40 Watt Sun (Live Review) – A Soothing Tide
40 Watt Sun starts with Colours, a voice that shimmers like a dream, each note fingerpicked with a quiet, reassuring grace.
The melody unfolds gently, weaving through the air in a delicate, almost hypnotic embrace. Its simplicity is its strength—each sparse note lingers with poignant familiarity, a beauty born from restraint. There’s a quiet elegance in its minimalism, an aching tenderness that feels like home.
His guitar rings out with a rich, mellow tone, weaving classical notes with a timeless style. Folk and country slides dance softly through echoey acoustics, warm and bold, embracing the air with gentle power.
The audience at The Lexington is utterly spellbound, enveloped in a ‘close and holy darkness,’ a sacred stillness that binds hearts and minds alike.
Patrick Walker's vocal prowess cuts through the silence, stalling time as he sings of love's longing and its solace.'
Pour Your Love, a standout track from his recently released album Little Weight, is a hauntingly beautiful offering. The poignant lyric, “Cool me in a love I can see through…pour your love on top of me”, resonates deeply, weaving an emotional spell over the audience. Absorbed by the powerful words, they find themselves immersed in an atmosphere of raw intensity and profound stillness. Patrick Walker’s vocal prowess cuts through the silence, stalling time as he sings of love’s longing and its solace. In his call for it to “Close me in the folds of your peace”, souls are stilled, and hearts are touched.

There is a juxtaposition between the mesmeric intensity of 40 Watt Sun’s performance, the potency and substance of his singing and the submissive admiration of the audience. You can feel the adoration pulsing.
40 Watt Sun is famously unbound by a setlist (he never uses one), instead inviting the crowd to share their requests. Bruce, a devoted superfan stationed directly in front of him all evening, had both requests and guitar picks ready to offer. Such was the beauty of the evening that it stirred a collective yearning—didn’t we all wish we had a plectrum at hand, so we too might contribute to this gentle and unexpectedly stirring exposition of music?
Behind My Eyes (a song three years in the making, yet he confesses he still can’t remember the words) – Among the crowd, eyes close in serene bliss, swept away by the hypnotic cadence of fingerpicking. With only thumb and forefinger as his tools—how can so many notes cascade so effortlessly?—the melody weaves through us, a soothing tide. Above it all, his legato sung notes ascend, soaring, lingering, wrapping the room in their embrace.
warmth, simplicity, and instinctive spontaneity are masterfully underpinned by raw vulnerability and a deep, authentic emotion."
Pitch shifts, guitars swap and re-tune, capos lending their subtle magic. Sometimes the guitar is strummed in steady rhythm, other times delicately plucked, each note a shimmering thread. His voice—equally commanding in piano or forte—emerges as a powerful, controlled force. Resonant and penetrating, it flows effortlessly over deliciously meandering notes and chords, wrapping the listener in its vibrant embrace.
Back to normal tuning for Toledo, a little gem from The Blue Nile—a Scottish band cherished by 40 Watt Sun and recently name-checked by Taylor Swift. In doing so, Swift unveils Walker’s personal, private pleasure to the wider world. Yet, we wonder: when will Swift, in turn, name-check 40 Watt Sun? Surely, it’s only a matter of time. Walker follows this with Astoria—the first single from his new album—a composition that feels both self-contained and expansive. Its warmth, simplicity, and instinctive spontaneity are masterfully underpinned by raw vulnerability and a deep, authentic emotion.
Words hold a sacred weight tonight, each one crystal clear, deliberate, and infused with intention. Patrick Walker takes us on a surprising journey, singing Iron Maiden‘s ‘Wasted Years‘ with a poignant depth that transforms the metal anthem into something intimate and tender. Then, he offers a Christmas gift in the form of ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,’ delivered with flawless grace. There isn’t a trite or corny moment to be found – just heartfelt honesty, a true reflection of his self-assured talent and unshakable authenticity.
Marazion—a beautiful, remote village in Cornwall where some of his songs take root—becomes the final offering we hear before he assumes we’ve drifted away. In that fleeting moment of liberation from the clicking and scribbling, he shares a palpable sigh of relief with his loyal fans (including Bruce, mentioned earlier, whose smile we’ve been chasing in vain all evening, hopeful for a quote). 40 Watt Sun lets the—let’s face it—slightly acerbic commentary flow freely, right up until we gently remind him, “We’re still here,” steadfast at the very back, by the loos. It’s a compliment, you know—sometimes we’re gone by the first three…

The track features an impressive lineup, including vocalists Chip Z’nuff (Enuff Z’nuff) and Stephen Shareaux (Kik Tracee), along with Drew Fortier (The Lucid) on guitar and Paolo Caridi on drums.

Ellefson shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating:
“The skinny tie alternative rock movement of the early ’80s was such a fun and creative era for music. Ah! Leah! Was not only a massive FM radio hit; it’s a hauntingly beautiful song with an unforgettable melody and lyric. Alongside acts like Aldo Nova, The Greg Kihn Band, Joe Jackson and The Cars, this was a transformative time for rock music that shaped me as a young musician. This rendition brings together an amazingly talented group of friends and musicians to create a really cool version of this classic, setting a creative tone for the holiday season!”
Chip Z’Nuff adds, “Anytime I get the opportunity to work with heavyweights on a classic 1980s hit, I sonically attack with as much reflection and intent as possible. David Ellefson picked an incendiary track with Donnie Iris Ah! Leah!, which is the perfect combination of pop meets metal in 2025!”

The Philly Specials and Jon Bon Jovi – A Holiday Spectacular
The Philly Specials are back with one last surprise this holiday season, with the release of ‘Run Rudolph Run’, another massive and unexpected collaboration- this time with Jon Bon Jovi.
This comes on the heels of Operation Snowball, which saw Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson, and Jordan Mailata – surprising students at Ben Franklin High School, Eliza B. Kirkbride School, and Alliance Charter School as Operation Snowball arrived via motorcade which included The Philly Specials’ red Astrovan, a Philly Specials toy truck, police escorts, three Amazon delivery vans, and a firetruck amongst others to hand deliver presents and celebrate the end of 2024!
In addition to providing a gift for every student and teacher in the School District of Philadelphia (1.1 million gifted items) in a partnership with The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia, the players gave high fives, led sing-alongs, visited with classrooms, and hand-delivered gifts to students.
The students and teachers were delighted to share in the joy of the season and recognize the culmination of their hard work and dedication with some of the most recognizable NFL Eagles, all of the big four Philadelphia mascots (Swoop, The Phanatic, Gritty, Franklin), Paw Patrol’s Chase, Eagles security Big Dom, honorary Eagles fan, comedian Pete Davidson, Wallo & Gillie Da King and the Operation Snowball global partners. Joining The Philly Specials were Governor Josh Shapiro, PA Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton, The School District of Philadelphia’s Superintendent Tony B. Watlington Sr., Ed. D., President and CEO of The Fund For The School District of Philadelphia, Kathryn Epps, and representatives from the global retailers, toy companies and nonprofits who partnered with The Philly Specials to help bring Operation Snowball to life.
“When the guys said they wanted to give each student and teacher in the School District of Philadelphia a gift from the record this year, I knew it was ambitious, but I also knew if we could tap into that special spirit in Philadelphia, we could do it, ” says Vera Y Records’ executive producer, Connor Barwin. “And together, many people who care and love this city came together and willed Operation Snowball into existence. Visiting the schools with Kelce, Lane, Jordan, and our partners was incredibly rewarding and a day that none of us will forget. Seeing the joy and happiness throughout the schools on all of the students’ and teachers’ faces is what it’s all about and a perfect way to celebrate the success of what has been an incredible three years making a holiday trilogy with these guys!”
“These guys truly give their all in everything they do,” says producer and musical director Charlie Hall(The War On Drugs). “We set out to do something filled with joy and friendship and bringing all those feelings from the studio into our schools was an incredible way to spread the fun to the students and teachers. One thing that was clearly evident in our school visits is that regardless of one’s faith or how one celebrates the holidays, joy is universal. As the parent of children in the Philadelphia school district and spouse of an educator, I know that everyone involved will remember this day for years to come.”

The initial idea for Operation Snowball was sparked by Jason Kelce wanting to match the indomitable spirit of the City of Philadelphia by doing something BIG that would reach an unprecedented number of youth. When children’s entertainment company Spin Master generously donated close to $1 million worth of toys to get the initiative (and snowball) rolling, Operation Snowball was born. The first two singles from A Philly Special Christmas Party include the iTunes holiday chart topping Kelce and Stevie Nicksduet, “Maybe This Christmas,” and the charting Jason, Travis, and Boyz II Men collaboration, “It’s Christmas Time (In Cleveland Heights).” Music video for “Loud Little Town,” featuring Jason and Kylie Kelce, was released via YouTube the night before Thanksgiving.
A Philly Special Christmas Special raised over $3M and singles, “This Christmas,” “All I Want for Christmas is You,” “Fairytale of Philadelphia,” and “Pretty Paper” have garnered over 10M streams across platforms. “Fairytale of Philadelphia” reached #1 on iTunes, 50,000 copies have been sold on vinyl and the stop motion special created by unPOP Animation, A Philly Special Christmas Special, has been viewed over 700,000 times with 10,000 live viewers tuning in to its premiere on Thanksgiving night. Its predecessor in 2022, A Philly Special Christmas, immediately sold out its limited pressing. The record reached four top ten spots on various Billboard Music Charts including #1 on the Compilation Albums Chart. A Philly Special Christmas donated over $1M to local charities including Children’s Crisis Treatment Center and fulfilled the wish lists of Philadelphia School District teachers via Donors Choose.

The Twang have been celebrating the 15th anniversary of their fan favourite album ‘Jewellery Quarter’.

Unit:187 -Get On The Dancefloor
Unit:187 was founded in 1994 by the Vancouver, Canada-based duo John Morgan and Tod Law, issuing a debut album entitled ‘Stillborn’ in 1997.
‘Loaded’ followed a year later, featuring new band members Jed Simon (guitar) and Byron Stroud (bass) of Strapping Young Lad and produced by that band’s leader (and future prog icon) Devin Townsend.
The album yielded instant industrial classics that included the title track and a remix of the song ‘Stillborn’ by Rhys Fulber (a member of Front Line Assembly and the producer of Fear Factory at that time).
Their third album, ’Capital Punishment’ (2002), utilised the electronic programming and production skills of Chris Peterson (live member of Front Line Assembly) and mixer Anthony Valcic (producer for both Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly), the group’s trademark synth riffs, movie samples and driving guitars blazing full-tilt from the start right through to the conclusion of the album.
2010’s ‘Out For Blood’ saw adjustments to the group line-up, with Chris Peterson becoming a permanent member and guitarist Ross Redhead (Decree) also joining. Punching fist-first through what they perceived as ‘goth euro-cheese’, they came up trumps with a solid dose of old-school industrial that hadn’t been heard in years.
Unit:187 vocalist/co-founder Tod Law sadly passed away in 2015, but left a legacy of music that has inspired the band to finally move forward. Now fronted by former backing singer Kerry Vink-Peterson, their brand new ‘KillCure’ album continues to pack attitude and punch, albeit with a dancefloor friendly edge.
