FLETCHER
Cari Elise Fletcher was born on March 19, 1994. She grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey. She began taking vocal lessons at the age of five.
In 2012 she graduated from Wall High School in Wall Township, New Jersey, where she played women’s volleyball and participated in the school’s theatre program. She spends her time between Los Angeles, New York City, and her home in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
Her first big break in the music industry came in 2011, when she competed on the premiere season of the American version of The X Factor. In the boot camp round, Paula Abdul paired Fletcher with Hayley Orrantia, Paige Elizabeth Ogle, and Dani Knights to form the group Lakoda Rayne. They were eliminated in the fifth week of the competition.
Upon graduation from Wall High School, Fletcher attended the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University. She took a year-long leave of absence and moved to Nashville, Tennessee to collaborate with producer Jamie Kenney, during which the single “War Paint” was released. In September 2016, she released her debut EP Finding Fletcher.
In 2010, at the age of 16, Fletcher landed her debut film role in the short film How Katie Howard Found Herself. The film portrays Fletcher as Katie, an unconfident teenage high school girl who feels disliked by her peers, until a group of popular girls approach her and offer her a transformation before taking her to the weekend’s biggest party. She later revealed in an interview with iHeartRadio that ‘How Katie Howard Found Herself’ was a school project.
On August 9, she announced on Instagram that she had signed with Capitol Records, which is based in Los Angeles. She now shares the label with artists such as Paul McCartney, Halsey, Katy Perry, Mary J. Blige and Sam Smith.
In January 2019, Fletcher released the single “Undrunk”. On March 19, she made her television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In April 2019, she released “If You’re Gonna Lie”, marketed as a prequel to “Undrunk”. Subsequently, on May 24, 2019, she released “About You”, another single about an ex. On August 2, 2019, Fletcher announced that her second EP, You Ruined New York City for Me (stylized in all lowercase), would be released on August 16. On October 30, Fletcher was announced as an opening act for Niall Horan’s Nice to Meet Ya Tour, set to begin in 2020.
Fletcher and “Wasted Youth” music video costar Shannon Beveridge have been dating since the end of 2016.
She has expressed that she identifies as part of the LGBT community, although she has not publicly stated her sexual identity. She actively chooses not to label her sexuality. She encourages other young people not to label themselves if they don’t want to.
She wants to use her public platform to advocate for queer and transgender communities.
