NYC-based electronic punk band Lip Critic announce their signing to Partisan Records, and share new track “It’s The Magic”.
The new single is a mission statement with its dislocating collision of raw-nerved punk and drum and bass tempos that warrants not one, but two drummers, to execute. The accompanying video, directed in a collaboration between the band and Aaron Fenichell, is a visual translation of Lip Critic‘s warped interior world.
The band have already been turning heads all over NYC, where they’ve found themselves on hip-hop, punk and dance bills – simultaneously out of place and right at home on all of them. Frontman Bret Kaser, who carries the energy of Fred Schneider of the B-52’s if he fronted a hardcore band, delivers lyrics about the absurdity of everyday life with hypnotic charisma.
Defined by their frenetic live performances, Lip Critic doesn’t fit neatly into any scene. Their shows are known for their freewheeling experimentation, anchored by the caustic chemistry of drummers Ilan Natterand Danny Eberle, who play facing one another with Bret Kaser and Connor Kleitz on samplers in the middle. The environment is something like a f**ked-up rave that a bunch of hardcore kids and punks showed up to. Lip Critic borrows from so many different places that they cease to resemble any of them at all. As So Young Magazine recently stated of their latest single: “Forming some sort of alloy of hardcore, hip-hop, and dance, it’s a metallic mutation born from the absurdity of everyday life.”“
Lip Critic will be heading to the UK for a run of headline shows this November. Full routing below, and stay tuned for more.
