Gates Open – Your Nightmares Awaken
The Finnish death/thrash metal band Gates Open is set to release new EP ‘Black Clouds Over The World’ on October 4th 2024 via Inverse Records.
The first single ‘NIghtmares Coming True is released NOW.
The band comments:
“In shadows deep, where darkness resides. Nightmares awaken, creeping in my mind.
Nightmares coming true. Drowning in this darkness, where dreams are allowed.
In this twilight realm, where the dreams distort. Forever haunted, as these nightmares come true. We all have our own nightmares and fears and it would be everyone’s worst nightmare if they all came true.”Â
Gates Open is a Finnish blackened death/thrash metal band. Gates Open is a band founded in early 2023 by two men, the band includes Jere NeejÀrvi, in the role of guitarist/composer, and Tommi Manninen as singer.
The members’ united history began already in 2007 during the previous band’s time. Our band moved to the distribution of the Inverse Records label in June 2023. The first official single “The Awakening” under Inverse Records was released in June 2023. The second official single “Let The Night Become Your Guide” was released in October 2023. Ashley Monroe – Revving Up The Summer Vibes
On Friday (July 5), 3x-GRAMMY nominated artist Ashley Monroe released her new single ‘Hot Rod Pipe Dream‘.Â
Co-written with her longtime collaborator Brendan Benson and co-produced by Monroe and GRAMMY-winner Gena Johnson, the sun soaked summer anthem continues Monroeâs sonic expansion that began with 2021âs Rosegold.
About the new single, Monroe explains:Â “I wrote ‘Hot Rod Pipe Dream’ with Brendan Benson a few years ago, and itâs honestly one of my favorite songs Iâve ever written. We brought together all the best summer, rock n’ roll, beach boy lovin’ vibes we could muster up and turned it into a musical feeling that brought us both undeniable joy. Then we took those same vibes to the recording studio, and I couldn’t be more excited to finally release this song. It’s different from anything else I’ve ever done, but it stands out as something special to me. And of course, whatâs summer without a hot rod pipe dream?”
‘Hot Rod Pipe Dream‘ follows the release of ‘Risen Road‘, a cover of Fred Eaglesmithâs ‘I Like Trains‘, and her late 2023 single ‘Over Everything‘ which Billboard called âAiry, understated and clear-eyed, the song is lifted by the quiet assuredness in Monroeâs vocal.â Monroeâs recent work has been met with praise by American Songwriter, CMT, Stereogum, and People Magazine, who interviewed Monroe about her musical âfresh start.â
Earlier this year, Monroe performed her first headline show in Nashville since 2015, and just recently announced she will be performing at AmericanaFest 2024 following a UK tour supporting Little Big Town on their âFriends of Mineâ tour. Find a full list of tour dates below or visit her website.
Over the past two years, Monroe has remained busy writing and collaborating, most recently appearing on Ben Chapmanâs single ‘Is It Ever Really Gone’ and co-writing Miranda Lambert and Leon Bridgesâ ‘If You Were Mine’.Â
Her critically-acclaimed 2021 album Rosegold received praise from Rolling Stone, The Nashville Scene, No Depression, Vulture, Paste Magazine, Garden & Gun, Stereogum, Pitchfork and many more. In their 2021 Best Albums of the Year coverage Vulture proclaimed, âMonroe continues to refine her talents as a writer and a vocalist while expanding her artistic palette in a batch of songs that slides from synth-pop to spectral, psychedelic R&B to gothic pop to lush, orchestral balladry to muted country rock.â

PET NEEDS – Still Packing A Punch
Continuing their hot streak into the summer of 2024, PET NEEDS are back with the scorching âThe Age That You Wereâ single, ahead of a string of sizable festival shows this Summer.
The band have also just confirmed a European and UK tour supporting Laura Jane Grace.
On the back of a Top 20 Album and the completion of a major UK tour in the spring, PET NEEDS continue to shatter the glass ceiling with their punch-packing new single.
On âThe Age That You Wereâ, the DIY Essex quartet find themselves inspired, quite literally, by a bit of household DIY from their childhood that seemed to make quite a dent on a young Johnny Marriott⊠As the frontman elaborates:Â
âI am now the age I remember my dad being when he knocked through a stud wall and fitted sliding doors in my childhood home. I can’t even hang a picture frame. Still. Although I did change my car brake lights the other day!Â
It was especially fun to sing the line about “creatives who either (grow) up into legends or f*cking disgraces” down John Lydon’s custom microphone whilst in the studio. The very one he recorded the whole last PIL album on, before gifting to the studio. I’m not saying that line is about him, but I’m not saying it’s not either.â
Arriving with brand new visuals, you can also check out the official video for âThe Age That You Wereâ today.
Filmed by Ben West, it features footage from the road and the studio when they recorded âIntermittent Fast Livingâ. This footage has also been made into a documentary called âFractured Party Peopleâ which is premiering on 10th August at Colchester Arts Centre.
The single is another fine extract from PET NEEDSâ first official UK Top 20 Album âIntermittent Fast Livingâ, which crash landed into the charts at No.17 earlier this year. Their highest charting to date, it saw the band sitting in the charts next to pop megastars the likes of Kanye West, Ariana Grande, and IDLES.Â
Encapsulating the stop-start life of a contemporary punk band constantly jolting between rockânâroll dreams and domestic duties, âIntermittent Fast Livingâ is as riotous as it is relatable. Their third studio album in as many years, its frantic 11 tracks pinball through songs of love and loss, the trials & tribulations of touring, punk protests against pay-to-play shows, lucid life lessons learnt from a new puppy, and just about everything in between. It includes previously released singles Separation Anxiety and Sleep When Iâm Dead, which had spins from Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music, John Kennedy on Radio X, Total Rock, BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and Kerrang Radio.
Of the record, Punktastic praised â[PET NEEDSâ] superpower comes from channelling their normality and repurposing the magic they experience in their everyday lives as insightful, honest rockâŠÂ enough bangers to open up an ironic pitâ. Elsewhere V13 Magazine hailed âIntermittent Fast Livingâ as a âgloriously drunken, frantic and punchy punk rockâ record, whereas The Soundboard championed the new album as âa phenomenally tight and robust package from front to back, as fulfilling on the most cursory, surface-level listen as it is to take a proper deep diveâ.
Recorded in just two weeks and now a UK Top 20 Album, âIntermittent Fast Livingâ is a breathless new addition to the PET NEEDS canon, created at Vada Studios with producer/sound engineer George Perks (Enter Shikari, You Me At Six, Mogwai, Skindred). With the album streaming and on physical formats now, the band will also be releasing a special bonus variant of the vinyl in the coming weeks – keep your eyes peeledâŠ
New single âThe Age That You Wereâ arrives following the completion of a major UK & European headline tour in April and May. The band now fix their gazes firmly on the rest of the year with summer festival appearances at 2000Trees, Beautiful Days and One For The Road â and then a tour across Europe and UK supporting Laura Jane Grace.

The Distinguished Order Of Disobedience (The D.O.O.D.) are a standout in the Florida metal Scene. Originally put together by Raynus and Jonzey, this Sarasota band has found its niche among the many great independent metal acts, not only in Southwest Florida, but nationally as well.
The Floridians have found inspiration over the years from music that is hard driving with good hooks, as well as unabashed and unafraid riffs reminiscent of the pioneers of metal and hard rock, all the while grinding forward into the music of today and tomorrow.
The diversity of their individual influences certainly informs the music, yet there is enough commonality to ensure a coherency that runs throughout the band’s catalogue. From the horror rock “House of the Dead,” to the tastefully savvy guitar work of “Murder,” it is difficult not to find something to latch onto with the musicality of this crew.
The Distinguished Order Of Disobedience prides itself on its stage show, a high energy feast of metal, that is different and surprising at every venue. As a band, they are dynamic and eye-catching as they take the stage and take over the room. The audience can never be certain what’s coming next, except a great show! This can be attributed to the multitude of shows they’ve played over the years with an array of local and national acts. The D.O.O.D. is 100% fan-friendly and takes great pride in being part of a surging Florida metal scene.
BEN BROWN – Well Worth Checking Out
Hot on the heels of the release of first single âBlueâ, new signing to Xtra Mile Recordings, BEN BROWN, announces his new EP by the same name.
Produced by friend and mentor Frank Turner, âBlueâ EP is out digitally on 12th July 2024.
Whilst writing music for his first solo offering, Ben had a chance meeting with Frank Turner. After catching a performance at his neighbourâs barbecue, Frank invited Ben to record some songs in the recording studio at the bottom of his garden.
Bonding over a shared enjoyment of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, together they set about capturing the songs Frank had heard – a process which turned into one of play and exploration. There were no arrangements other than voice and guitar initially – but together they layered vocals and drum machines to create recordings that sound like the songs heard at the bbq – but more!
Ben says of the session:
âMany laughs were had at the recording and listening back to the performances you can really hear how comfortable I had become in Frankâs garden studio. At lunch time – Frank would cook me his signature dish ⊠Pasta Surprise â which is apparently the only thing he can cook. Being a good producer is as much technical prowess as it is communication and personal skills. Frank has both of these.
The songs themselves are sort of vignettes in my head – when I sing them, I can picture a scene. The way the camera would move, the grain of the film. I believe them to be well crafted – both structurally and melodically – they are more understated than my previous work, there is no loud drum kit or overdriven guitar to hide behind. For me, this is more vulnerable, and to be honest more exciting!â
Lead track âBlueâ, released last week, has already picked up plays on BBC Introducing Essex and BBC Introducing Suffolk as well as Radio X Xposure Daily. Watch the new video here.
In July, Ben Brown will head out on the road supporting Frank Turner on his sold-out UK Tour. His ability to connect with an audience on such an immediate and warm level mean his live performances are well worth checking out.

SKINNY LISTER – It’ll Be A Rowdy Winter
Following the release of their rave-received âShanty Punkâ album last year, SKINNY LISTER unveil a brand-new EP to be released digitally on 5th July 2024 through Xtra Mile Recordings.
The âPub Shed Bootlegâ features 6 tracks from the âShanty Punkâ album, played live at the legendary Forge & Flagon pub shed earlier this year. It perfectly encapsulates the raucous fun that is a Skinny Lister gig.
Dan Heptinstall explains:
âThe Forge & Flagon has been a big part of the Skinny Lister story from our very beginning and has always remained some kind of spiritual home for the band. We named our first album after it and have enjoyed so many great and often messy nights in The Forge over the years. We recently shot the video for our single âCompany Of The Barâ there – which perfectly captures the atmosphere of the place.
For our latest release â the six-track live EP âPub Shed Bootlegâ â we again felt the enduring pull of The Forge. This time we brought along a crude recording setup to capture us playing a selection of songs taken from our recent album âShanty Punkâ. It was great to have Smudge and Mandy (landlord and landlady) along with a whole bunch of Forge regulars join us for the session to help fill the shed and the recordings with that truly unique atmosphere. Even Party George is present to get the place jumping with his self-penned song âWilliam Harkerâ.
As Shanty Punk was largely made as an album to be played live â itâs great to take these six tracks and hear them in a live but intimate setting, giving the tracks an even more beer-soaked rowdy atmosphere and a fresh dimension. It has also been a great way to touch base with Skinny Listerâs origins and first inspirations, which remains a part of the bandâs core DNA to this day.
Cheers to that and long live The Forge!”

The release comes just before a summer of festival performances at 2000 Trees Festival, Vainstream and Angeliter Open Air Festival before touring across Europe supporting Frank Turner.
They then return to the UK for their traditional end-of-year headline tour bonanza.
Regularly cited as one of the best live bands in the biz, the Skinniesâ annual live pilgrimage around the UK has become the stuff of gig circuit legend in recent years. And already champing at the bit to go again, the band will be hitting the road for a run of unmissable fixtures from Newcastle to Nottingham, Bristol to Birmingham, multiple venues in Scotland, plus sizing-up the prospect of a big pre-Christmas finale at Londonâs The Scala at the tail end of this year.
As Dan Heptinstall says of the 2024 Winter tour:
âOur end of year wouldnât be the same without hitting the road for our annual Skinny UK Tour. And Christmas doesnât officially start until we hit London for the Skinny Christmas bash, for which we go even bigger this year – at the amazing Scala in Kings Cross. Canât wait to get back out there for some serious partying! We might even find space in the set to test drive a few new tracks. See you at the barrier!â

The Soapgirls – Working Up A Lather
Infamous rock duo The Soapgirls head to the US for a run of dates off the back of the success of the single âBreatheâ rising in the US Spotify charts.Â
The Soapgirls are one of the most hard-working and nicest bands in the world. Their style of music is grunge and rock, drawing influences from Alice in Chains, Lamb of God and Nirvana, through to Fleetwood Mac, Blondie and classic rock and pop.
The music is gritty and rocky, yet melodic and catchy, with vocals that range from sweet harmonies to raw growls.
The band tours for 6-8 months each year, playing across the UK, Europe, Japan and USA, steadily building a growing fanbase and carving their own unique niche. Between shows, the band live streams on YouTube and Instagram up to three times a week to its dedicated community of fans, called âSoapsudsâ.
The Soapgirls – sisters Camille (Mille) on bass/vocals and NoĂ©mie (Mie) Debray on guitar/vocals – are originally from France and moved to Cape Town as children. They have always been socially conscious and acutely aware, largely because of their own challenges, of the need to care for people who are less fortunate. They became an international attraction as street performers singing and selling homemade soaps to tourists in order to donate the proceeds to hospitals â which earned them the name âThe SoapGirlsâ.Â
As teenagers, they appeared on the TV show South African Idols (equivalent to American Idols and the X Factor), and then stormed to #1 on the album charts in South Africa with a dance-pop debut album and record deal with Universal. They quickly realized the price of this success and fought for years to free themselves from the trappings of a major label. Since then, the band has taken a completely DIY approach to their music, delivering the rock and grunge style of music they love, with a steadfast determination to do things on their own terms.Â
They take an uncompromising and sometimes unapologetic approach to their live shows, advocating freedom of expression and encouraging the audience to be just as comfortable, as their song title suggests, âIn My Skinâ as the girls are when they perform.
The SoapGirls remind us that music can still be straight to the point, honest and exciting.

I started playing guitar when I was seven."
Emily Duff
1st 3 Magazine: This is the last of your UK gigs on this yearâs tourâwhat have been the highlights?
Emily Duff: Every show is a highlight for me! Because itâs a privilege to play hereâthis is where Iâve found people love music and the kind of music I do because theyâre kind of lyrical, and theyâre stories and people love to connect through them and listen. I really like playing in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, at The Robin Hood. They have this thing called the âSunday Showdownâ and it was special because I got to play on my birthday!
1st 3: The Yorkshire people are very honest!
E: It was two shows, and they both sold out. I sold all my vinyl and almost all my merch! Itâs all been special, but that one stood out because the audience was so appreciativeâand it was my birthday.
1st 3: It has been said that you are a âgenre benderââyou donât stick to one style.
E: Yes, I say that I have musical genre-dysphoria!
1st 3: So going back to your earliest memories (and I know that you had a lot of trauma when you were little), how was your musical style shaped? What was in your parentsâ record collection?
E: Oh well, thatâs the thing; they did have great records in the house. While they werenât good parents, they were good musical teachers. Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Janis Joplin, Brill Building writersâNeil Diamond, Ellie Greenwich, Carole King⊠so great songwriters. My favorite band growing up was Blood, Sweat & Tears. I liked The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, and I loved pop. I watched The Partridge Family and The Monkees, so that stuff was really important to me too.
1st 3: Your mum played guitar?
E: She was a folk guitarist. She had a 1967 Giannini guitar which she still has, and she taught me four chords: G, Am, Em, and D7. You can play almost every song from the 1950s if you know those! That was her era. I started playing guitar when I was seven.
1st 3: You went on to play âcello?
E: Yes, I was a classical cellist for a really long time, which is how I got into writing country music with string arrangements. I was writing baroque-style string quartet arrangements of songs.
I woke up one morning and saw that I was smoking the same cigarettes and drinking the same scotch as my mother, and I said stop. Thatâs it."
Emily Duff
1st 3: Have you always been a composer? When did you start writing music?
E: I was playing Haydn, Bach, Romberg, and then I started writing sonatas for âcello andâ450 Camaro engine! So right away I thought, âOh thatâs a noise!â and started designing, making, and building instruments. I went to college (SUNY Purchase) where there was a dance program and a music program. I wasnât in either of those, but I got together with musicians, dancers, sculptors, and choreographers, so I wound up doing a lot of performance art on instruments that I designed and built.
1st 3: String?
E: Mostly, yes, but string instruments that were combined with percussion.
1st 3: Chromatic or diatonic?
E: Chromatic. They were all based on what I knew, but I took it to a different place.
1st 3: How did your career develop from then on? What did you want to do? Did you want to be a performer?
E: I was supposed to graduate (and I did graduate!) from school and go to downstate medical to be a nurse midwife. But I got thwarted again! I was living in Tribeca (in the â80s); I wound up in a kitchen, started apprenticing, and then I became a chef for 25 years! I was cooking, I started my own restaurant, and in 1995 I also sold a script to Disney, Touchstone. Itâs been like this, my life; music, teaching, cookingâIâve wanted to do it all.
1st 3: Do you think your childhood struggles made you more of a go-getter? More determined to succeed? You created a great big life for yourselfâŠ
E: Yes! My sister used to say we were raised by a pack of wolves, but I always say I was raised by a pack of cigarettes. I started smoking when I was ten years oldâI was pinching my grandmotherâs cigarettes. Because I had no boundariesâI had no boundaries. And that was really good and really bad. Because I started so young I stopped everything when I was 24. I got sober at 24. I woke up one morning and saw that I was smoking the same cigarettes and drinking the same scotch as my mother, and I said stop. Thatâs it.
1st 3: Has it been really important to you to be a good mum?
E: Well, I never thought Iâd have children, get married⊠but then I met the person who made me want them. I mean, I got it. I never understood before, why people wanted children until I met my husband.
I donât call it songwriting, I call it song catching."
Emily Duff
1st 3: Tell me a little more about your role as a mum, following your atypical start to life.
E: Itâs really important to me. I didnât realize how important it was to me until I had my daughter Sylvia. She was named after my grandmother because after my mum left, my grandmother moved in, and she was the only person who ever made me feel safe. And I loved her. When Sylvia was born and I looked at her for the first time, my first thought was âOh hello again!â That this was something I was supposed to do.
1st 3: Like songwritingâit comes easily to you. Weâve read that sometimes you can write a song a day.
E: I do! I have to stop myself from writing!
1st 3: Have you always been like that?
E: Iâm a double GeminiâI donât call it songwriting, I call it song catching. Most people are so caught up in being the God of it that they donât sit back and let the song happen. I feel more like I have antennae, rather than being a pilot. Itâs like when I was back being a chefâpeople would ask me, whatâs the difference between being a male and a female chef? And I would say, a female chef feeds her customers and a male chef feeds his ego! I donât feel the need to lay down on top of an ingredient and fuck it into submission. Similarly, I follow the song. It will come to me if I let it stay open. I respect itâI donât need to be the God of it.
1st 3: So when they come to you, the songs, how do you record them?
E: Theyâre all different. Sometimes I can be walking down the street and I just start singing. Like with âJesus, Love This Tired Womanâ; I had just dropped my son off at school and I hadnât been sleeping; I was exhausted. As soon as I walked out of school, I literally started singing it like I knew it already. By the time I got home it was almost like a hymn, a mantra; and as I got inside I just had to grab my guitar and write it down. Itâs a gift, you know, when that happens. And I donât mean Iâm gifted; I just mean Iâve been given a gift. Itâs lovely.
1st 3: Do you still play the âcello?
E: I donât, because I live in a tiny apartment in Greenwichâ340 square feet! All four of us, no upstairs, a hound dog, thirty guitarsâand Sylviaâs boyfriend often stays over! I moved in 34 years ago, just me, my pug, and the guitars. At that point, I was never getting married or having kids. Thereâs an energy there in my house.
1st 3: And has your music, your voice, changed over the years? Did it change after you became a mother?
E: Yes itâs changed, but Iâve never liked my voice. Iâve always called myself a songwriter, never a singer. I think Iâve got an interesting voice and maybe itâs getting a bit more gravelly and resonantâbut Iâve done 11 gigs in a row and I might be missing a few top notes!
I love creative people and every time I find something new itâs like a treasure."
Emily Duff
1st 3: What do you write about? Do your songs reflect your life stages?
E: I write about everything! Everything comes from a different place. You donât think that the human heart could get any bigger, that youâd have the capacity to love or feel any more because itâs a physiological thing and your heart is just this bigâbut then you have children and you just burn brighter. Your desire to be present grows. For exampleâI wrote âHallelujah Helloâ which is a gospel song. I was born Jewish. But my daughter is seven years old and sheâs sitting in this little portable dog washing bowl that sits in the shower, and Iâm cleaning up after dinner, and she starts âBringing in the Sheavesâ and I say, âSylvia, how do you know that song?â She says, âLittle House on the Prairieâand why donât we go to church?â I explain that weâre Jewish and she says, âNo, youâre Jewish but Daddyâs not and I want to go to church.â And that started a period when Sylvia became really connected with our Episcopalian neighborhood church. So then I started going, and I fell in love with itâand then I became a member of the church, and became what I call a âJew-discopalianâ!
1st 3: A bit like your songwriting! Thatâs youâa lovely rich mixture. Whose music are you excited about at the moment?
E: Everybodyâs music! I love creative people and every time I find something new itâs like a treasure. There are three girls in a band in NYC, theyâre young, Iâve known them since they were 14/15 and theyâre killing it! Theyâre called Hello Mary. I had them over to my house a while ago and added acoustic instruments to their sound. They are a rock band, touring all over the world now with a manager and a label! Iâm specifically excited about every single young woman who picks up a guitar, and who wants to write about her experiences. I will help anyone. I will give her a guitar and extend every courtesy.
We all make our own happiness."

1st 3: Where has it come from, all of that love? Do you think you were born with it? Do you think your Grandmother gave it to you?
E: No, I had to make it on my own. I think I just became really used to producing on demand.
1st 3: And knowing that you had to make your own happiness?
E: We all make our own happiness.
1st 3: Maybe not a lot of people realize that. And sometimes people that had a tougher start find it harder. But not you.
E: No!
1st 3: Youâve got it allâthe cute kids, the cute husband, the West Village apartment⊠have you got any life goals left?
E: Iâm just going to see where I go⊠I would like to get back into riding horses! I miss horses. And my mum⊠sheâs had some health problems, so Iâm going to go to help her. You only have one mum. She might not have been able to be a mum to me when I needed her, but that was because of other things.
1st 3: It seems you have a huge capacity to love and forgive, and to infuse others with joy.
E: We all have. Itâs inside every one of us.

Reverend Elvis and the Undead Syncopators – It Was Written On The Toilet Wall
The new Reverend Elvis and the Undead Syncopators LP will be released on September 9th on Suzy Q Records. It will be available in black vinyl and on all known streaming platforms. Real music from real people deep from the soul.
If you are somewhat unfamiliar with the work of the Reverend, we stumbled upon this scrawl on a dirty toilet wall, duly noted down for future reference. It may not be factual; it was very dark, and we were very high…
“Reverend Elvis and the Undead Syncopators slither forth from the foggy depths of Chemnitz, Germany, conjuring a wicked brew of “death country”, “psychobilly”, and “satanic gospel”. Led by the enigmatic Andreas E. Freier, alias Reverend Elvis, their sonic sĂ©ance defies convention with a stripped-down, spectral sound that echoes through haunted juke joints and desolate highways alike. Whether he’s channeling alone or with the Undead Syncopators, anchored by the relentless D. Shadow on the upright bass, Reverend Elvis commands the stage in a spectral shroud, casting a spell that blurs the line between preacher and prowler.
Beyond the stage, Reverend Elvis is a renegade of the underground, a vinyl junkie turned sonic alchemist who once tried to tame the chaos in a doomed record store venture. Now, adorned in the sacred mask of rebellion, he spins tales of cosmic despair and rebel yells against the mundane. His musicâraw, relentless, and dripping with midnight sweatâtranscends mere genre, beckoning lost souls to dance in the moonlight and make peace with the shadows.
Reverend Elvis and his Undead Syncopators are the unholy grail of sonic necromancy, beckoning you to join their wild ride through the haunted backroads of musical madness.”
The writing on the wall ended with ‘Your Mum sucks off tramps’ – to this day we have no idea how that mystery author could have known that…..
In an interview for that dirty old rag, Trebuchet Magazine – Reverend Elvis once stated: âThere are two kinds of gigs. Normal gigs and weird gigs, I hate normal gigs.â
You know what to do you filthy ghouls – go take care of business at Suzy Q Records
