Ron Pope – An American Journey
Nashville-based platinum recording artistĀ Ron PopeĀ has announcedĀ his forthcoming LP,Ā American Man, American Music, with the release of a new single, ‘Mama Drove A Mustang’.
American Man, American MusicĀ is set for release on February 14, 2025 via Brooklyn Basement Records.Ā
āThe title of the album is a nod to Ron’s hardscrabble upbringing,āĀ saysĀ HollerĀ in their announcement and track premiere.Ā āBorn to struggling teenage parents, Ron was often left in the care of relatives and regularly dealt with food insecurity. He never felt at home anywhere – until he discovered the road and the concept of āAmericaā became a frequent character in his personal story, as he formed the idea of what āhomeā isā¦Pope gives a clear-eyed examination of that story in his new albumĀ American Man, American Music,āĀ HollerĀ continues, adding,Ā āitās an ambitious project that uses the touchstones of his sometimes-wayward journey to ask big questions.ā
HollerĀ calls new single ‘Mama Drove A Mustang’ aĀ ālife affirming, steering wheel slapping heartland rock anthem.āĀ āEvoking a very particular American landscape, the driving guitars count down the white lines of the highway as Pope reflects on the distance between adolescent dreams and adult realities,āĀ they continue.Ā āEarnest without slipping over into sentimentality and authentic without ever sounding contrived, ‘Mama Drove a Mustang’ feels like a raucous descendent of the kind of punk spirited alt-country of The Replacements orĀ Copperhead RoadĀ era Steve Earle.ā
In ‘Mama Drove A Mustang’, Pope recalls hisĀ mother,Ā “a newly minted divorcee at 25,”Ā buying the one car she could imagine herself driving – a Ford Mustang. However, she had two small children, and a tiny sports car was wildly impractical.Ā “That car was something of a metaphor for my upbringing; there was lots of shit we probably shouldnāt have done, but my parents were kids too, figuring it all out as they careened through their 20s occasionally bumping into the proverbial guardrails, so we often just went ahead and made the mistake, took our lumps, and kept on rolling,”Ā Pope says.Ā
“I carried that ‘fuck it, let it ride’ attitude with me as I went out to seek fortune and fame in the bright lights. I ran long and hard with very little to show for it except an endless hangover and then, when my dreams inexplicably started coming true, I was gut-punched with the reality that none of it changed the way I felt about myself. Figuring out how to put down my bullshit and become a grown-up for my own family has been a big part of my trip as a human being. The journey from scared little kid, flying down the highway in a white blur with a sometimes dangerous (if well-meaning) lunatic behind the wheel to a fairly stable grownup/father/husband/song-and-dance-man has been jarring, to say the very least,”Ā he adds.Ā “I love my mom, and she loved that ill-advised quarter-life crisis car. Sheās a chill grandma now and thank God she finally quit driving like sheās trying to qualify for Daytona.”
‘Mama Drove A Mustang’ follows album tracksĀ ‘I Pray Iāll Be Seeing You Soon’, the playful ‘Nobodyās Gonna Make It Out Alive’, ‘I Gotta Change (Or Iām Gonna Die)’, a gut-punching commentary on the opioid epidemic, and ‘Iām Not The Devil (ft. Taylor Bickett).’Ā
For a long time, living on the road felt tailor-made for someone like Pope.Ā āAnd then I found love, grew up and developed a sense of home centered around that love. But America is a character in my personal story in a way that it might not be for other people,āĀ he says. Itās a long road to that state of contentment, though.Ā American Man, American MusicĀ reaches back to a time of humiliating gigs in Georgia bars and long stretches making trouble with friends before the complexities of adult life started to kick in. Then Pope falls in love, gets dealt some crushing losses, and starts to take a closer look at the struggles of his community, like swaths of blue-collar areas decimated by opioid addictions.Ā
Through it all, Popeās empathy comes through in the albumās open-hearted messages: we all deserve to have a place to call home, we all deserve to have a shot at building a life, and we all have a family, whether blood or chosen.Ā āThis is an ode to the life I’m living now,āĀ Pope says,Ā āthe journey it took me to get here and all the people I’ve known and loved along the way.āĀ
American Man, American MusicĀ can be pre-savedĀ HERE. In November, Pope will embark on a co-headlining tour with singer-songwriter Joshua Radin across the Western US. He also recently announced theĀ āNeon and Glass World Tour,ā 28 dates slated for 2025 spanning the UK, EU, and the US, with Emily Scott Robinson, Andrea von Kampen, Thunderstorm Artis, and Denitia opening. MAGNUS BERG – An Inquisitive Nature
Norwegian guitarist, songwriter and vocalistĀ MAGNUS BERGĀ began his musical journey at the age of ten.
Initially influenced by his grandfather and uncle, both musicians, he was introduced to a diverse range of genres, including blues legends, rock ‘n’ roll icons, plus virtuosos such as Django Reinhardt and Robert Normann (his compatriot and a jazz guitar pioneer). From the very beginning, Berg decided to immerse himself in the world of guitars.
After several years of dedicated practice and learning the art of songwriting, Berg dropped out of high school and moved from the small town of Skiptvet in north-west Norway to Oslo in the south, where he began performing live. Still in his mid-teens, he met drummer Ola Ćverby at a youth programme for talented musicians and their friendship evolved into sporadic recording projects, including the award-winning 2014 album āCut Me Looseā, recorded when Berg was just 17.

Sharing a passion for ācoolā music of the ’60s and ’70s, the duo discovered a lot of common ground in their preferences and their collaboration deepened over time. Fuelled by a shared vision and inquisitive nature, they began delving deeper into music, asking each other questions: How should a beat be played? What should ‘fuzz’ sound like? Which microphones offer the best sound? Ultimately, they landed at a bigger question: What sort of musicians do we want to become together?
The answer can be found in āElectric Sugarā, their just completed debut album as MAGNUS BERG (note the deliberate use of caps). Recorded at Studio Paradiso in Oslo with the input of producer Christian Engfelt, who predominantly records live to analog tape, this breakout release is packed with inventive psychedelic sounds over a blues rock foundation. Berg himself pays homage to his roots – including his grandfather – throughout, with the song āLove Smileā reviving a 1920s melody by Pietro Frosini that was famously adapted for a Tarantino movie soundtrack.
![](https://usercontent.one/wp/www.1st3-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-3.png)
Following an extensive period of recording experiences, global touring and some contemplation, Berg emerges triumphant here. Born out of resilience against bad deals and external pressures, āElectric Sugarā marks his return with a collection of compelling songs, licks and riffs. The album will be released in early 2025, but the song āSave Them Kidsā will be issued as its first single on 18th October 2024 to coincide with a short UK tour supporting soulful blues rock musician Gary Clark Jr..

Join us at Brompton Cemetery Chapel for an intimate candlelit concert with Thomas Truax, the music-maker, daydreamer, and inventor of self-made instruments.
In the shadowy realms where imagination dances with the peculiar, Thomas Truax emerges as a maestro of the strange and wonderful.
Like a mad inventor in a gothic fable, he conjures haunting melodies with his bizarre homemade instruments, weaving together surreal tales that linger in the depths of your mind. His creations, both mechanical and musical, are imbued with an eerie charm, beckoning the curious and brave to step into his worldāwhere every note feels like a forgotten whisper from the dark corners of the universe. Beware, dear listener, for once you enter, there’s no turning back…

Rioghan comments Edge -single:
” āEdgeā sets the directions to the new albumās scenery, describing the harsh duality of deeply cut adoration and sickening disappointment, through the eyes of a wounded muse seeking for her revenge. Instrumentally the song is a quite unexpected take. We really pondered if it should be the first single at all, but after thorough thought we understood no other song would fit better for the first taste. This is our āshovel to the faceā -opening act!”

Rioghan is a fresh breeze to progressive metal scene from Finland. The band consists of singer Rioghan Darcy, multi-instrumentalistĀ Teemu Liekkala, guitarist Tero Luukkonen, bassistĀ Antti VarjanneĀ and drummerĀ Valtteri Revonkorpi.
Their debut album āDifferent Kinds Of Lossesā was made in collaboration withĀ Jonas RenkseĀ (Katatonia),Ā Einar SolbergĀ (Leprous) andĀ Teemu KoskelaĀ (ex-Celesty), and it was rolled out during 2022 sparking interest widely. The singles got airtime in Finland and also internationally, and after the album release in December, Rioghanās monthly listeners on Spotify peaked at 40 000. The songs also got into multiple Spotify editorial playlists.
Live line-up was put into action in 2023, and this autumn Rioghan will return to stages supporting Wheel on their Charismatic Leaders -tour, bringing their stellar show to Tampere, Kuopio, Helsinki, JyvƤskylƤ, Lahti, and Oulu.
With new full-length album well on the way, the first single āEdgeā opens up a completely new portal to Rioghanās mindset with more straight forward and even aggressive approach. Astonishing range of Rioghan Darcyās vocals, rowdy djenty guitars and guest performerĀ Vikram Shankarās flowing keyboards will keep you on the edge of your seat for the whole song.
Rioghan started out as a solo project by singer and poetess Rioghan Darcy, based in Lapua, Finland. After years of writing poetry and lyrics, Rioghan was founded in 2019 with an intention to fleshen up some of her words with music. After a while, it grew into a trio with Teemu Liekkala (guitars, bass, keys, production) and Valtteri Revonkorpi (drums) added as permanent stars for the band, and in 2024 guitarist Tero Luukkonen and bassist Antti Varjanne also officially joined the band from live line-up. Rooted deeply in both gothic and progressive metal scenes, they sure should bring something interesting on the table.

Hello Mary (Live Review) – Something To Say
The beautiful Camden Town evening light cast a warm embrace around the wide-eyed crowd assembled outside The Roundhouse, who appeared as though they hadnāt seen the light of day for quite some time.
Perhaps marathon forays into Dungeons and Dragons or Elden Ring have dimmed their eyes, leaving them all blinky out in the real world.
From whatever realm they sprung forth, they are polite and determined, fervent in their passion for the particular brand of emotional nostalgia this evening offersāa blend of past and present teenage melancholyāand they look visibly more relaxed once inside the safe womb of the venue where it is equally as warm but not at all bright; in fact, the lights seem particularly subdued this evening.

1st 3 Magazine first became aware of Hello Mary when we had the immense pleasure of hanging out with NYC singer/songwriter Emily Duff back in July this year. Emily spoke warmly and generously of the girlsā talent in response to our question about which music she was currently excited about.
The music meanders from atonal and uncomfortable to reassuring resolution and back again"

Lighting the fuse for American Soccer, it felt like a significant step to walk onto the vastness of The Roundhouse stage. Guitarist/vocalist Helena Straight, drummer/vocalist Stella Wave, and bassist Mikaela Oppenheimer fearlessly launched into their evocative, intense set with sustained, buzzy bass notes, which developed into their first song, ‘Float.’ They evoked an angel cake: their delicate, slender beauty and feminine attire contrasted excitingly with the grungy, buzzy sound they produced. The impossibly light, ethereal vocalsāunsettlingly, unusually, and edgily harmonized in intervals of 4thsāsoared gloriously over the top, leaving the audience hungry for more.
There are sections of meandering tonality before we are brutally dragged back into a wall of noise'
There are mid-section shifts, and pace and time signature changes which combine with distorted guitar effects to create a blurry, atonal sound that merges perfectly with a heavy, insistent beat. This song segues seamlessly into the experimental-sounding Hiyeahi ā pounding drums threaten to fibrillate those atria while the electro noises and apocalyptic lyrics over repeatedly and oppressively strummed guitars are an insight into something uniquely personal about this band. Thereās a sense of discomfort here- anger, yes, but also a sadness and bluntness that is a direct and thrilling juxtaposition to what we are seeing. A jarring synth sound and unexpected crackles transport us to the world of Three, a song awkwardly uneven and blurry yet brought to satisfying aural cohesion by clever, sharp and intricate drumming. This music is hugely atmospheric; dreamlike and cinematic we almost expect a psychedelic film to start or an edgy, bleak Channel 4 documentaryā¦
There are sections of meandering tonality before we are brutally dragged back into a wall of noise- stitched together by more pretty riffs that make sense of each song. The audience are mesmerized by this shoegazy, heavenly chaos and we kept hoping for eye contact, for some kind of connection- for them to realise that we were here, loving it, loving them- but we were left wanting.
The interplay between songs is continuous; sounds no-one expects appear flow and ebb in an esoteric, mesmeric dream sequence.'
![](https://usercontent.one/wp/www.1st3-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/AT3A9867-Enhanced-NR-1024x683.png)
The unsettling contrasts between roars of rage and frustration and heavenly harmonies built a titillating intensity- and eventually, Helena says hello and thanks us for being here. A rare smile form Stella illuminates the stage as she acknowledges the crowdās response, before the powerful soundscape that is Heavy Sleeper continues the set.
These musicians have something to say, something to share and something to convey."
Each intro takes us by surprise; we think itās going one way and thereās an abrupt pause before the track changes tack and goes in the opposite direction. The interplay between songs is continuous; sounds no-one expects appear flow and ebb in an esoteric, mesmeric dream sequence. The music meanders from atonal and uncomfortable to reassuring resolution and back again in an aesthetic overlapping that leaves us in awe of Hello Maryās particular and original kind of music-making. These musicians have something to say, something to share and something to convey.

Speaking to Stella briefly as they are packing up, we ask her who the bandās influences are. After a short discussion around the obvious (Radiohead, Nirvana, PJ Harveyā¦) she tells us, āSo many- whatever youāre thinking, youāre probably right.ā

Surrender The Ghost – Let Out The Energy
With a focus on good hangs and brotherhood, creating music has simply become a by product of everything Columbus, Ohio-based bandĀ Surrender The GhostĀ has built through friendship and love.
Fresh off a stint supportingĀ SaosinĀ last week (and an upcomingĀ November show withĀ MAE), the band has just announced their signing to fast rising indie labelĀ PNWK Records, with plans to release new music in early 2025.
In the meantime, check out the new live video of theirĀ recent singleĀ “We Don’t Do Pity”.
Video filmed by Alex Scalzo and edited by Robert Bowling.
Matthew Ellis- Guitar
Brandon Eldridge- Bass
Mark Johnston- Drums
Tony Chaffin- Guitar
Ricky Gonzales- Vocals
After walking away from music in 2017, Matthew Ellis had the fire reignited during the fall of 2020 after a few too many drinks and spinning some of his favorite records. The simple idea of writing an EP with old friends quickly grew into a project that he promised his wife it wouldnāt, A REAL BAND (insert Blues Brothers quote). From there the choice was simple, longtime friend and guitarist Tony Chaffin whoās really only good at two things: 1) Delivering a timely joke and 2) Shredding guitars. Armed with two guitars and a handful of demos it was now time to find a drummer. Who better to sit behind the kit than Mark Johnston?Ā
![](https://usercontent.one/wp/www.1st3-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/2S2znNoAlk5fTcVfWwIGoPrkhY1eMxpRjJjuQOcT-1024x574.webp)
Besides the facts that he hadnāt played drums in 20 years, lived an hour and a half away and is a stay at home dad with āmore asses in the house than seats to sit onā(his words), what could stop this trio now? Well, not having a bass player or singerā¦but those are easy fixes, right? After working together for years and many heated discussions about the greatness of John Stocktonās NBA career, Ellis and Brandon Eldridge (Bass) reached an agreement: NO NBA talk, and letās take Surrender The Ghost as far as possible. Now was time to find a singer. Enter Ricky Gonzalez. Thanks to a chance encounter at a bar due to all of Ellisās extrovert energy, some alcohol and a little convincing from Rickyās girlfriend (they are forever indebted to you, Megan), Ricky made the decision to bring his incredible voice and lyrics to Surrender the Ghost, and has completed the vision Matthew and Tony had at the start. With a newly finished EP, Donāt Mind Me (recorded at Reel Love recording in Dayton, Ohio) the crew is ready to step on stage and let out the energy that has been building for four years.

Doctor Black – There’s A Fungus Among Us
Alternative metal band Doctor Black, led by seasoned UK multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Rob Rees, is set to release their hard-hitting new single, āFungusā.
Known for their fusion of metal, punk, and post-hardcore, Doctor Blackās distinctive sound is aggressively heavy yet undeniably melodic.
āFungusā continues this trend, offering a cathartic exploration of hypochondria, anxiety, and post-pandemic paranoia, exaggerated through the lens of Robās unique worldview.
Drawing inspiration from iconic acts such as Slipknot, Parkway Drive, and A Day To Remember, āFungusā is a powerful reflection on the emotional turmoil many experienced during the COVID era. The track channels these dark themes into an accessible, high-energy anthem built on crushing riffs and catchy hooks. āThe song is about suffering from crippling levels of hypochondria,ā says Rob Rees, ābut it also portrays a heightened version of the collective fear we all went through during the pandemic.ā
Rob Rees, a veteran of the UK music scene since 2007, brings his extensive experience to Doctor Black, pushing the boundaries of the alternative music landscape. The bandās debut single āQueen of Summertimeā, released earlier this year, received worldwide airplay and praise for its bold mix of intensity and accessibility. With āFungusā, Doctor Black continues to carve out a unique sonic space, blending aggression with melodic sensibility in a way that resonates with both metalheads and broader alternative audiences.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
Both āQueen of Summertimeā and āFungusā are taken from the bandās upcoming debut album, which promises to solidify Doctor Blackās place in the alternative music scene.

zzzahara – It’ll Be Ok
Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter zzzahara announces their new album, Spiral Your Way Out, out 10th JanuaryĀ 2025, on Lex Records, and shares its lead single/video, āGhosts.ā
The follow up to their 2023 album, Tender, Spiral Your Way Out sees zzzahara continue to evolve. Emotionally, its foundations are built on scorched earth. The album finds zzzahara in the aftermath of a relationship spent trying to fit someone elseās mould, being jerked around by indecision, and then hitting āemotional rock bottom.ā
Made in a three-month burst that let all their pent-up frustrations loose, Spiral Your Way Out is in part a work of self-reclamation, swapping Tenderās meditative state for something fiery and more assertive. āI was going through such a tough time, but I felt like I didn’t have anyone to reach out to,ā zzzahara says of the period leading up to the album, which was a chaotic blur spent mostly on tour or in isolation. āWhen I finally sat down in the studio, I just had all this fucking anger ā towards that person for treating me badly, but mostly towards myself for not walking away. I think in that situation I just kind of let things be, and I was mad at myself for letting myself isolate for so long and never putting my foot down. In the end, I just took it all out on the record.ā
Lead single āGhostsā is a highly relatable, stripped-back track about hating and loving the feeling of staying in a toxic relationship, taking a page out of the Scene Aesthetic and Dashboard Confessional playbooks. The vocals take the lead, allowing the most painful emotions to stick out like exposed nails. The 3D-animated video for the track is directed by Hannah Bon and features a 3D-rendered zzzahara trapped in a dream, as things start to get weirder and weirder, with cats singing the song back to them and ghosts appearing out of lava lamps.
Speaking on the video, Bon said “I was instantly moved by ‘Ghosts’ and how quickly and visually the idea started taking shape just through listening to zzzaharaās personal lyrics. Taking literal inspiration from the title Ghosts, the music video follows Zahara being haunted by an ex lover in their bedroom – all in a 2000 video game aesthetic. Working with 3D animator Hilmy Hendrakusuma we built a claustrophobic stage for a 3D Zahara to inhabit. The look was inspired by Japanese horror video games I grew up with such as Fatal Frame, Clocktower 3 and Alisa. It was such a great experience to create with Z and their team where they allowed for such a wonderfully collaborative environment. Directing this was so special and such a blast.”
zzzaharaās music wades into the deep waters of love, lust, and self-discovery in a part of the world where artifice and authenticity co-exist. Emerging from the heart of LAās alternative music scene, their sound is raw in feeling and rebellious by nature. Their 2022 debut album, Liminal Spaces, chronicles a coming-of-age in Highland Park, following painful childhood memories through late-night, live-fast coping mechanisms, and the changes the neighborhood has endured over the same period of time. Their 2023 follow-up, Tender, marked a period of slowing down, looking inward, and embracing a softer side of being.
Ā
Spiral Your Way Out marks another sonic evolution as much as an emotional one. zzzaharaās songs have always come wrapped in a warm glow that reflects how they were written ā namely at home in their bedroom. That glow remains on Spiral Your Way Out, but it also packs an ambitious streak and a gutsy punch. Taking a more collaborative approach than usual, zzzahara worked with a range of producers including Jorge Elbrecht (Japanese Breakfast, No Joy, Sky Ferreira), Sarah Tudzin (boygenius, Cloud Nothings, The Armed), former Ducktails guitarist Alex Craig (Jelani Aryeh / re6ce) and Halsey tour drummer Franco Reid, who helped harness their intimate style of writing and blow it up into something more panoptic. āA lot of the instrumentation is either a group effort or just two of us in the room, so it felt nice to have that weight off my shoulders,ā they explain. āIt felt comfortable to have them lead or translate what Iād written and make it better.ā
Ā
There is a certain ease to zzzaharaās music that’s rooted in the ebb and flow of their life. They pick up the guitar and write every day, clinging to the most memorable riffs and melodies like lights in the dark. āMusic for me is therapeutic,ā says zzzahara. After a year of upheaval, zzzahara finally feels ācalm.ā The musical equivalent to going several rounds on a punching bag, Spiral Your Way Out finds solace between extremes. It licks its wounds in a place where pain and love, healing and abandon, sit side-by-side. If it has a message, it’s one of standing tall in your own shoes ā scuffs and all. āThat’s what I figured out at the end of this journey: I donāt need all this therapy. I can just be, and it’ll be okay.ā

LOVE GHOST x SKOLD – Fire With Brimstone
US indie/alt-rock maverickĀ Love GhostĀ (Finnegan Bell) and Swedish industrial music legendĀ Tim SkoldĀ (SKOLD, Shotgun Messiah, KMFDM, Marilyn Manson, Motionless in White) have issued their third collaborative single, āSki Maskā.
The song is included on their eponymous debut album, which is set for release on 22nd November via Metropolis Records.
Mixing fire with brimstone, these two innovative artists have joined forces to forge the raw energy of grunge with the driving rhythms of industrial rock,Ā embellished with gothic hues. However, despite the pop sensibility of āSki Maskā, there is a darker background to the song.Ā āIt takes the listener on an emotional journey and has a crestfallen vibe akin to what a broken society feels like,āĀ explains Bell.Ā “Influenced by how an over-medicated youth can find it hard to manage the ups and downs of life as an adult, the lyrics deal with my personal relationship with pharmaceuticals, altered brain chemistry and how it leads you to some very dark places. It is told through the perspective of a heist, hence the title ‘Ski Maskā.ā
“This song definitely explores a darker side of our creativity, touching on ups and downs not usually explored in such a catchy almost pop format,”Ā adds Skold.
![](https://usercontent.one/wp/www.1st3-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-7-1024x684.jpeg)
Aside from releasing music as SKOLD, Tim Skold is known for his work as half of the duo Not My God (with Nero Bellum), KMFDM, Shotgun Messiah, Motionless in White and – especially – Marilyn Manson. In addition to being a full-fledged member of the latter, he also produced their no. 1 US album ‘The Golden Age of Grotesque’, celebrated hit single cover versions of ‘Tainted Love’ and ‘Personal Jesusā, plus the controversial ‘Eat Me, Drink Me’ album.

Founded by vocalist/guitarist Finnegan Bell, Love Ghost is an enigmatic LA-based band known for its distinctive blend of grunge, indie/alt- rock and post-punk. Informed by the Seattle tradition as much as a Soundcloud-era fearlessness, the combination of a raw, energetic sound with mature lyrics – not to mention several other recent collaborations – have earned them plaudits from US outlets such as Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, American Songwriter and New Noise.
