THEN COMES SILENCE – Keeping Things Strange

‘Stay Strange’ is a song included on ‘Trickery’, the magnificent seventh album by Swedish post-punk/goth trio Then Comes Silence.

Also home to the singles ‘Ride Or Die’ and ‘Like A Hammer’, plus several other future anthems, the record has been collecting accolades worldwide and seen the group favourably compared to late ‘70s/early ‘80s dark rock overlords such as Joy Division, Bauhaus and Killing Joke, as well as compatriots The Leather Nun

“‘Stay Strange!’ is the call that Dusty Gannon of [US post-punk band] Vision Video shouts after every show,” explains TCS frontman Alex Svenson of the song’s chorus chant ‘Stay strange and pure at heart’. “When we returned home from our last tour with them, I began working on the song and made it a tribute to the post-punk/goth scene. It was also a natural choice to invite Dusty to sing the chorus.”

Then Comes Silence are back out on tour now with an autumn schedule that includes shows in Germany, Belgium, France, Sweden, Denmark and Spain, plus UK shows in early November in London and Whitby (Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival).

Bill Leeb – Who Wants To Play

Bill Leeb is the Vancouver-based musician and mastermind behind electro-industrial scene mainstays Front Line Assembly and ambient-pop duo Delerium, as well as a key member of recording projects that include Noise Unit, Intermix and Cyberaktif.

Leeb has today issued a brand new video for a song entitled ‘Muted Obsession’. Included on his debut solo album, ‘Model Kollapse’, which is out 13th September, the track is the second lifted from the record to feature Shannon Hemmett of ACTORS, who are also based in Leeb’s home city.

Leeb says of the track: “The perception between fantasy and reality. How far would you go in this virtual social world we have created? Are we truly all alone? Who wants to play?”

‘Model Kollapse’ marks the first solo venture by this sonic chameleon and creative trailblazer since the mid-80s days of Front Line Assembly, when Leeb began making recordings in his bedroom and released them on limited edition cassette format. Almost four decades on, this new album was recorded and produced in Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles with assistance from production duo Dream Bullet and long-term recording cohort Rhys Fulber, plus regular mixing engineer Greg Reely.

The songs ‘Terror Forms’ (also featuring Hemmett) VIDEO and ‘Demons’ VIDEO have already been released as singles prior to the album.

Hard-edged yet melodic, danceable and very much song rather than soundscape-driven, ‘Model Kollapse’ carries traces of post-punk electronic dance music pioneers such as DAF, Front 242 and Skinny Puppy (of whom Leeb was an original member), as well as his own oeuvre. However, it also displays the influence that acts like these have had on latter day artists such as Gesaffelstein and ADULT., plus much of what has in recent years become known as darkwave.

The term Model Collapse refers to a phenomena in artificial intelligence where trained models, especially those relying on synthetic data or AI-generated data, eventually degrade over time. Leeb posits the notion that “as we forge forward on an unprecedented technological scale, it makes me wonder how much longer we can remain in control of various aspects of our lives. Automation has already taken over many industries. With technology running much of the world, will the entire planet eventually be vulnerable to a Model Kollapse? Chaos would surely ensue.”

Leeb also acknowledges the role that Metropolis Records has played in his recording career since the late 1990s, stating that the company “is one of the most important for alternative music on the planet. This album was made possible by my long-term friendship with label boss Dave Heckman, who continually supported my projects, allowing complete artistic freedom.” Heckman died in the summer of 2022.

HEATHEN APOSTLES (Live Review) – Sailing Into Hell

Have you laid eyes on the Heathen Apostles before? Neither had I, so I tightened my corset and braced for the spectacle as The Lexington’s stage morphed into a grand theater. The band took their places, ready to unleash their storm.

For a bewildering moment, I wondered if a mistake had been made and that we were all about to see a production of The Crucible…

But then the music starts, and all thoughts of justice governed by fear, prejudice, and suspicion are banished by the powerful chemistry and musical genius that fills the air.

Dimly lit and serious-faced, with an intensity so fierce it sends shivers down the spine, the crew aboard this storm-tossed vessel of sound is a force to be reckoned with. Mather Louth, captain of this weather-beaten Gothic Americana ship, commands the stage with vocals that pierce through the fog like a cutlass through the thickest of sails. Her voice guides us through seas of murderous balladry, the brooding lyrics and intricate instrumentation flowing with the ease of a ship slicing through dark, tempestuous waters. Their genre-bending style is as unpredictable as the high seas, each song a rogue wave crashing with elegance and power.

Amidst it all, the violinist—our ship’s smiling rogue—grins through the storm, his playing as sharp as any rapier blade. And smile he should, for his skill is nothing short of staggering. With a call from Louth—“How y’all doing, London?”—the ship sails into “Death’s Head,” and Louth, trading her well-worn guitar for a bodhrán, spins a tale of love turned sour and a stolen heart, the tremolo percussive beat building into a magnificent, macabre crescendo.

Strings fly off the fiddle, fingers a blur of fury and speed. Mather announces that their seventh album, The In Between, has just been unleashed upon the world. The crowd—many dressed in their own interpretations of Gothic Americana, a right old bunch of gothic buccaneers, some with no hair, others with long hair flowing, hats tipped just so, and a few even adorned with a small skull or two—respond with hearty cheers, fully enraptured. In no time, they’re under a spell, completely connected to the rhythm.

The hoedown intro of “Capital T” was led by the alluring violinist Luis Mascaro, whose bow dances with the finesse of a master swordsman. “Shadow of the Crows” follows, with Thomas Lorioux’s heavily percussive bass laying a thunderous foundation, while the fiendish fiddle once again steals the show. Chopper Franklin, the old salt of the six strings, dazzles with guitar virtuosity, blending genres with the grace of a seasoned navigator. Oh, Chopper, you’ve still got it, you old Cramp!

Mather Louth remains pale and composed throughout, a serene figurehead in the face of the storm, her intensity building with each song as she steers through waves of relentless violin and pounding bass. We briefly ponder how “Can Your Pussy Do The Dog?” might sound with this instrumentation, as Franklin whips out his mandolin—legendary in its own right—and adds a shimmering depth to the stellar set, which includes crowd favorites like “In the Blood” and “Roots Run Deep.” Caught in this riptide of sound and emotion, the crowd stands spellbound.

Haunting melodies shift effortlessly between key signatures, evoking tales of uncertainty and introspection, like a compass spinning wildly in the eye of a storm. These songs are a battle between catharsis and raw emotion, pulling us deeper into the heart of the night.

Louth’s mesmerizing voice and the intricate musicianship of the entire crew transport us to the mystical shores of raw Gothic Americana. The interplay between the musicians is like the synchronized pull of sails in the wind, adding richness and depth to their sound. As they cast their final heave-ho with an up-tempo drinking song (isn’t every song a drinking song?), the lights blaze and The Lexington is bathed in the murderously optimistic energy of their storytelling.

We sail happily toward the gates of hell, and it feels glorious.

Jenny Don’t and the Spurs – Riling Up The Cow Pokes

Based in the US Northwest, Jenny Don’t and the Spurs have spent over a decade building a global reputation as hard-working stalwarts of the Country Western scene, with dynamic music that also acknowledges their roots in garage rock and cowpunk.

The ’Spurs are currently touring the US to promote their fourth album, ‘Broken Hearted Blue’, which was released in June 2024 (Fluff And Gravy Records).

They will arrive in mainland Europe at the beginning of October for a packed six week schedule, followed by further dates in their home territory. They will then visit the UK in February 2025, with fourteen confirmed shows already on their itinerary.

The ‘Spurs attracted significant attention in 2023 when their Alt Country chart topping album ‘Fire On The Ridge’ was issued in the UK to excellent reviews ahead of a successful tour. Domestically, the year also saw them win the coveted ‘Outlaw Group’ award at Dale Watson’s Ameripolitan Award Ceremony held in Memphis, before they captivated audiences on an Australian tour that included a performance at the Out On The Weekend Fest.

‘Broken Hearted Blue’ presents ten dynamic new songs on an album that asserts itself as a standout on the scene, with its high-octane rockin’ delivery setting it apart from the herd. From the thunderous bassline of the instrumental ‘Sidewinder’ to the infectious melody of ‘Unlucky Love’, reminiscent of Lee Hazlewood’s ‘60s style, each song possesses its own distinct charm while seamlessly upholding the album’s western essence.

Produced by Collin Hegna (Brian Jonestown Massacre, Federale), the album stands as a testament to his meticulous craftsmanship and guidance in helping the band to create a musical tapestry that highlights the talents of each member.

The Get Up Kids – Something Like A Real Band

The Get Up Kids recently digitally released their 25th-anniversary reissue of their genre-defining sophomore LP Something to Write Home About via Polyvinyl Record Co.

Newly remastered by Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound, the original album and a second LP–containing a mix of 12 rare or previously unreleased demos, including the four-track acoustic recordings by Matt Pryor–are out now at all streaming services.

Its physical edition, due out on September 20th, features an expanded 28-page large format full-colour booklet with handwritten lyrics, photos, and more.

Still amid a US tour, the Kansas City band of Pryor (guitar/vocals), Rob Pope (bass), Jim Suptic (guitar/vocals), Ryan Pope (drums), and Dustin Kinsey (keys), today announce a UK and EU run of dates in celebration of the Something To Write Home About‘s 25th anniversary. A full itinerary is listed below and tickets are on sale on Monday 16th September at 10am BST.

The band were featured on the July cover of UPSET magazine, and received praise from Pitchfork, Stereogum and Brooklyn Vegan for the anniversary edition of the album, also made podcast appearances on The Record is Repeating and The Brooklyn Vegan Podcast, where they discuss behind-the-scenes stories while creating the fated LP.

“Our first record is what it is—its imperfections are one of the things that people like about it,” says Pryor. “But I personally wanted us to record something that sounded like a real band, that sounded professional and, you know, big.” Working for the first time with Chad Blinman, who co-produced Something to Write Home About with Alex Brahl at LA’s Mad Hatter studio, The Get Up Kids achieved the massive sound they sought. The 12-track LP saw a quick release on September 28^th, 1999, mere months after their stint in the studio, and emerged into a rock landscape dominated by commercial rock, post-grunge, and nü-metal. “Nothing that was popular sounded like our album,” says Suptic. “That style of music wasn’t mainstream.” Yet the album, along with fellow 1999 releases like Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity and the Promise Ring’s Very Emergency, solidified a canon of expansive, pop-leaning emo that would guide the genre’s explosion in the new millennium, and go on to inspire platinum-selling bands like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, as well as wave upon wave of emo revival acts.

But Something to Write Home About’s success wasn’t limited to its immeasurable influence. It also positioned Vagrant, which would later add emo luminaries like Saves the Day and Dashboard Confessional to its roster, as the genre’s preeminent label. It also led to the band’s opening slots for Green Day and Weezer, and sold-out shows across a two-year headline tour that, by its end, had pushed the album’s Billboard Heatseekers chart summit to #31 and its unit sales into six figures (a rarity for an indie record in the late ‘90s).

In both the early drafts and remastered tracks contained on Something to Write Home About (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition), longtime fans will return to places familiar and formative, and rediscover plenty of moments as vivid as they were on first listen. For The Get Up Kids, these demos also have the same transportative quality as the finished album, warping them right back to downtown Kansas City and the five-story decommissioned ROTC training facility that — for $100 a month — served as their practice space. “When I hear those particular demos,” says Rob Pope, “it takes me right back to that rehearsal room.”

Allison began her career as a teenager, sharing music on Bandcamp in near-demo form. Recent years have found her enjoying synthesizers and experimental production, thanks to endless studio resources newly at her fingertips. But when Allison wrote the songs for Evergreen, she knew they called for a different touch. Songwriting has always been Allison’s way to sort through life and ground herself, so – as she crafted this album in the wake of a profound and personal loss – it felt important to keep these songs raw and relatable, unvarnished and honest. By opting for more organic production and shining a spotlight on her songwriting, Allison did just that. The result is Evergreen, a sonic return to Soccer Mommy’s roots, but recast on a cinematic scale with the help of acoustic guitars, lush strings and flutes. Nothing overindulgent, everything real.

Evergreen was made by Allison in Atlanta’s Maze Studios with producer Ben H. Allen III (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Youth Lagoon, Belle and Sebastian), and will be released on October 25th via Loma Vista Recordings.

FREYA BEER – Better Not Be Flaky

With Jekyll and Hyde-like arrangements, that veer from Beabadoobee-esque bubblegum/pop to blistering Garbage-style grunge/rock in the thump of a heartbeat; the single arrives as a thrilling curve-ball from London’s rising Gothic-pop chanteuse.

With a subject matter as deceiving as its devious melodies, Freya says of “False Hope”: ““False Hope” is about coming across individuals who promise the world to you but fail to present. It’s a song about picking yourself up after you come across ‘flaky’ characters.”

Recorded in Colchester, the track is Freya’s latest collaboration with producer Tom Donovan, notable for his work with Miles Kane.

“False Hope” swiftly follows Freya’s recent 4-track EP release ‘Tatianna’ (out now on vinyl and digital – pre-order the EP here), and follows a summer of festival dates at the likes of Y-NOT Festival and FYA Festival.

Making 2024 her own, Freya supported punk poet Dr John Cooper-Clarke on his spoken word tour around the UK, with Beer receiving the unique opportunity to perform her own poetry at the iconic London Palladium. More recently she appeared in the fashion magazine, Hunger, and was photographed by the iconic Rankin.

StrateJacket – In The Groove

Northern California’s favorite alt-rock/pop punk trio StrateJacket are thrilled to share their lyric video for newest single “Dreamcatcher.”

Taken from the band’s debut album (Bad Start out on October 11, 2024 via EDGEOUT), the lyric video follows the band’s newly released videos for “Bad Start” and “End of Time” and arrives ahead of their headline shows in Texas, Louisiana, and Arizona later this month.

Having been inspired by The Wombats song “Moving To New York,” Jackson Roemers (lead vocals/guitar) says he wanted to get “more interesting” with the chords they were using and he ended up with this progression. “I really liked the jangle pop vibe of the riff and wanted to do something a little different than the stuff we did on the rest of the album,” he says. “There’s more of a groove in this song and it doesn’t come off as angry as some of our other ones tend to. Add in Fabian’s [Angel, vocals/bass] killer bass line and you get this little ditty.” The band – comprised of Roemers, Angel, and Nate Mangold (drums) – is still in their early twenties and embraces this youthful energy for the hopelessly romantic song.

The band’s upcoming debut album Bad Start follows their newly released self-titled EP StrateJacket and features singles like the shout-at-the-heavens title track “Bad Start” (originally featured on EA Sports’ NHL24 Soundtrack in tandem with NHL24’s Playlist last year), the ultra-melodic “Be My Drug,” and the previous single “End of Time,” all of which overflow with dark humor and contain the sort of electric energy that has hyper-charged the Bay Area’s punk and alternative scenes for decades.

StrateJacket’s journey to Bad Start has been marked by unwavering determination, even during the darkest days of the pandemic lockdown. Unsure when they’d play another gig or if they would secure a record deal or make an album, they persevered. Yet, they maintained optimism and hope, overcoming every obstacle. Their resilience has seen them grow from humble Bay Area venues to playing at prestigious festivals like SXSW, Welcome to Rockville, and Omaha’s KIWR’s Summer Bash in 2024. The band is slated to do a round of headline shows in September before their performance at Aftershock Festival in Sacramento on October 10 and following the festival they’ll be joining up with Ten Years for a handful of supporting dates along the west coast portion of their tour. Looking back at StrateJacket’s origins, it’s clear they didn’t get such a bad start after all.

StrateJacket recorded the album at Vancouver’s Armoury Studios in November of 2022. They worked with the Juno/BMI-winning Canadian producer/songwriter Brian Howes (Hinder, Skillet, Boys Like Girls) to bring their vision to life. The band also secured Grammy® winning Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, Muse, Prince) to mix the tunes, ensuring a high-quality sound that matches their musical ambitions.

StrateJacket’s debut album, Bad Start, will be released on October 11, 2024 via EDGEOUT/UMG/UMe. The band’s lyric video for “Dreamcatcher” is out NOW.

Berlin-based darkwave act Night Nail have released a remix album entitled ‘Fates Remade’.

A track-by-track remodelling of their 2023 studio album, ‘Fates Explained’, it features remixes from a tour de force line-up of current Post-Punk and Darkwave creatives that include Bestial Mouths, Bedless Bones, A State of Flux, Kill Shelter, Gianmarco Silvetti, iamnoone, Antipole (produced by Pedro Code of IAMTHESHADOW), The Neuro Farm, A Cloud of Ravens, VV & The Void and ROKI.

Formed in Los Angeles and fronted by Brandon Robert, Night Nail debuted in 2014 with a self-titled EP before issuing the albums ‘LA Demons’ (2018) and ‘March To Autumn’ (2020). Eventually relocating to Germany, the group signed to Metropolis Records to release ‘Fates Explained’ in late 2023, followed by the archival set ‘Early Demons and Demos (10th Year Anniversary Edition)’ in June 2024.

In regard to ‘Fates Remade’, Robert states: “it was exciting to make because it took every ounce of faith I had to trust in the process, the contributing artist and the final remix. Relinquishing control was the hardest part, but they had to trust me, too. The rewards came from this trust and you can hear it in the songs.”
