London-based synthpop artist Rodney Cromwell has returned with his latest release, ‘The Winter Palace Remixes’, a four-track EP that showcases his unique and wondrous sound.
The EP features the radio edit of ‘The Winter Palace’, an original track, and several remixes from talented electronic acts, including Gemma Cullingford and Infra Violet.
‘The Winter Palace’, the title track, creates a cold and haunting atmosphere with its mix of synths, strings, electronic piano, and layered harmonies, all accompanied by Cromwell’s lush baritone. The track’s sound is a blend of classic new-wave influences, such as Joy Division and OMD, and more modern acts like Ladytron and Black Marble.
Gemma Cullingford’s remix takes the original in a darker, coldwave direction, combining experimental electronica with brittle new wave and noughties electro clash. Infra Violet’s remix transforms the song into a duet between Cromwell and lead singer Beth Munroe, crafting a sweeping cinematic soundscape with layers of reverb, Simmons drums, and soaring synths.
The EP also features an original track, ‘Rod, Jane and Freddy’, a composition that marries squelchy vintage synths with a rumbling krautrock beat.
Recorded at Acme Hall Studios in Brooklyn with producer Rich Bennett, ‘The Winter Palace’ was created in Cromwell’s home studio in South London. Cromwell has already earned considerable attention, having been featured in publications such as NME, Electronic Sound, and Huffington Post, while his music has received national radio play across several countries.
Fans have also been drawn to Cromwell’s energetic and entertaining live shows, which incorporate analogue synths, video visuals, and live instrumentation. He’s shared the stage with some big names in the industry, including A Flock of Seagulls, Pram, and Death & Vanilla.
Cromwell will embark on his debut headline tour in June 2023, with support from Roman Angelos, his label-mate on Happy Robots. The tour will hit London, Coventry, Reading, and Todmorden. In the meantime, fans can enjoy ‘The Winter Palace Remixes’ EP, which is available on all major digital platforms.
