SINE – A Female Fronted Experience
SINE is the brainchild of US drummer/multi-instrumentalist Rona Rougeheart.
Her musical style is best described as ‘electronic boom’, weaving beats with industrial noise, Sub-bass and synthesisers to form a blend of dark yet lush sounds.
For live shows, she combines synths, drums and vocals for a strong, female-fronted experience that both entertains and encourages empowerment.
![](https://usercontent.one/wp/www.1st3-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/hg.png)
Born in New York, Rougeheart is the youngest daughter of a Taiwanese mother and Irish father. She grew up as a military child, living all over the US and in Japan, but is now based in Austin, Texas. Her musician father taught her how to play keyboards and guitar, before she later decided to take up drums. Playing in multiple Austin-based bands early in her career, she earned an endorsement from Gretsch Drums, with Gibraltar hardware and Roland then adding her to their respective rosters.
2019 saw Rougeheart open for goth legends Bauhaus in Orlando, Florida, which led to the ongoing band project Shiva Saves SITE formed by their bassist David J that also features industrial darkwave artist Curse Mackey, plus a revolving cast that includes Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner. Examples of other artists she has collaborated with are Adrian Sherwood, Meat Beat Manifesto, Clan of Xymox, Chris Connelly, (Pigface, Revolting Cocks), Mark Pistel (Consolidated), Andee Blacksugar (KMFDM, Blondie), Xiu Xiu and the late Mark Stewart (The Pop Group)
As SINE, Rougeheart recently opened for Nitzer Ebb and Clan Of Xymox and will support the latter on an American tour right after her debut appearance at the 2024 edition of the Cold Waves festival in Chicago on 29th September.

Having issued records via the Austin indie media company eMERGENCY heARTS, Rougeheart recently signed to US powerhouse label Metropolis Records and has released a brand new single entitled ‘Trauma Bondage’ today (27th September). Taken from an album to be issued in early 2025, the self-written song was co-produced with US hip-hop producer AwareNess with musical contributions from Curse Mackey and mastering by Jürgen Engler of Die Krupps.

Jane Doe – Carrying The Torch Of Rock And Roll
Jane Doe is not your average band – not by a long shot.
With an authentic sound woven from the milieu of rock and roll, the West Coast based Jane Doe is fronted by a defiant, opinionated but incredibly smart and compassionate woman, singing, screaming and messaging an entire generation of whom she’s connected to.
Jane Doe’s National (US/CDN) campaign launched along with their debut album “Identified”, January 2019 and was mastered by none other than the legendary Howie Weinberg. With tunes like the brutally honest ‘Final Line’, epic throwbacks and homage tracks like ‘This is a Rock Song’, as well as the empowering ‘Scab’ and haunting ‘Scar Territory’, Jane Doe’s music has become part of a new multi-generational soundtrack.
Their sophomore album Found marks a new musical chapter for the band. Single “Dig a Grave” is a face-melting grunge rock anthem celebrating the dirty moodiness of the era. The song is shared alongside a cinematic music video. Helmed by an experience-meets-innovation father-daughter duo, the visual is heavily inspired by Stanley Kubrick with its vibrant visuals, dark thematic undertones and sardonic bite.
Then there is “Atlas”, which features rolling drums, dynamic power chords, and deeply intense evocative vocals that fuse together for a vortex of magnetic ferocity. Frontwoman Izzy Kay adds, the song is “inspired by the music that came before us, laced with sarcastic lyrics, and ever-dedicated to carry the torch of rock n’ roll.”
![](https://usercontent.one/wp/www.1st3-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/3-1.png)
Tour Dates:
September 27 – Hawthorne Hideaway, Portland Oregon
October 24 – The Virgil, Los Angeles
Above all else, Jane Doe is the generation that doesn’t fit a specific mould. Jane Doe is a square peg in a round hole. Jane Doe is the wave of people who identify with the past but shape the future.

JSqrd & the Mixed-Up Zombies – Shocking And Terrifying
Inspired by an iconic sound that has echoed through theaters for generations, San Francisco collective JSqrd & the Mixed-Up Zombies presents their debut single ‘Do The Wilhelm Scream’.
Taking inspiration from a Hollywood tradition dating back to 1951, JJ (JSqrd) Holoubek brings this effect from the silver screen to the music scene in a fun and upbeat country-rock song that will have you tapping your feet to sounds once synonymous with thrill and suspense.
Based in San Francisco, JJ Holoubek has spent decades playing guitar and bass in bands – both original and cover bands – spanning California’s central coast and the SF Bay Area. However, he is best known as a founding member of the Trees of Mystery, a much-beloved band of semi-alcoholic musical misfits and troublemakers from San Luis Obispo, CA, who grabbed for the brass ring only to come up empty-handed.
“I wanted to keep the “original” version of this song simple, fun and easily recognizable, while offering a similarly goofy hip-hop(ish) version. The kernel for the tunes was planted long ago upon learning the history of “The Wilhelm Scream”, an often-used sound effect used in many Hollywood films, and popularized by directors George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. It was my intention to sprinkle the tunes with everyday people’s interpretations of the iconic shreik to induce nothing more or less than than a goofy chuckle, the ultimate purpose of the novelty song,” says JJ Holoubek (JSqrd).
“In an effort to join the pantheon of humorous American novelty songs, and a purely Halloween-related one at that, I recruited/strong-armed my family and friends to give me their best versions of the iconic movie sound effect, the Wilhelm scream, with the fervent hope of providing a dose of much needed silliness for all to enjoy.”
Guitars, guitarists, and their bands have been of a lifelong interest to JSqrd. From the likes of Duane Allman, the Steve’s of Howe & Hackett and Tom Verlaine, he’s taken chunks and/or tidbits from them all, added a dash of Capt. Beefheart and punk what-have-you to form, however misshapen, an approach and tone uniquely his own. Serving up a novelty song seemed like the only right and proper thing to do; a quite natural outcome when mixing blues, prog, new wave and noise.
An avid Burning Man attendee, JSqrd has been bringing half- and nearly full-assed art to the event for better than a quarter century. His “art” has lived, crashed, burned and risen by the event’s unofficial moto: One thousand great ideas, poorly executed. Also a seasoned voice-over artist and actor, JJ Holoubek has never been shy to put a smile on an horribly written infomercial or butcher any accent from any continent.

Kid Congo And The Pink Monkey Birds (Live Review) – Pushing It To The Next Dimension
In a mind bending, blistering support slot for Kid Congo, Martin Savage and the Jiggerz raced through no less than 14 songs, pulling off a feat of which The Ramones would have been proud.
This rapid-fire delivery wasn’t the only similarity. Lead singer, Martin sported a Ramones-style long bowl cut, albeit with a slightly grown-out fringe.
With his cartoon character t-shirt, leopard print strap and red guitar, he could easily have stepped out of CBGBs if it hadn’t been cleared to make way for gentrification, or indeed the old 12 Bar in our very own dirty old London town.
There were no such bourgeois pretensions here—why use four chords when you can use three? Why not have a rockabilly bassist playing more complex lines than the lead guitarist? As they frantically moved, shook, lunged, and high-kicked across the stage, this welcome blast of garage punk rock woke up the half-empty, half-asleep Highbury Garage, just down the road from Kier Starmer’s corporate box, on a work-weary Friday night.
The sawdust of the support band gave way to the stardust of the headliners: the suited and most resplendent Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. Surely, it’s only a matter of time before they get the call from David Lynch himself—beckoned to play the house band in a rundown casino, frequented by a collection of weathered, deformed, yet sharply dressed psychopaths. Perhaps plotting their next move, shuffling a deck of cards in the flickering neon glow of The Shelter Cocktail Lounge, as Bob Log’s blues guitar echoes from the shadows in the corner…
..this soft-spoken yet spookily charismatic queer Mexican American is the very epitome of vintage cool."
Housekeeping for the uninitiated: Kid Congo Powers is a veteran of the punk, garage rock, and psychobilly scenes, most notably as a member of The Cramps, The Gun Club, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. An authentic eccentric with the timeless glamour of a 1950s cocktail club, this soft-spoken yet spookily charismatic queer Mexican American is the very epitome of vintage cool. He’s perhaps the person with whom you’d most like to share a Ouija board session, and with the spirits he could raise, it would be a party to end all parties.
Bessenhoffer emphasized that the Pink Monkey Birds are always pushing it to the next dimension."
The set opened with ‘The Boy Had It All’ and ‘Silver For My Sister,’ two tracks from the new album That Delicious Vice. The two new band members displayed exceptional musicianship and stage presence: no less than the mighty Gabriel Naïm Amor on guitar, and the illustrious Dave Bessenhoffer, sporting a six-string bass and strutting around in a powder blue lounge suit and Cuban heels. Bessenhoffer emphasized that the Pink Monkey Birds are always pushing it to the next dimension.
...the most badass band we've seen all year."
With his chunky specs and sparkly southern necktie, Gabriel initially looked like the high school bully’s next victim, but he played his Gretsch with a ferocious energy that hinted at an underlying steely strength. In all honesty, this is probably the most badass band we’ve seen all year.
There were songs for the dearly departed, Goo Goo Muck and You Got Good Taste from The Cramps repertoire and She’s Like Heroin to Me, which he dedicated to the Gun Club’s Jeffrey Lee Pierce.
Kid Congo tried his very best to get the crowd to sing along in Spanish during ‘Ese Vicio Delicioso’ (an intoxicating new favorite of ours), which met with limited success. However, everyone jumped along uncontrollably to Ron’s faultless cowbell beat as if they had St. Vitus’ dance.
Wicked World, another song from the new album about a female serial killer penned by feminist activist punk vocalist, Alice Bag, cleaned up with its sliding guitar and catchy bass lines giving way to nails on chalk board screechy notes and an intense wall of sound.
The tracks included earlier moments in the Pink Monkey Birds’ career, such as At The Ruins of Others from Gorilla Rose; and Killer Diller and Haunted Head from the Haunted Head album. There were further tracks from the new album too – The Smoke is The Ghost, with Kid’s spoken word over a lounge tune building up to a hypnotic psychedelic crescendo (pure classic Congo), and A Beast, A Priest, with its syncopated rhythms.
As the thoughtful and well-structured set ended with the full-on assault of the Gun Club’s ‘Sex Beat,’ there was never any doubt that an encore was on the cards. The guitars were down-tuned before they launched headfirst into ‘Primitive,’ with its utterly filthy, sleazy riff.
La Araña was, according to Kid Congo, the tale of a spider who was queen of the underworld, living beneath the pyramids of Mexico City before rising to the surface of the Earth. She attended a party at his house, where she drank all the booze, fucked everyone, and made a huge mess—you know the type! Regardless of the story’s veracity, it was a catchy, 1960s-style number that had even the quiet kids bouncing by the end.

The night concluded with “Never Said” from That Delicious Vice, a slower piece featuring appropriately delectable, twangy chords and chiming notes that resonated across the strange and unusual Garage crowd. Although modest in number, the audience was entranced and appreciative, including one Bobby Gillespie, who wore an oversized hat to remain inconspicuous.

JC Miller – American Stories
American singer-songwriter JC Miller presents his new single ‘Blackberry Canes’, released via Tilt Records.
Once again, this true-grit storyteller engages us in a captivating journey that blends time and nature within the American landscape.
From the opening dobro lick leading into a catchy baritone guitar entrance and the soulful Telecaster twang that follows, you know you are in JC Miller country. Classic on arrival you will be singing along with this infectious tune. In true JC fashion, this song’s outro is a celebratory groove with all the twirling southern fried rock guitar mojo we have come to expect from JC Miller.
“The song ‘Blackberry Canes’ came about from thinking about the rambling, ramshackle path of growth sometimes. It’s not always a pretty pattern but it gets the job done, always reaching and somehow surviving… Blackberry trunks go sideways and every which way and travel a roundabout trail, never a straight line. It is a small passing thought really but it serves to remind us that you have to keep moving forward no matter what into the unknown just to grab the next beam of light,” says JC Miller.
“Like the lyric says, I feel ”Suspended in our time, Somewhere in between, Untold tomorrows and Countless yesterdays…” We are stuck between the past and the future, and that giant size idea can be expressed with the smallest details found in wild nature, or right in your front yard. I also think, like it says in the song, “It’s a punishment and crime how we’re slaves to the machine…” I am a throwback to the 20th Century analog era and old school all the way. I’m a throwback luddite type of guy”.
![](https://usercontent.one/wp/www.1st3-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/733327.jpg)
JC Miller’s music takes form through the music alchemy enjoyed with celebrated musician-producer Marty Rifkin, who is known for his work with Tom Petty, Glen Campbell and Jewel, in addition to playing pedal steel guitar in Bruce Springsteen‘s The Sessions Band.
With country balladry, this latest offering follows a hearty string of singles that include ‘Tombstone Junction’, ‘Dead Horse Ranch’, ‘Sundown Slim’,‘Wayward Son’ and ‘Before Nightfall’.
A Los Angeles-based artist hailing from Detroit, JC Miller has spent years creating music for major clients, which include the likes of Levi’s, Coca-Cola and Nike. Now he is also pursuing his own authentic path as a singer-songwriter and guitarist with a distinctive sound invoking elements of Americana, Country and Southern Rock. Inspired by his personal journeys, Miller crafts relatable songs that are rooted in the fabric of America, his work infused in deep affection for its Southern realms.
With clever hooks, natural charm, and a talent for songsmithing, Miller’s songs resonate with audiences at a deeper level. With passion and conviction, his lyrics are both relatable and thought-provoking, painting vivid pictures of life’s joys and challenges – stories of America, both past and present.
