Infamous rock duo The Soapgirls head to the US for a run of dates off the back of the success of the single āBreatheā rising in the US Spotify charts.Ā
The Soapgirls are one of the most hard-working and nicest bands in the world. Their style of music is grunge and rock, drawing influences from Alice in Chains, Lamb of God and Nirvana, through to Fleetwood Mac, Blondie and classic rock and pop.
The music is gritty and rocky, yet melodic and catchy, with vocals that range from sweet harmonies to raw growls.
The band tours for 6-8 months each year, playing across the UK, Europe, Japan and USA, steadily building a growing fanbase and carving their own unique niche. Between shows, the band live streams on YouTube and Instagram up to three times a week to its dedicated community of fans, called āSoapsudsā.
The Soapgirls – sisters Camille (Mille) on bass/vocals and NoĆ©mie (Mie) Debray on guitar/vocals – are originally from France and moved to Cape Town as children. They have always been socially conscious and acutely aware, largely because of their own challenges, of the need to care for people who are less fortunate. They became an international attraction as street performers singing and selling homemade soaps to tourists in order to donate the proceeds to hospitals ā which earned them the name āThe SoapGirlsā.Ā
As teenagers, they appeared on the TV show South African Idols (equivalent to American Idols and the X Factor), and then stormed to #1 on the album charts in South Africa with a dance-pop debut album and record deal with Universal. They quickly realized the price of this success and fought for years to free themselves from the trappings of a major label. Since then, the band has taken a completely DIY approach to their music, delivering the rock and grunge style of music they love, with a steadfast determination to do things on their own terms.Ā
They take an uncompromising and sometimes unapologetic approach to their live shows, advocating freedom of expression and encouraging the audience to be just as comfortable, as their song title suggests, āIn My Skinā as the girls are when they perform.
The SoapGirls remind us that music can still be straight to the point, honest and exciting.
