
‘Red Room’ is the follow-up to 2022’s ‘The Merciless Light’ and is the sound of Watts beating the hammer of hope on the anvil of despair. However, far from being the dying light of decay, it is rather a spark and an ember, a torch in transition lighting up the house of PIG before Watts burns it up and blows it down, cutting through the scaly rind of PIG to the tender heart and the soft underbelly of the boar.
Watts has co-written much of ‘Red Room’ with Jim Davies, a longtime member of Pitchshifter but best known for his acidic and acerbic guitar lines on many chart hits by The Prodigy. Several regular cohorts are also present and correct, along with some new additions most majestically heard on ‘Dum Dum Bullet’ as the PIG choir: Emily Kavanaugh (Night Club), Chris Hall (Stabbing Westward), Burton C Bell (Fear Factory, Ascension of the Watchers), I Ya Toyah, Chris Connelly (Revolting Cocks, Ministry), En Esch (KMFDM) and Marc Heal (Cubanate) are among those featured.

Thunderous introductory single ‘Crumbs Chaos & Lies’ sees an appearance by Alexis Mincolla (3Teeth) and is accompanied by a video made by the elusive visionary Ibex. Watts says of the song: “I like to wrap the poison sweets in the finest treats and envisioned this as the sound of PIG officiating at my own funeral.”
Elsewhere, Chris Hall delivers a soaring vocal performance on ‘The Sick Man’s Prayer’, Watts’ old KMFDM bandmate Günther Schulz (aka ‘The Czar of Guitar’ with his ability to flesh out and flay a PIG song while simultaneously licking its wounds) appears on the anthemic ‘Dirty Mercy’, while the great jazz trumpeter Enrico Tomasso (who has worked on and off with Watts for three decades) brings his deft and delicate touch to ‘PIG Is At The Window’.
‘Red Room’ is truly the word of the Lard, as well as being art for the heart and badassery of the highest order. Bathe in the brutal beauty of PIG and get a scrubbing you’ll never forget.

“Sweet Gyration is an original song from 50s comedy rock musical I’m putting on at Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year. In the musical Johnny B Bad (Evil Elvis character) goes to a mad scientist “Dr Squijy Sqodgy” who gives him a potion that will help him shake his hips better than his nemesis in Vegas, This Scientist is a combo of Johnny Rotten and evil lab professor from dystopian novel “A Brave New World”. The character even developed a Rock’n’Roll machine called “The Gyration Station ‘ which harnesses Gyrowaves from deceased Elvis Presley’s hair! A punky rock song, great fun: sounds like if The Sex Pistols had a baby with Eddie Cochran”. – Sean Findlay

LYRA – Just Scratching The Surface
Cork-born artist LYRA releases her debut, self-titled album, unveiling a comprehensive reflection of who the artist is today.
Written between Los Angeles and London, the 14 tracks express the broad range of her musicality, journeying from the dark and sultry “Chess” to the ethereal radio hit “Falling” and the pulsating dance anthem of “Lovers”, all of which elevate her powerful vocals that have given her a one-to-watch status.
“When I began writing music, I aimed for a specific style,” she explains. “But as I started developing, I wanted to write a ballad when I was heartbroken, or an irreverent song when I had a one-night stand, or an upbeat song about going on the lash with my friends and dancing until three am. To me, music should be fun and evoke different emotions, and you’re not going to do that through one sound.”

Underpinning these textures is Lyra’s commanding voice that effortlessly plays wavers between lightness and depth, and fragility and strength, which immediately enriches the emotion in her words. Her raw and powerful vocals are put to exacting use: lyrically, the album offers snapshots of past relationships – specifically one turbulent end and its liberating aftermath. “The first ballad I ever wrote was ‘Someone New’, and it took me a lot of heartbreak and learning to get there,” she says. “But the album also documents when I embraced my single life and went a bit carefree and wild. People will understand much more about me, because all the songs are about my life. Except for ‘Naked’. That’s my alter ego coming out.”
In 2016 Lyra picked up a record deal with Polydor and relocated to London. The first Polydor-release single “Falling” garnered great interest, with strong radio play and a Choice Music Prize Song of the Year nomination in 2019 alongside acts like Hozier, Roisin Murphy and Lankum.
To develop Lyra’s craft, manager Caroline Downey (credited for discovering Hozier) put her in contact with Burns (Lady Gaga, Charlie XCX). Enamoured by her promise, he invited Lyra to LA for writing sessions in Max Martin’s studio to kick off the process of making the album. “It was an incredible experience, it was like a whole different world,” she says. “These are people who created Lady Gaga’s sound, they’re masterminds in the industry. That they were interested in working with me gave me the confidence to believe in myself more, which in turn allowed me to experiment and have fun.”
Other collaborators on the album include Dan Priddy (Bastille, Rag’n’Bone Man), The Nocturns (James Arthur, Maisie Peters) and Phil Cook (Lewis Capaldi, Ellie Goulding).

Lyra has had notable musical appearances on shows like Ireland’s Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars, The Tommy Tiernan show, numerous Late Late Show appearances and The Main Stage with Mark Fehily. Her talent extends to TV also: in 2021, she joined Boy George, Jedward and Aston Merrygold on the judging panel for Virgin Media Ireland talent show The Big Deal, and Lyra has also taken part in Ireland’s Celebrity Gogglebox. Her music has also been featured on hit TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy and Love Island.
Supporting the likes of Pink, Westlife, Blondie and Sting, her sell-out live appearances prove that while Lyra’s music is laden with intensity and drama, her bright personality is irrepressible. Her current extensive Irish tour purveys her musical artistry alongside striking fashion statements, and comes after previous festival appearances at Wilderness, Leeds and Reading, Isle of Wight, Latitude, Lollapalooza in Berlin, the main stage at Electric Picnic, and Brighton Pride.
Though Lyra is an accomplishment that surmises her last several years of heartbreak, growth, and musical discovery, it’s also an opening gambit to her musical endeavours, an introductory marker to the path that lies ahead. “I feel I haven’t shown who I am or what I am until now,” she says. “People in Ireland will think that’s a strange thing to say because I’m known there. But as an artist, I feel like I haven’t scratched the surface at all. This feels like just the beginning.”

akua naru (Live Review) – The Sound Of Love
“If love had a sound…this would be the sound”……. (akua naru)
There’s an orchestral intro- a contusion and profusion of strings, melodic keys, long notes, mellow strokes on guitars before a charge, a bolt of electricity, a zebra light show and the tightest of beats proclaims the arrival of the legend akua naru.
It takes a moment before we realize that she has been rapping out of sight offstage, and suddenly, there she is—majestic and beautiful. The force of her undeniable stage presence hits us hard, as if to restart our hearts, adrenaline flowing. Let us offer you a snapshot.
Joy; a jazzy keys intro, a sound smooth, syrupy and sweet waves over us before akua and her deep, rich voice, its mellifluous tones blending effortlessly with her talented keys player and vocalist begins her evening promise of soulful lyricism and potent energy to all lucky enough to be in Camden’s Jazz Café tonight.
The audience know her and love her, their attention totally hers long before she has given us a glimpse of her fabulous leather jumpsuit or a flicker of her magisterial command. Her outrageously brilliant drummer understands her groove like it’s second nature, effortlessly blending elements of funk, jazz, and soul into his playing. He lays down a beat as solid as any reinforced concrete foundation, holding down the backbone of Joy with steady kicks and snares, before breaking out into dazzling fills. He uses the full range of his impressively comprehensive kit, so much the master of the percussion and the owner of the beat that he is able to look at the people around him, to connect, to challenge, to celebrate the performance.
I’m not an avatar—I love to write about love, sex, intimacy, relationships.”
akua naru
There’s a segue into Sugar (Honeyicetea), the lyrics showcasing her often introspective and thought-provoking political stance, touching on a wide range of social and political issues naming Chomsky’s aim of empowering the oppressed, maximizing communal decision-making and cooperative activity for all. A huge glitter ball quivers above the pulsating crowd, the mood elated, the infectiousness of akua’s insight and inspiration pervading the audience. Akua is barefoot, dancing and improvising and jamming with her band as the music builds to an overwhelming crescendo before snapping back to that controlled beat, the technical prowess underpinning the enormous emotion and expression.
It’s a poetry thing."
A pause gives way to a guitar solo so insistent and way down low there in the boots of the bass that the buzzing reverberates sexily through us, connecting us in its thrumming intensity and urgency.
Her honeyed voice, her fluent rapping style and intricate wordplay reminds us of Madvillain’s ‘Figaro’ as she performs ‘Run Away’.."
akua shouts out to all single mothers “…like my mother…”. Her honeyed voice, her fluent rapping style and intricate wordplay reminds us of Madvillain’s ‘Figaro’ as she performs ‘Run Away’, the narrative of socio-political realities of survival raising children on your own seamlessly blending with jazz, soul, and spoken word, creating a rich and dynamic sonic experience. The crowd wholeheartedly agrees- they click their fingers softly to say “this really resonates with me”- something deep has touched them, they feel what she is saying. It’s a poetry thing.
We feel we are part of something special- we belong to her, we are chosen by her."
There’s a palpable sense of passion and authenticity in the Jazz Café; akua changes the mood by calling out, “Y’all did not come here to stand still- you came to move, to be loud…tonight it’s all about love!” akua forges an instant connection with the people here tonight and as the night progresses, we witness just how powerful this becomes. We feel we are part of something special- we belong to her, we are chosen by her. The sharing of anecdotal moments about her childhood, her mama, being a mother- the stories of love and loss establishing the most formidable bond and the euphoria swirls and weaves around us intoxicatingly.
akua tells us, “I’m a poet first” (before a hip-hop artist), and this resonates strongly; after all, we were lured here by the beat. She uses vivid imagery, unconventional syntax, and a ‘free,’ almost stream-of-consciousness style of beat poetry to explore themes of liberation, social justice, and spiritual enlightenment. She combines this with the finest wordsmithery, clever rhyme, assonance, and dissonance, as well as social and cultural issues, to convey socio-political resistance and artistic expression. Her music is authentically her—she tells us as much tonight, saying, “I’m not an avatar—I love to write about love, sex, intimacy, relationships.”
Somebody Mama changes the mood again with its slow, contemplative start—a sonic love letter to the power and beauty that is motherhood. This is a testament to her artistry and musicianship. From the infectious grooves and hooks of her band to the impassioned delivery of the lyrics, this song embodies what she is all about—sharing intimacy, vulnerability, and ultimate strength through poetry, jazz, connection, and jamming. I think now you get the groove?

bell hooks comes to mind of course; and her writing and work (best known on intersectionality of race, feminism, class and gender). akua’s album “All About Love- New Visions” is clearly inspired by hooks’ work of the same name. If hooks were alive today and had such a thing as a playlist, akua naru would surely be on it.
The evening was a sonic balm to those who understand the power and urgency of love – a cathartic and energising experience where poetry, conversation, passion and story were combined with a mesmerising heartbeat and stellar musical experience- a cultural, spiritual, magical journey.
We felt the love tonight, the abandoned, neglected and outcasts assembled felt the love tonight, even if it was ever so fleeting we felt the love.
akua naru played The Jazz Cafe, London on 25th April 2024

Lauren Ann – Feel The Force
Belfast based Lauren Ann is an alternative, indie artist whose music is packed full of garage rock exuberance and grunge dynamics, brought together with a dreamy pop edge.
Having grown up listening to artists such as Nirvana, Pixies and The Cure, Lauren infuses her music with a 90’s tinge, delivering a refreshing yet nostalgic sound.
Her latest single “Bite” is the second track from her upcoming concept EP. Each song is inspired by one of the deadly sins, with her previous single “Need” symbolising greed and “Bite” focusing on wrath. The songwriter shares, “In a way I’ve created a character or alter ego who experiences all of the sins in some way. Some of the songs are also about the different types of people I have met in my own life. I feel like everyone has encountered negative feelings of greed, wrath, pride etc. at some point in their life.”
Sonically, “Bite” is influenced by the likes of Deftones, The Smashing Pumpkins and Hole. As she chants, “You’re addicted to the fear that you create, how could you love so much hate,” Lauren depicts the intense vengeance that comes with wrath. Her raw and powerful vocals are accompanied by clashing percussion, throbbing bassline and a gritty guitar, that further emphasise the destructiveness that is associated with this specific deadly sin.
Lauren Ann has already curated a string of notable support slots with artists such as Tom Grennan in Custom House Square, NewDad, Sprints and Twin Atlantic, as well as playing at festivals and showcasing events such as SXSW, Ireland Music Week, Output and Stendhal Festival. 2024 is set to be an explosive year for Lauren Ann, establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with.
