We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John Sinclair, the revolutionary poet, activist, and cultural icon, who peacefully departed on Tuesday (2nd April) at the age of 82.
His death signifies the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of fearless advocacy, radical poetry, and an unwavering commitment to social justice.
Born on October 2, 1941, Sinclair was a prominent figure in the countercultural movement of the 1960s and 1970s. His poetry, infused with passion and political fervor, captured the spirit of rebellion and resistance that defined the era. As a co-founder of the White Panther Party, Sinclair fought tirelessly against racism, oppression, and the injustices of the Vietnam War.
Sinclair’s influence extended far beyond his poetry. He played a pivotal role in shaping the music scene of Detroit and beyond, championing avant-garde rock music and promoting artists who shared his radical vision. His collaboration with the pioneering rock band MC5 helped ignite a musical revolution and inspire generations of musicians.
During his lifetime, Sinclair faced persecution and imprisonment for his beliefs. His arrest and subsequent incarceration became a rallying cry for the anti-war movement, sparking widespread outrage and galvanizing support for his cause. Despite the hardships he endured, Sinclair remained resolute in his commitment to social change and continued to advocate for justice.
We had the great pleasure of meeting John through the years, listening to his poetry, and photographing him between plumes of ‘smoke’. To us, he was a legend, and his presence was a gift. Everyone who had the privilege of meeting John was touched by his warmth, wit, and unwavering spirit. His poetry readings were electrifying events, filled with passion, insight, and a fierce determination to challenge the status quo. His presence left an indelible mark on all who had the honour of listening to his words.
As a testament to his enduring legacy, Sinclair’s work will continue to inspire future generations of poets, activists, and artists. His unwavering dedication to freedom, justice, and the pursuit of truth will forever serve as a beacon of hope in a world all too often plagued by darkness.
Like so many others, he may no longer walk among us, but his spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of all those who continue to fight for a better world.
Rest in power, John Sinclair.
