Soccer Mommy – A Different Touch
Soccer Mommy, the musical project of beloved Nashville songwriter and musician Sophie Allison, announces her staggering new album Evergreen today.
Allison began her career as a teenager, sharing music on Bandcamp in near-demo form. Recent years have found her enjoying synthesizers and experimental production, thanks to endless studio resources newly at her fingertips. But when Allison wrote the songs for Evergreen, she knew they called for a different touch.
Songwriting has always been Allison’s way to sort through life and ground herself, so – as she crafted this album in the wake of a profound and personal loss – it felt important to keep these songs raw and relatable, unvarnished and honest. By opting for more organic production and shining a spotlight on her songwriting, Allison did just that. The result is Evergreen, a sonic return to Soccer Mommy’s roots, but recast on a cinematic scale with the help of acoustic guitars, lush strings and flutes. Nothing overindulgent, everything real.
Evergreen was made by Allison in Atlanta’s Maze Studios with producer Ben H. Allen III (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Youth Lagoon, Belle and Sebastian), and will be released on October 25th via Loma Vista Recordings.
The 11 track Evergreen animates Allison’s experience with loss through soundscapes that can conjure a sad-eyed daydream or an ecstatic weekend escape. On new single ‘M,’ which follows the previously-released album opener ‘Lost,’ Allison sings to shadows and ghosts. She recognizes that staying so devoted to something that’s gone could be a problem, but for right now, it’s the best she’s got. Listen to the single and watch its Anna Pollack-directed music video below.
Soccer Mommy will perform at All Things Go Festival in both NYC and DC in September, as well Levitation Festival in Austin this November. See full dates here.
Sophie Allison has always written candidly about her life, making Soccer Mommy one of indie rock’s most interesting and beloved artists of the last decade. Allison has used Soccer Mommy’s songs as a vehicle to sort through the thoughts and encounters that inevitably come with the reality of growing up. After all, Soccer Mommy began as a bedroom-to-Bandcamp exercise with teenage Allison posting her plaintive songs as demos. Over the years, though, she has often enhanced that sound, using the endless production possibilities, newly at her fingertips, to outstrip singer-songwriter stereotypes. The records would start with songwriting’s kernels of truth, and she would then imagine all the unexpected shapes they could take. Every Soccer Mommy record has felt like a surprise.
On Soccer Mommy’s fourth album, the tender but resolute Evergreen, Allison is again writing about her life. But that life’s different these days: Since making her previous album, 2022’s Sometimes, Forever, Allison experienced a profound and also very personal loss. New songs emerged from that change, unflinching and sometimes even funny reflections on what she was feeling. (Speaking of funny, this is a Soccer Mommy album, so there’s an ode to Allison’s purple-haired wife in the game Stardew Valley, too.) These songs were, once again, Allison’s way to sort through life, to ground herself. She wanted them to sound that way, too, to feel as true to the demos—raw and relatable, unvarnished and honest—as possible. The songwriting would again lead where the production would follow.
Evergreen is the absorbing result, an 11-track seesaw of articulate feeling that suggests Allison is driving you through the streets of her native Nashville, the Tennessee sun bright as she plays you a tape of songs she cut to document those very dark days. The mission for the album was to take life’s moments, frame them without obfuscating the emotional burdens or gifts that anchored them, and to let the lyrics and moods speak for themselves. Allison rendezvoused in Atlanta with producer Ben H. Allen III and told him she wanted to elide synthesizers and digital flourishes this time, favouring acoustic guitars, rich drums, and interweaving flutes. They built basic tracks for half the album as a pair in Allen’s Maze Studios before ushering in her touring band to add more. There were real flutes and real strings, just as Allison had imagined. As the layers and ideas mounted, Allen and Allison focused on peeling them back, on leaving subtle touches that never crowded the sentiments. The songs retain the spirit of the demos, candid and direct.
Allison assembled Evergreen as she crept into her late 20s, that tenuous time where the travails of adulthood suddenly look much closer than the playground of childhood. And during the three-year span since finishing Sometimes, Forever and beginning Evergreen, Allison learned loss is not a monolith. Some days are brutal and others are beautiful, as you take what you have gained from someone who is no longer here and try to carry it ahead, a talisman for whatever may come. “She cannot fade/She is so evergreen,” Allison sings in the devastating but strangely affirming title finale, strings sighing beneath the brush of her acoustic guitar. It feels like a lucid note to self. And that, after all, is where these songs started—Allison, writing songs for herself that documented what it was she was going through, just as she’s always done.
Mass of Amara – Flexing Some Muscle
Melodic/Progressive Metal band, Mass of Amara, recently released new EP, Through The Ether.
The EP features a muscular sound, punctuated by supreme low-end and a heavy guitar crunch, seamlessly fused with lilting melodies and lush atmospherics, all wrapped up in a progressive compositional package!
The band had this to say about Through The Ether:
“This is our second full EP release, which consists of five tracks, including the interlude “The Ether,” which serves as the intro to closer, “Storm.” The lyrics were written by our vocalist Ella, who explores reactions to life’s problems and occurrences; those we sometimes don’t feel prepared to face, but we arrive at the right moment to help us grow and keep moving forward. Sometimes it’s hard to cope with certain emotions and the best way to power through is to express them by letting ourselves feel and analyze what is going on inside our heads. The inspiration behind the EP title, Through the Ether, is derived from the infinite unconscious that we can tap into in a time when we are ready to heal a part of ourselves, as well as to acquire information about what we are capable of.”
The band also released a guitar playthrough video for the song at youtu.be/IZl6AM-HyJE
Mass of Amara (MOA) is a melodic progressive metal band from San Antonio, Texas and was founded by Ella Rosario and Preston Hexx in 2021. MOA released their first single “Army of Me” in 2022, along with a music video. Our first EP was released in 2022 as well consisting of 3 tracks. Band members Joseph Briones (drums) and Victor King (guitar) then joined in 2022, with the final addition of guitarist Joshua Guerra in 2023. Two singles, “Rebirth” and “Revelations” were
released in 2023 while the band was recording Through the Ether.
The band completed their first performance in December 2023, and since then have been performing all over central Texas, gaining a lot of traction in the process.
Through the Ether was released in June of 2024 and marks an
updated sound for the band as they pushed themselves to create a unique sound. The EP combines more progressive and atmospheric elements, giving MOA a more distinct sound that leaves a powerful statement on their audience.

Suzanna Choffel – Finding A Sweet Spot
“It’s fitting that ‘My Words’ is the first single from my new album since chronologically, it’s the first song I wrote from this collection,” describes Austin native singer/songwriter Suzanna Choffel on the new single from her forthcoming album Bird By Bird set for release on September 27, 2024.
“My three-year-old daughter’s constant adorable chatter surrounded me,” she explains about the origin of the song. “I was constantly writing down her new words and cute phrases… a new mama taken with her darling child,” Choffel continues, “One night, I sat down and ‘My Words’ came out of me.”
For Choffel, the idea of facing potentially overwhelming situations by breaking them into smaller parts resonated on many levels, from addressing anxiety to recording her album. Not only was Bird By Bird created in sections, but she says it also, “felt like putting pieces of me into a collection that paints the picture of my life these past six or seven years.”
When she recorded her last album, Hello Goodbye, Choffel was pregnant with her first daughter. Now a mother of two, she’s viewing life from the perspective of someone dealing with the ups and downs of parenthood, a long-term romantic partnership, her music career, and being the host of her own radio show on Austin-based Sun Radio.
She knew she needed to step away from her daily routine to get in the zone for this one. She also wanted to work with producer and longtime friend Davíd Garza, who had just become a father and was staying close to home in L.A. She booked a flight; he called drummer Amy Wood and bassist Sebastian Steinberg, who had co-produced Fiona Apple’s GRAMMY® -winning album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, with him.
“David suggested I turn the last verse/chorus into a bit of a party,” Choffel explains. “The song starts with me reflecting nostalgically on the days when I was alone and had all the time in the world for my words, then moves into the present day of being mesmerized by my child’s words.”
The value of fundamental interactions comes through in the summer-party ambiance of “My Words,” for which Choffel and Garza filled the studio with friends, instilling a feel-good atmosphere with its breezy dance-pop/hip-hop groove. It’s like the icing on the cake when she laughs at the song’s end.

“Recording the last verse was a fun and spontaneous add-on in the studio where I decided to speak instead of sing, something I’ve wanted to play with more. I used to perform spoken word (slam poetry) back in my college days and was a bit of a hip-hop head. So, it was fun to bring that vibe to this song, especially since it was so specifically about words. We even created a party. If you listen closely, you can hear me and some friends clinking glasses and laughing behind my words.”
With Bird By Bird, Choffel finds a noirish sweet spot and hits a new creative peak, segueing from her love of ’80s pop to smoky jazz grooves on which she channels her inner Peggy Lee. “I believe she is truly the voice of Austin,” Garza gushed in a recent interview. “I hope that with this album, folks worldwide will get hip to her artistry.” She’s “graceful” and yet, as Rolling Stone asserts, possessing “all the vibe in the world.”
“My Words” was released July 30, 2024. It was produced by David Garza, who also added guitar and piano. It features Amy Wood (drums) and Sebastian Steinberg (bass). Bird By Bird will be released on September 27, 2024.

Hello Mary – Ripping Into Prominence
NYC’s Hello Mary – Helena Straight, Stella Wave, and Mikaela Oppenheimer – recently announced the September 13 release of their new album Emita Ox via Frenchkiss Records.
They also shared the single “Three,” a song that evokes the fairy tale of a young girl named Emita and her pet ox. Today they return with the official video for “Three” directed by Mark Cheche.
The clip premiered via Paste with the band telling them “We saw other stuff that Mark worked on and thought his animation style was really cool. After hearing ‘three’ he came to us with a concept for the video and we loved it! It was fun to have a clear plot for a music video, especially for this song.” Cheche shares, “When I heard three it immediately became one of my favourite songs, and I felt honoured to get to work with such a dynamic and talented band”.
Emita Ox will mark the follow-up to Hello Mary’s acclaimed 2023 self-titled LP, which Rolling Stone called one of the year’s “sharpest, noisiest debuts.” Since its release the band have ripped into prominence with their fuzzed-out anthems, establishing a darkly playful edge all their own. Possessing a sound that pushes harder into heavy distortion and psychedelic dreamscapes, the new LP sees Hello Mary building out their singular universe of gutsy, virtuosic alt-rock. The band co-produced the album alongside Alex Farrar (MJ Lenderman, Indigo De Souza, Wednesday, Snail Mail) in Asheville, NC.

Hello Mary have been clocked many miles on the road, supporting the likes of Silversun Pickups (who have invited the band on the road multiple times this past year), American Football and more. This summer they’ll make their UK debut playing a smattering of festival dates including End Of The Road, Manchester Psych Fest, and Edinburgh Psych Fest. This will be followed by two London headline dates, at the newly announced 4th September show at The Shacklewell Arms and Brixton’s iconic The Windmill. Hello Mary culminates their UK inauguration with a run of shows as main support for American Football. The trio have also announced a Fall of North America with dates kicking off October 4 in Seattle, WA and concluding November 2 in Houston, TX They play at Los Angeles’ Troubadour on October 10 and New York City’s Bowery Ballroom on October 24. Additionally, the band is confirmed for Las Vegas’ Best Friends Forever Fest on October 11 – 13 and Austin’s Levitation Festival on November 3. All shows are listed below and tickets are available here.
On Emita Ox, Hello Mary push harder into heavy distortion and psychedelic dreamscapes, as they build out their singular universe of gutsy strain of rock. The LP’s labyrinthine production reflects how the band’s musical tastes have expanded from Elliott Smith and Radiohead to encompass experimental post-rock acts like Black Midi and Swans. “This album encompasses a lot of our inspirations,” says Oppenheimer. “It also shows what we’re like as a trio, collectively.”
The project reveals the band levelling up as musicians and composers. Recorded in early 2024 in Asheville, North Carolina, the band played all the instruments on Emita Ox and produced it alongside Alex Farrar (Indigo De Souza, Wednesday, Snail Mail). The members’ contributions to the songwriting and production bleed into each other, but the album is a showcase of their individual strengths: Straight’s ethereal vocal melodies and gritty guitar riffs, Wave’s emotive vocals and knotty drum patterns, and Oppenheimer’s diabolical basslines and experimentation with electronic production. “We map out all the sections beforehand, we like to write intricate parts that complement each other,” says Wave.
Featuring songs that span from 2018 to 2023, Emita Ox is also a document of Hello Mary’s past five years together growing up as bandmates and their arrival into young adulthood. First meeting as teenagers in 2019, the band became fast friends through the pandemic—a global crisis that made coming of age feel even more weighty and complicated. “This album represents a period of time that’s very meaningful to us. The songs are related to things that we all know about, even if it’s not out on the table for everyone else,” Wave explains. “The songwriting and recording process was a very heavy time that I will never forget.” Even if the lyrics touch on serious topics, the band maintains a core sense of play and exploration: jamming is their way of working through these feelings in a way that’s “easy and fun,” Straight says.
Created amid these emotions of frustration and camaraderie, Emita Ox sees Hello Mary ruthlessly diving into a thrilling sound of catharsis. On “0%,” Wave launches into piercing screams for the first time. Oppenheimer says that her bandmate’s intense shrieks “makes the song full of energy and really exciting to play,” especially in the song’s breakdown which ends in a cacophony of noise and vibraphone. Meanwhile, “Down My Life,” which Straight says she wrote after “one of the saddest experiences” of her life, features her angelic vowels on top of warped piano and menacing bass. The band even veers towards prog-rock on songs like “Footstep Misstep,” where complex instrumentation and Wave’s dynamic vocals evoke a world in between fantasy and nightmare.
The LP’s title, Emita Ox, is referenced in “Three,” whose lyrics sound plucked from a fairy tale. “‘Three’ was written after I’d been in a creative rut that lasted a couple months,” says Straight. “I wasn’t focused on getting any message across. My intention was just to write a full song, whether I ended up liking it or not.” Though it doesn’t have an intended meaning, the imagery of the girl Emita and her ox is fitting for the band: Oxes are strong and resilient, and much of Emita Ox’s subject matter reveals Hello Mary’s perseverance, as they choose to move through life’s burdens instead of getting beaten down by them. But oxes are also dependable—much like how they see each other and their relationship. “There’s the lyric that goes, ‘Woke to the hands of three/Stitching and fixing me,’” Wave says to Straight, quoting her own words back to her. “I always picture me and Mikaela with you.” It’s a testament to how they’ve witnessed each other’s heartaches and mended each other back up—through their music and their friendship.
